Not even updated concept art.

For a company who one minute is bringing back fan favorite concepts like the Door Coaster and a Villains Land to then hosting a fan event that is built on the back of parks announcements to not even have any updates is crazy to me and has me question how one minute they can be so in touch with what the fans want to the next be so oblivious to what fan expectations are.

Everyone looks at D23 as the event where you find out about all the new parks stuff coming. They would save themselves a bunch of fan headaches if they just didn’t call this bi-yearly event Destination D23 and instead gave it some other name as to not link it to something that is so deeply connected to parks announcements.

And I get people will say they tried to lower expectations by showing their was no parks panel but even the lowest expectations had predictions of some updated concept art.

The whole thing just blows my mind.

Having already owned up to being an entertainment lover-I also really enjoyed the concert. Didn’t even really understand what it was going into it, I was rolling with most of the weekend in chaotic way.

I like that this thing felt rag tag in the right ways compared to expo. Particularly the Goofy on the open road segment having a lot of the people we’ve met over two days join in.

The description for the Villains Panel does mention "new projects and attractions" .... I do think they have delivered on the minimum of the way things are worded but also can understand why people feel a bit disappointed

"9:05 - 9:50 AM | Disney Villains: Icons of Evil
Join Disney Experiences (and some of your favorite troublemakers) for a panel discussion on how Disney Villains experiences come to life around the world. Hear directly from the creative minds behind new projects and attractions, plus enjoy a special Villains-themed medley to kick off Destination D23 day 2."

Mentioning "new projects and attractions" apart from its context is misleading.

The lead up to that phrase is "Hear directly from the creative minds behind..."

It's about hearing about the planning process from those planning it. And that's what the conference delivered on. There were no promises of showing new stuff about the projects and attractions containing Villains.

I agree - they delivered to the letter of the law of what they said ... But I also can understand when this thing is hyped up to be the biggest ever, act that people were anticipating more and feel a little let down.

Obviously can't like complain or want your money back or anything

You are describing the expo/ultimate Fan Event not Destination

They have had some news in a couple of recent Destinations but it is traditionally not for that

I’m sorry everyone. It was a bad year because I attended. Any time I try to do a Disney event (usually pin event) it’s the “worst year in several.”

But the last one of these was during the Peltz shareholder battle, and that tends to make it really important for current management to over perform, from past experience. Next year they may bounce back. But I won’t be there to experience it.

Come on my guy, you can't just take those four words out. They are promising hearing from those people behind upcoming stuff, not announcements of anything new.

I’m still kinda perplexed at the announcements immediately preceding this event. I’ll be curious to see if the opposite is true, if a random piece of concept art or restaurant announcement or some such thing follows it within the next month.

It's happened. Many a time.

Heck, The Spirit of Animation was announced for DHS just 9 days before D23.

My main issue is that, there are a few ways to perform: announcements, special guests (more an Expo thing) and gifts. Last time, I didn’t even go but ended up with the Figment gift because a friend didn’t have luggage space and my Dad retrieved it. And people seemed to really like the Lug backpacks. The one before that, had the free Amazon Echo.

Lug still delivered with their bag, luggage tag and Figment pin. Disney Visa Stitch pin was nice and then? Even my litho from the Cosmic Rewind preview was matted. But when you double the amount of attendees, I guess you can’t do nice gifts.

Then with no announcements of substance, even with smaller things outside of the holiday food & beverage items, you were left with how much you enjoy Jodi Benson and the rest of the Broadway entertainment. And a lot of attempts to be funny by the non-entertainers like the Archive staff. It was nice to see Jamie from Off Kilter still jamming those pipes as the old man, the performance felt out of place in all the Latin theming.

I wanted to know more and hear better about the El Groupo to 3 Caballeros stuff. But 3 short segments when people are trying to enter or leave when they were talking very fast wasn’t satisfying.

What I learned is that despite online disappointment, there were still tons of cheers so there is a group of newer fans who were satisfied by the the fluffy filler. Disney doesn’t need or want someone like me who prefers the “informational presentations” from the early years / old NFFC or Disneyana conventions.

And a Studios presentation.

I very much could understand if the films and renaissance era films are not your thing that was 70% of the value of this years convention. Even the broadway stuff was like “we’re only singing from the renaissance catalogue”

I’ve seen Studio presentations starting with Roy E hyping up Toy Story 2 and Fantasia 2000 at the 1998 Shareholders meeting. This was not that.

Storytelling and character development is not great right now and it shows.

But you didn't see that at any prior Destination D. Enjoyment was your qualifier, but not a condition of inclusion. It depended on your enjoyment of broadway, current studios and Jodi (may no one speak ill of her).

This conference was hyper-fixated on millennials. The glut of content went from mermaid to Phineas/Ferb and millennial Disney channel. Even the party was Emperors New Groove. The "80's and 90's" party was 88-98. So a 90's party.

They really picked a singular audience to clear exclusion of others. Probably why reactions are erratic.
