Trip Report DCL: Collect the whole set! A Pro9het Turf’less Surf story.

So the Cliff’s Notes version of trip details can be had here:

As is usual we are celebrating our anniversary at sea with DCL. What is not usual is we are doing it from a port that is not Port Canaveral. Our departure port would be New York City. This meant a first time trip to NYC for the both of us. This also meant there would be no WDW turf side to this story as is typical for us. Another first for us was our journey taking place on the Disney Magic. We’ve been on every other DCL ship to this point and we were excited to complete the set with our first Magic voyage. If that wasn’t enough “new” for us we added a new port of call, 2 days at Bermuda. So there ya have it, a series of firsts now lets get this party started.

Tuesday, day before we fly to NYC:
Word on the weather street was that a nor'easter was heading straight for NYC. Worse yet is was supposed to hit NYC while we were flying in that evening. We scrambled tonight to see if we could fly out earlier. Thankfully we found a flight leaving several hours earlier and better yet the seats were together. This would ease some of my bride’s fears of flying but only temporarily. It’s strange how life’s highs and lows can come at you. While we were scrambling to avoid a nor'easter we received a notification of a DVC resale contact that just hit the market. We’d been looking for a small VGC contract for a while and sure enough one popped up. We tossed our hat in the ring with an offer and the caveat that we were about to set sail and couldn’t sign anything until we returned. Fingers crossed!

Wednesday, travel day:
I was scheduled to work today but since we shifted our flight I took an additional vaca day. We left the house a little before 9am and since it was raining out this meant Georgia drivers just took a dump on Ga400. Seriously, this state may have the worst drivers. What should have been an easy, “post rush hour”, trip to the Marta station turned into a gridlock nightmare. It was so bad the usual Marta station we use was at capacity and we had to drive to the next station to catch a train. Thankfully that only incurred another 10 minutes on the road. We navigated the station, and soon were arriving at the airport. Hooray for TSA PreCheck! We passed through security in no time and settled into the terminal, only slightly frazzled.

Speaking of highs and lows, while we sat at the gate we received a notice from the DVC resale agent:

Our offer was accepted! This high was temporary, though, as it was time to board and my Bride’s nerves would be tested. As we boarded we did find things to distract us. For me it was:

For my bride it was:

No
TLI participated in the beer exchange and we had actually already been chatting each other up on the FB group and Untappd. TLI also does a lot of home brewing so we hit it off right away. While we all got acquainted our menus arrived.
Wondering what beer TLI brought to the beer exchange. Do you remember???

Friday, day at sea:

After a late night we slept like a couple of rocks! DCL beds are are amazingly comfortable, especially compared to NCL. So the night before we left the room service card on the door for coffee, juice, and fruit delivery at 07:00. I set my alarm for 06:30 to be ready so naturally I was up by 05:45! No mater how hard I try on vacation I can't shake my internal clock. I quietly tossed on some clothes while my bride slept and went top side for some pictures before breakfast was to come.

The skies looked like there could be some potential gloominess today, we will see how this pans out.

Now, what you are looking at here is actually Palo. Unlike The Dream and Fantasy, Palo on The Magic and Wonder overlooks a deck that is accessible by guests. This creates the potential for some awkward sites during a dinner, would we encounter some amazing sites later? Stay tuned to find out.

Friday, day at sea, con't:

So if you've followed along in the past you know our M.O. is to order our beverages, maybe some toast, and some fruit via room service for breakfast while I hit up Cabanas fro some hot food. This allows us to enjoy a nice breakfast on our veranda while avoiding the regulars up in Cabanas. I'll go topside and wait for the text from my bride telling me when room service arrives and ten hit up Cabanas which opens at 07:00. I received the text promptly at 07:00 and was about the second person in cabanas.

So I had a short walk back to our room and combined what I got with what room service brought.

Made our way out to the veranda to find things very wet. It wasn't raining but it was a bit cool and damp so we decided to have breakfast in bed today. Thankfully the clouds looked like they would be breaking soon!

So we relaxed on our veranda for a few minutes after breakfast. We did this to kill some time until the vacation planning desk opened. We wanted to book a new placeholder and wanted to get it done right away before things got busy. It also looked like the weather was clearing so we tossed on our bathing suites to hit up the adult pool after getting our PH. Along the way we passed the art hallway. No dedicated art gallery on The Magic so instead they line one hallway with the artwork they would normally put in the gallery.

As we exited the art hallway we were faced with the atrium and perhaps my least favorite chandelier of all the DCL ships. I don't know, its ok but the others seem grander to me.

Another difference on this cruise compared to previous ones is that since day one the tree in the atrium was in full bloom. On the Halloween itineraries on The Dream the tree starts out empty then slowly blooms pumpkins during the trip. Small detail, maybe, but something I think is pretty neat.

We arrived at the panning desk with a few minutes to spare.
IMG_7614.JPG

While those few minutes passed we got to see Stitch and a few princesses.

About five minutes later and we had a new placeholder ready to use on a future trip! Time to head to the pool.

With our PH secured we made for Quite Cove, the adult pool. While it was still overcast out we were not the first ones scouting chairs for the day. Thankfully the clouds were moving out fast.

We relaxed and read for a bit and the clouds continued to leave. I decided to head to the room real quickly to grab one of my exchange beers. When I got the room the veranda view was pretty awesome.
IMG_7622.JPG

When I came back I grabbed my bride a mixed drink from the bar. Seriously, this has to be one of the best tap lineups of any DCL ship.

This blue concoction was the drink of the day and I have no recollection of what it was. I, on the other hand, had a Palo Santo Marron by Dogfish Head. Its a solid 12%er that I had had once before but this one had been aged a few years.
IMG_7628.JPG

As I said, the clouds were moving out and we had some great seats by the pool.

Loving the report
Tricia and I did a cruise when we were very young and since then have not done one again
She refuses to try again based on the experience ( feeding the fishes)

So everytime you do a DCL report I get to experience it as close as I ever will

Thanks

Max

Honestly, the patch the behind the ear is a lifesaver. Coming back into New York tested the heck out of it and it passed with flying colors.
