Deluxe resorts are too expensive

There is magic and they are some of the greatest hotels in the world, but it's not unusual for those to go for $700. Most people don't want to spend that much.

I don't think the $700 / night rates are normal -- those are overflow rooms. Disney needs to keep Deluxe resort rooms available when they shuffle guests around, mainly to accommodate keeping group bookings in one resort or in the same category of room. This is why sometimes you will get a room or entire resort upgrade. Happened 3 times to me, although it appears to be fairly rare. My thoughts are they keep a percentage of these rooms serviced and ready to go, but up for sale too. The last thing Disney wants is an overbooked or understaffed resort. And it does no good to tell an overbooked Deluxe guest that there are plenty of Value resort alternatives available! lol!

For what you pay the rooms really aren't 'all that'. We have stayed in far nicer resorts in other areas of the U.S.A. However, what I think you are really paying for is location. But, with that price you shouldn't be sharing buses.

Room Prices

Great subject, I hope you get many more replies. Yes, in my view Disney's Deluxe level resorts are all too expensive. You certainly get a lot in terms of ammenities (dining options, transporation convenience, activities, pools, expansive lobbies, recreation, etc.). My hang up has always been with the size of the rooms. Sure you can opt for an even more expensive villa or jr suite in some resorts, (maybe even a campground cabin or similar setup) but the basic standard rooms are a far cry from the similarly priced upscale hotels off property. I could be wrong, but it seems that they don't build larger rooms because they simply need to have room for as many people as possible. Bathrooms are pretty basic too. There is plenty of magic to be had just about everywhere else on the property so we have just dealt with it, but my answer to your question is a resounding yes.

It's a tough call. Disney deluxe rooms are amazingly small (though those at the Poly aren't too bad). I've stayed at much cheaper hotels with rooms that were larger, a suite even, and more luxurious. That said, most of those "better room value" places were generic. At Disney's you are mainly paying to be transported to another time or place, for an exceptional experience, not for the basic room quality & size. That makes it difficult to compare value.

yes deluxe hotels are wayyy too expensive. For the money that you are paying mickey himself should come into your room at night and read you a bedtime story.

I understand that you are paying for the experience but seriously, the rooms are tiny, no free internet, no breakfast. Really the only perk is monorails/ambiance/proximity to the parks.

I just looked for 1 night at the end of march, and the grand floridian is $810!

Seriously? $810??!

I mean I can see if you got front of the line access on rides or something, but there are basically no other perks other than being on the monorail line and staying in a fancy resort. When I'm worth a couple million more I will definitly take week long vacations at these resorts, but for now its just too pricey for my blood.

AKL-224 a night for a savannah view room wasn't too bad for a special occasion but if you are paying full price then yes its too much for poor people like me.

It's fair market value. If there are enough people willing to pay those prices why wouldn't Disney charge that much. It's the same reason you see huge discounts during the slow times. They can't fill the resort at the higher prices during the slow times so they cut the price.

Free market supply and demand. It works every time it's tried.

Overall though Disney has to charge more for a room to cover the extras you get. Such as free transportation to the parks, theming, and the extra staff Disney keeps on hand.

We normally stay at a mod. Always CSR (79 more days), which is almost like a deluxe anyway. We have occasionally stayed at a DVC only because I get a good deal through a member. I just can't justify to myself paying for a deluxe though. We discuss maybe staying at a deluxe every time we trip plan. I'd rather save the money for other things. But it does seem a lot of people stay at one.

As someone who is ono the brink of canceling due to lack of discounts, put me in the "YES" category. I love the monorail resorts for their ambience, location and convenience. But I am NOT paying over $450 for a hotel room. Disney should be embarassed to charge that much given the lack of hotel amenities they provide.

I have stayed at deluxe, moderate and value hotels in Disney. I have to say that i will never waste the money staying anywhere but values again . They have a more Disney Magic feel. Plus if you are spending enough time in the rooms for it to make a differance you are are wasting your Disney vacation.

Rack rates are just stupid.

Without a discount I think the rooms are waaaay too much. Certainly other hotels/resorts (not Disney) are a whole other level of deluxe that makes Disney's "deluxe" look more mediocre for similar pricing or less. With Disney it's the location you're paying the premium for. There's no other reason to pay what they ask.
