DHS Hat....

the hat makes as much sense at that location as star tours would in fantasyland. none.

put it elsewhere. fine. but there? you've got this amazing recreation of "the hollywood that never was but always will be," and you break it up with a massive sorcerer's hat? i'm not the kind of person who's all doom & gloom when it comes to disney world. trust me. i'm closer to an apologist, if anything. but one thing disney excels in is theming- we can all agree on that. and this takes a top-notch theme and drops this thing right in the middle of it.

would a tron-themed restaurant make sense in the polynesian? or the castle in future world? no.

I LIKE the hat....but I HATE where it's located.

1. They had to destroy a giant, oval-shaped flower bed to put it there. Why is that important? Well, take a look at Disney-MGM overhead pre-hat.

It's Mickey's nose.

One ear was destroyed when they tore down the old amphitheater to build Sunset Boulevard....but they fixed it somewhat buy painting a new ear on the roof of the Playhouse Disney/Hollywood Brown Derby building. Mickey really should be restored.

2. The hat is at an awkward angle. When you're walking toward it down Hollywood Boulevard, you can still see a top corner of the Chinese Theater poking out from it.

Which is really REALLY shoddy.
Think about it...back when design and construction was underway for the Tower of Terror, the Imagineers KNEW you would be able to see it from Epcot. So...to fix that, they designed it to blend in with the Morocco Pavillion.

Such foresight was not planned with the Sorcerer's Hat....because it was supposed to be a temporary exhibit, Just for 100 Years of Magic.

And in the words of the Mickey Mouse Club...."Now it's time to say goodbye".

EDIT - Would be most fitting at the entrance to the new Art of Animation resort.

There was a rumor circulating that Disney *had* to keep the Chinese Theater from being a key focal point, due to some sort of dispute from the owners of the original theater in Hollywood. Then there were rumors that this was certainly not true, and only a myth.

I don't know what to believe. And of course Disney will tell you that the whole legal issue with the original theater is a "myth" (afterall, does the company ever admit when it screws up?) So why not claim it's an urban legend, and let people believe the hat has lingered on purpose?

Despite the reason as to why the Chinese Theater got upstaged, I do not like the hat where it is.

Not true.

to be fair, it was in the sorcerer's apprentice, which was a landmark film. it does make sense to be at dhs, just not where it is.
In which it was an object of Mickey's arrogant and envious pride. Even in Mickey's PhilharMagic, it is still an object of Donald Duck's envy. It is not a symbol of something good, but oh so fitting what has become of The Walt Disney Company and Walt Disney World.

I enjoy it. It's not classic, but I vaguely remember a time before it. Especially with newer generations, a big Mickey hat is more symbolic than the out-dated Chinese Theater.

I remember this too! I like the hat, but agree with others that it should be at the front of the park as the focal point.

The hat is a thematic intrusion. It destroys the original concept of design. It's not that it's a HAT, it could be anything, a 60ft Vinylmation doll, and it would still break up what was once a coherent and cohesive flow through the entrance. The hat, in and of itself isn't the issue, it's placement is. Put the hat elsewhere. A resort, outside, whatever. Take. It. Down.

Yea... its kind of ummm.... what's the word... there. Like I don't hate it and it doesn't make me angry, its kind of intrusive; but its also kinda neat and I do love walking in and around it. Its like that in-law who's visiting and not really mean to you... but you still want to show them the door.

Why all the hate for the Hat. Each park needs it signature, the Chinese Theater while, a beautiful building symbolizes a different version of HS, this is not MGM anymore, and the studios are changing. Could the location be better, well that is a different story.

read what we're saying. it's not the hat, it's the location.
and it no longer being mgm has nothing to do with the theater. it's a classic hollywood landmark, which is the epitome of the park's theme.

The Chinese Theatre is not a symbol of MGM or its studio, but of Hollywood. The building was obscured years before the name change.
