dandaman's Very Long TR: 8/19-8/30

I’ll try to type as much as I remember, but I might have to edit a lot and add stuff in, once I remember it.

8/19- We left our house (in Belle River, Ontario) at exactly midnight. Dad looked at his watch and claimed it was 12:01, and blamed my mom for making us “late”.

We took I-75 the whole way down, without stopping anywhere. (Hotel-wise. I still need to take a “break”, don’t I? :lookaroun)

We arrived at our hotel, Buena Vista Suites, at around 8:30 p.m. (“Wow, that’s a fancy hotel, all lit up n’ everything…” ) Dad got off work a day early, and drove all the way through, 20 hrs. straight, so we ended up staying 2 nights at BVS. We got the MouseSavers rate of $89/night, and it would’ve been worth around at least $200/night, because that 2-room suite was luxury… Well, luxurious to me. I usually get the floor of the hotel, wherever we go. I got my own TV and microwave, coffeemaker, bed… Ah, that was the life.

I remember eating at some new “pizza buffet” place that just opened, next to Hawaiian Adventure Golf or something like that, on SR 535. Very good value; around 7 or 8 dollars for all-you-can-eat pizza, salad and desserts! :sohappy: It was surprisingly loud, but the food was definitely the star of the restaurant (as it should be).

1 day down, 11 more to go. :brick:

8/20- Went shopping at Festival Bay Mall first thing in the morning. Has anyone ever heard of this FX thing they have in the middle of the mall? You stand on a little platform that can vibrate, according to what’s on the screen in front of you (there’s track tubing to hold up all the elements surrounding the platform), and there’s TONS of effects. Chocolate smells, bubbles, really strong wind, multicoloured spotlights, heat… wow. You can pay for an advertisement, complete with effects that you can buy, to play during your commercial. So far, some truck company and Fun Spot have actually advertised… the rest is filler, but very entertaining filler at that. I stood on that platform, eating a pretzel dog, for about 20 minutes while my mom and sister went shopping.

Bass Pro Shop was having a hunting and fishing expo, and that place was PACKED. I counted at least 150 people at the gun counter (scary thought, considering this is downtown Orlando…)

Finally, I bought a little surf-dude kind of necklace at Ron Jon. That, and my Yankees hat, makes me look like a totally different person (more on the hat later).

Next, we headed over to Belz Factory Outlet World. It’s more or less a tradition to go there during our Disney trips. That Character Premiere place is the only real reason we go there… for all of the bargains on perfectly good WDW merchandise, at less than half the cost on most of the things they have there! Festival Bay is definitely better, IMO. In July 2003, we went there when it was a brand-new mall. Now, it’s expanded at a really surprising rate.

I’m pretty sure we ate at Golden Corral that night (see: best buffet on earth). That’s the one restaurant I wanted to do outside the World. Because we had the free Dining Plan, I wasn’t sure if we were going to have a chance to eat there… but, seeing as how our admission/hotel stay/plan didn’t start until the following day, I got my cake, pizza, steak, ice cream, and brownies… and ate it, too! (Well, really, I could only eat about half. Eyes are bigger than the stomach. )

Keep in mind, I’m not even in Disney World yet. Oy vey.

I’ll try to write some more tomorrow. This alone took me about 2 hours, so I might as well post my unnecessarily detailed first 2 days of the trip.

Stay tuned!

Edit: The filter actually banned the work "t r u c k i n g"!

We discovered GC on our last trip - very basic decor but the food quality and selection is amazing and very good value.
Good start to the report - keep it coming

8/21- First things first. We checked into the Polynesian around 9:30, while getting an overview of the DDP. We were then led by a little go-kart with all our luggage (a really fast one, I may add) to our longhouse. We stayed in the Tahiti building (farthest one from the basic resort), in a second-floor room, with a fantastic view of a palm tree trunk. We weren’t exactly thrilled, but that changed the next day.

Before I tell of the actual parks, let me say this. Besides Soarin’, I never saw any line go past 40 minutes the entire time I was there. Now, that’s the off-season for ya!

Park #1: Disney-MGM Studios

Got to the park at approximately 11:30 or noon. Rushed straight down Sunset Blvd. for 2 Fastpasses for ToT and 2 for Rock ’n Roller Coaster. The line was 5 minutes (meaning I walked right into the preshow anyways), so I used standby for my first WDW ride. After that, I looked at the wait for ToT: 5 min., and again, I walked right into the preshow. What’s the point of Fastpasses if the lines are virtually non-existent?! Oh, well… I won’t complain. The lines still were under 10 minutes, but I figured I might as well use up the FP’s.
Waiting in line for the second ride on ToT, 3 “bellhops” were in front of me, and pointed out a Hidden Mickey on the wall I never even knew existed (and that doesn’t happen often!). The most memorable moment: The main bellhop (the other two were new CM’s) was showing them different things in the boiler room. He reached over to a switch on the wall and said, “At least once a day, pull this for kicks.” He pulled it, and… CRACK! Every single person in the room (including the bellhops) jumped about 5 feet.
I was supposed to meet the rest of my family (3 people) at Millionaire, but I missed it by about 1 minute (I sprinted there, too, ****it! ) Turns out they went on Star Tours and One Man’s Dream, anyways.

Since we arrived at the park kind of late, we headed over to Toy Story Pizza Planet for the first free meal of the trip (after about an hour of searching for my family…). I still can’t get over how much food they give you for each meal… most times we ate, we only used 2-3 credits, and shared our food. I always get my own meal, though… nobody gets my food.

After a late lunch, me and my dad headed over to the one thing I really wanted to see at the Studios: Lights! Motors! Action! That is one amazing stunt show. We actually missed the first 2 minutes or so of the first scene, because we entered really late. We got a seat somewhat high up, and were still going up the stairs when the show had started. I can’t even begin to describe how awesome that show was. It has pyro, Herbie, and car chases; what more could you ask for?… Well, I guess it’s a guy thing. :lookaroun

Headed back to the Poly for a midday rest (which meant an hour of watching TV), and headed back to the Studios for Fantasmic!
We’d never been to Evening Extra Magic Hour before, so I really didn’t know what to expect. We re-entered the park around 7:00, got EMH wristbands, and headed straight for Fantasmic!
We didn’t seem to wait that long for the show… we got the best seat we’ve ever had! 5th row in Mickey section… it was amazing. Oh, yeah… You know how the fireworks are supposed to fountain out from both sides of the mountain near the end? Well… that didn’t happen. All you had was nice finale music and Mickey aimlessly waving his arms at the crowd.

I couldn’t believe how valuable EMH was to our touring. I got my first ever night ride on the Tower (awesome!), and headed over to Star Tours, MuppetVision… most importantly, though, it was a whole lot less crowded. Oh, yeah… nobody told me there would be a DJ in front of the hat! They were having limbo contests and dance-offs all night! That was a nice surprise, to say the least.

Stay tuned for Day 2 at Epcot!

No fireworks at the end  that would spoil the show for me.

Seems like your writing your report just for me - as I'm the only one replying - still keep going, I enjoy reading them (its the nearest I'm going to get for 11 months)

And i'm curious... what was the Hidden Mickey you didn't know about on ToT? I'm always on the lookout for new ones!

Before I post this next update, let me say a few things.

DisneyBunny: The HM was pointed out to me by a Cast Member. It's a dark spot on the wall of the boiler room, a water stain. Just beyond where the queue splits, look on the left wall for a really faded (and somewhat distorted) Hidden Mickey. The HM is actually in the guide, but I forgot about it.

Cinderella Fan: Will you be there for Thanksgiving?

PigletIsMyCat: This next update, Epcot, doesn't have EMH for that day. However, the next three do, but I don't take advantage of Animal Kingdom's (no need to).

Now, ONWARD!

If you’ve gotten this far, chances are you’re either “CAPTAIN HOOK”, or you skipped the rest of the TR. :D

8/22- About a half-hour after we woke up for the day, there was huge noises and sounds of hammers and chainsaws coming from the room above and to our right. Frankly, this wasn’t really passing off as a stay at a deluxe resort. So, my dad requested a move at the front desk. During the time when he was on the phone, the guys with the hammers stopped, which didn’t help our want to move out of that room. So, Dad covered the phone and told us to make banging noises, turn on a lot of whirring appliances… I doubt that’s what allowed us to move, but it was still pretty damn funny.

We eventually (and with another go-kart moving our luggage!) got to our new, and final, hotel room, 1601 in Samoa. That room was definitely better, simply because it made me feel like I was a part of the resort, not some pretty hotel room in Nowhere, U.S.A. Got a great view of the pool, and it was kinda fun to watch storms roll through, and everyone evacuating the area… not to mention a huge umbrella blowing across the pool and nearly hitting a family of 5, but that wasn’t so much fun as “holy crap”.

Park #2: Epcot

Due to the hotel room mishap, we arrived at the park around 10:30. The one thing I absolutely wanted to do there was, of course, Soarin’. I ran ahead (and I mean ran. Probably saves me at least an hour extra on Fastpass wait times…) to get FP’s. I believe the time was 1:45-2:45, and the wait was already up to 80 minutes. Soarin’ was the only constantly long line throughout the entire trip.

I think we headed for the World Showcase pavilions next. My sister (“phantom groupie” is her username here) loves El Rio del Tiempo in Mexico; it’s like her Epcot version of Small World. Best thing to her is, theirs is never anybody in front of us in line, and often we’ve gotten an entire boat to ourselves.

I split up from the rest of my family for lunch; they went to Cantina de San Angel, I headed to Liberty Inn for some “really ethnic” food… ;) I love that Jello they have for dessert!

I met back up with them in Mexico (geez, I’ve already gotten a lot of exercise…), and we toured World Showcase as usual. I couldn’t believe how empty it still was… it’d already been open for an hour! Another sign that it was the off-season…

After we got out of the Mitsukoshi Store in Japan, we realized that our Soarin’ FP’s were about to end! We half-sprinted over to the Land (only took us about 10 minutes… the rest of the family’s a little faster than I thought!). Using the FP’s we got on in about 5 minutes.
You know how the first ride is usually the most memorable? Yeah. That was my case. We took flight from Concourse 1, B-2 (the exact middle of the seat configuration). The only word that can describe it is “wow”. Or “Whoa”. Or “OMG THIS IS SO AWESOME !!!1!!1!”. :lookaroun The sensation of flight has never been so closely mimicked; now I know how the penguins on the commercial feel!

We were about to leave the park again, for an afternoon rest, when we realized our reservation times for ESPN Club were at 7:00. It was 3:00 by this time, so it seemed kinda pointless to go back.
I headed over to Mission: Space next, of course knowing that there would be a huge… *pause*… line?
Empty. Completely empty. I went through the Single Riders line as usual, but it didn’t matter; I walked right into the Ready Room! The pre-show took longer than the queue time! Was that because it’s the off-season, or is it that and the incident with the 4-yr.-old keeping people off the ride?

I think after Soarin’, we had Fastpasses for Test Track at 4:00. I don’t remember when we made it over there to get them… maybe while I was at Liberty Inn? Whatever. That’s what we rode next.
Yaaaaawn. After going on Top Thrill Dragster, TT just seems to stand still in comparison.

Finally! Time to rack up one of many food bills that we refuse to pay for! ESPN Club was definitely the surprise restaurant of the trip. I hadn’t looked into this venue much (save for the menu), and it was unbelievable! They were interviewing Rick Barry, retired basketball player, live on stage, and we had front-row seats! Now, if only I knew who the heck Rick Barry was, I might have been a little more excited… but, it was still pretty cool!
I can recall having a Home Run Hotdog and fries for the main meal… but the dessert was one I won’t forget. Two words: Superbowl Sundae. First off, I couldn’t believe that a $17 dessert was included in the DDP (it was worth more than the meal!). Second, I see everyone gasping and staring at someone walking up behind me (I had a booth seat, so I was wondering what the heck everyone was looking at!). The dessert came to the table, and I had a sudden urge to yell out, “Holy $**t”!
At least 10 pounds of tooth-melting ice cream, chocolate sauce, brownies, caramel and strawberries, all stacked inside an exact replica of the Superbowl Trophy (well, except for the top half of the football, of course)! On top of the table, the dessert was higher than my head! We all tried to eat it, but we could barely make a dent in it; I felt rich, being able to order the biggest sundae on Earth and leave over ¾ of it.

At this time, it was around 8:30, so we quickly walked back to the International Gateway to see Illuminations: RoE. The bridge just next to the I.G., crossing between France and United Kingdom, was a great spot. We only had to wait about 10 minutes for the show to start, as opposed to some waiting 90 minutes, staking out a spot for it. After the show, we headed to Yacht & Beach Club, used a bus to the Magic Kingdom, and took the monorail back to the Polynesian.

Fingers… twitching… can’t type… much longer! I’ll try to write some more tonight… next stop, Animal Kingdom!

I also noticed the complete deadness of Mission: Space...the whole ride was empty on a busy EMH night...while at the same time Test Track was racking up 60 + minutes in the wait department...this was in mid Aug

i would ask for more explosions, some big american cars, a monkey, a special appearance by sam(?) the eagle (from the muppets), a guy shot from a cannon, some buildings on fire, a giant american flag, and maybe a heroess... :D

All right, I'm inclined to agree. :D

P.S. Just noticed the "heroess" thing. I like that idea... but wouldn't it be a "heroine"?

Maybe it's not a good idea to say that during a time when America's having a drug crisis... :lookaroun

Mission Space is always a walk on, it really doesn't matter which season it is unfortunatly.

And now I'm going to have to go to ESPN Club for some ice cream! :slurp:

8/23- As per usual for a day at Animal Kingdom, not a whole lot happened. But, I’ll try to post as much as I remember…

Park #3: Animal Kingdom

We arrived at the park around 9:30 (which, based on the past two days, was a miracle in itself  ). First priority of the day: Run like the wind to Kilimanjaro Safaris for Fastpasses. Wow. We only had to wait about an hour before the FP window opened… it’s pretty fun to go during the off-season. ;)

Went and saw our favourite WDW stage show, Festival of the Lion King, next. That thing’ll never get old (like some shows near Dinoland… ) After the show, it was already time to use the Kilimanjaro FP’s. Ouch. I couldn’t believe how violent the bumps were this time around. It’s never smooth, per se, but it’s way smoother than what we experienced then… “Oh, we hit a tommie!” :lookaroun Kidding!

I’m pretty sure we ate at Pizzafari next. For how many rooms they have, it sure can pack a whole lot of people in. The lines weren’t really bad for any of the counter service meals… we rarely waited 5 minutes before they took our order. DDP Info: Every time you order something, you have to sign the receipt for it. It’s not that time-consuming, but somewhat annoying just the same. Just to get a Mickey Ice Cream Bar, it took about 3 minutes extra to process it (or whatever they do to make the signature relevant  ).

I finished about 10 minutes before everyone else, so I ran ahead to get two FP’s for Kali River Rapids. Hmmm… already ran out. Can’t blame ‘em, though… every single day in Orlando had been above 90 degrees for around 49 straight days (I think it’s still going!). So, I ended up meeting them at Dinosaur, and getting 4 FP’s. Again, there was a very short time between the printing and the window’s time frame start.

I honestly don’t think we’ve stayed in Animal Kingdom longer than 6 hours each day we’ve been there. We left the park around 2:30, bringing us to a grand total of 5 hours of staying in the Animal Kingdom.

Being the hyper teenager that I am, while the rest of my family had a midday nap, I took my DDP card/room key/admission to the parks and explored the Polynesian. I remember getting 2 ice cream bars at Captain Cook’s, and heading to the monorail for a quick lap around the Seven Seas Lagoon. Between Grand Floridian and Magic Kingdom, I got a whole entire car to myself! Now, that was some good fun (albeit short-lived). “*echo*!” By short-lived, I mean the entire car was packed to the limit by the time we pulled out of the MK station.

Once I got back to the room, everyone else was up already (this is around 5:00). Now, we had originally planned to go to Cap’n Jacks for a seafood dinner, but there wasn’t anything for me or my sister (who, she wanted me to add, took some very awesome pictures on our trip; now, if only I knew how on Earth to post pictures on the site…). So, instead of seafood, we chose steak.

Dad reserved a table at the Concourse Steakhouse in the Contemporary for 8:00. This ties with ESPN Club as the most unexpectedly good restaurant of the trip. Mmmmm… filet mignon, cooked medium, with rosemary mashed potatoes. I didn’t know it was possible to cook a steak so delicious! Oh, yeah, and the chocolate mousse was pretty good, too. (Wait a minute… I liked the actual meal over the dessert?! )

I had forgotten about the Seven Seas Electrical Pageant, so I pulled up a comfy chair next to the window with a perfect view of Bay Lake. Even though I couldn’t hear the music (it sounds like a “midi” file on a computer anyways…), it was still nice to watch it for an after-dinner show.

Tomorrow, we visit the Magic Kingdom! Stay tuned!
