Deluxe Hotel, what are you really getting?

You are getting location. You are getting the best hotel rooms on Disney property, even if they are not in the same class as top-end hotels in the Orlando area. You are getting the best restaurants of any Disney hotels. And you are being immersed in the Disney experience at a level above Moderates and Values. That said, if you are a theme-park commando who only uses the room to sleep and shower, you are much better off at Mod or Val
I agree with you. The only things better at WL than POR was a little better transportation and a majestic lobby. The sit down restaurants may be better at a deluxe, but the QS offerings at the moderates and values are much broader. I.E. Roaring Fork had excellent food but very limited choices.

Paying for views at WDW has always been stupid...unless you are a first timer, one and done, or special circumstance.

Nobody can honestly prove the “value”
of it. But that’s how they play the game and people go along. Money for nothing for Disney and low ROI for the customer. It is what it is.

I’m not saying there’s anything “wrong” with it on a personal level...it just ultimately makes no sense.

I know when I have paid for a water view at CSR it gets me closer to the walking paths, and nearer the main buildings. For me, that is why the upgrade is worth it, not because I want to stare at the pond all day.

The problem with this view is that we requested a HIGH floor with maybe a view of the MK. This was the LOWEST floor available all the way in the front corner of the lobby. Almost like they intentionally gave us the exact opposite of what we asked for. I know requests aren't guaranteed, but probably 90% of the rooms on the west side would have had at least a little view of MK fireworks. We had NOTHING. We won't be going back to WL.

In fairness, WL does offer a Courtyard View where that wouldn’t have happened.
All of the deluxe resorts do.. so if someone is complaining about a parking lot view etc.. they chose the option while knowing the risk.

Watching the fireworks and EWP from our balcony, in pajamas, or waking up to room service while having the castle etc as our backdrop, seeing the launch, ferry’s, and MK start their day..this makes paying for the views “worth it” to me.

The four seasons is true luxury hotel and the rooms are significantly nicer than Poly, Contemporary, Yacht, or Waldorf-Astoria - the comparables ive stayed at. Transport is not as good, but at that price point either you drove, rented a car, or don’t mind multiple Uber’s per day. It also has a great pool area, water slide and lazy river, as well as an excellent kids club. We loved lilo’s Playhouse and the move to the childcare at poly may shift us there in the future. My wife has stayed at a lot of 5* hotels and the four seasons at Disney is one of her favorites. However, it costs a lot. She had a work meeting there, so her job covered it the one time we stayed. When I’m olanning a trip she might not want to go on, she’ll throw that out there, and I’ll have to check the rates relative to wherever I was planning.

It kills me to pay the "deluxe" rates when the rooms themselves, are SO NOT worth it. However, we LOVE the atmosphere of the BW- the bars, restaurants, and performers. Not to mention we don't have to cram on a bus with a bunch of tired, crabby kids and smelly peeps- we can just walk back to the room. And waking up to crescent lake sitting on the balcony with a cup of coffee, smelling the bakery sweets is well worth the "view" upgrade. So like everyone else said- it's all about location, which is unfortunate. They COULD make the rooms nicer for the price :/

You get a balcony and better atmosphere. Honestly, I have been around the real world not Disney and if you do disney right, it is the most relaxing vacation you can do. Don't fall into the pitfalls of the vacation books and find what you like. Pay for the water view or the garden view, enjoy the resort and don't feel the pressure of having to knock out your park list and you will Have the best trip ever. For me, with the exception of Vegas where you can't get a balcony, a vacation is not a vacation without a balcony and a good view.

Tell me about it. I was working my family hard at trying to convince about "downgrading" our vacation from the Poly to a moderate. They wouldn't have it.

However, we LOVE the atmosphere
You know what, even though I failed to convince them, this past vacation at the Poly was probably one of the best Disney vacations we had. So you're right its not just about the room, though the themeing of the Polynesian is probably one of the best on property. My kids had an absolute wonderful time and while I'm flat broke they really want to go back. This time I've been telling them, no dice on the deluxes we're doing moderates or the Pop/AoA

I have never stayed at a Deluxe-I've had 2 stays at Values (Pop & AoA) and 1 stay at a Moderate (POR). The only deluxe I have ever stepped foot in was the Poly (took a bus from Disney Springs to the Poly to catch the monorail to MK for MNSSHP on Halloween last year). Myself, DW and DD are not the type of family who take the mid-day break back at the resort, nor do we have a day where we stay at the resort all day. Would an extended stay at a Deluxe be worth it for us? We would probably not be trying out the pools and we never eat dinner at our resort, so the better pools and restaurants would not be a usable perk for us. I think the Poly is beautiful, but I'm not sure I can justify the added cost, given the reasons I just listed.

Really, only you can answer that question, but I'm willing to be that if you booked a deluxe resort that you'd start vacationing at Disney differently. Not a bad thing, unless your budget won't permit it at this time.

The very first time we stayed at BWI, my husband said "once we make this leap, there's no going back". He's right. I can't imagine a WDW vacation now NOT staying there (we love EPOCT). Although we loved being a POFQ too.

You don't always get a good view. Here is what we had for a view at Wilderness Lodge.View attachment 287972
Any floor lower than 5th on the north side (facing MK) has the exact view you had (even with the tree removal for the cabins) since the new trees that have been replanted are already growing and filling in.
You are right, whether justifiably so or not I do feel wronged. I wanted this trip to be special because it will probably the last trip for all four generations of our family, and the request was noted on the reservation over a year in advance by the cast member who helped with the two room reservation.
Sadly, the length of time you’ve had a room request on your reservation does not increase your odds of getting it (though I agree it should.) We’ve had that happen to us (most recently in May) and whenever we have brought it to the attention of the CMs all we get is an apology, the refrain of “requests are not guaranteed” and an offer to check availability....which might reveal a room in that area will open in a couple days, but we’d incur the hassle of moving.
Having to fulfill a two-room location request is even more challenging for room assigners, especially if there is a need for connecting rooms with interior doors, as not all rooms connect.
Yes, I did pay extra for what was supposed to be an upgrade over the "standard view" rooms at WL. I guess what was most irritating was that extra cost over POR where we usually stay was about $1,200 for this trip and it was a total waste of money in my opinion.
The room categories from low to high when you booked over a year ago were standard, woods, courtyard, club level. Standard rooms face the parking lot or rooftops. You booked woods view and were given what you paid for.
We didn't stay there because of the park view, but we requested a room that had view of the MK fireworks because 80% of the rooms in the class of room we had booked had that view and the grandkids would have really enjoyed that.
Your 80% statistic is too high. Lower floors on the end of the building nearest the boat dock/Bay Lake cannot see fireworks because of the trees on the island. The entire 7th floor is club level and a few of those rooms have no view of MK at all and only offer a partial fireworks view.
I even heard from a CM at the front desk that they are going to start calling these "fireworks view" rooms and of course they will then charge extra for them. Doesn't really matter at this point because we will most likely never go back to WL. FYI we had problems with housekeeping not delivering enough towels or soaps too.
Current room categories are now standard, nature, courtyard, nature fireworks, club level. You are correct that rooms with a view of the fireworks now cost extra.
I hope you contacted housekeeping about your lack of towels and soap. Our requests for additional items have always been promptly met.

You weren’t “stupid” for choosing a Deluxe over a Moderate. Like a lot of us, you set your hopes/expectations too high and therefore felt you “wasted” money when you did not receive what you wanted. I get that....I’ve been there myself. But the reality is you got to experience things at WL that you wouldn’t have at POR (boat to MK and higher quality sheets, towels and TP for example.) Besides, your grandkids are going to remember the great fun they had with their grandparents, not the fact they did not get to see fireworks from their room. 😊

Last time I stayed at WL, I watched the fireworks from my balcony wearing my cargo shorts.

Oh...yes.. this! I knew from the first time we stayed at the Beach Club, there was no going back. Being able to walk into my favorite park (EPCOT) is priceless. We love Storm Along Bay, as well. I also found much better customer service at the Beach and Yacht Club than we had when we stayed at Coronado Springs, which we did several times. We also traveled with my mom who is in a scooter, so the ability to just ride over to EPCOT was a huge plus for her. The buses can get crowded and if you hit it where there are more than two scooters, you're out of luck until the next bus.

All of that said, given the big price increases and some changes in our overall vacation spending, I can't imagine staying a deluxe again. I will look in to renting DVC points, however.

Though I agree with most everything else...this in particular is an illusion.

Same staff from a centralized pool. Absolutely nothing is in place to provide safeguards making the grand Floridian staff better than POP...people just assume that because the scenery is nicer.
