Damage to WDW from hurricanes?

The guest areas are for the most part ok. They didn't get damaged too bad and whatver is damaged gets fixed quickly. Areas that have lots of trees are where you can see the problems. If you ride the monorail you can see the areas where the trees were destroyed and Disney hasn't been able to (or just isn't going to) clean up yet.

The area you ride through on the monorail coming from Epcot to the Magic Kingdom with the fallen trees has an absolutely disgusting smell coming from those trees decaying in the swampy water. The smell seems to come through the AC vents on the monorail. It was nasty this past Friday. Everyone on the monorail was complaining not that there is anything Disney can do about it...it is just nature.

I have asked this before, but have not seen the answer. [So, if you have answered and I missed it, I am sorry.]

I would like to know what WDW does to secure the hundreds of boats that they have for oncoming hurricanes, or during the storm.

Also, I was curious if there was any flooding around the property, especially around Bay Lake/Seven Seas Lagoon, and around the Contemporary. Did anyone stay at the Contemporary? If so, were the top floors off limits? And what did it sound like on the Grand Canyon Concourse (Floor 4)? Just curious.

Any other interesting stories from on-property?

Sorry if noone has given an answer to the boat question. My guess is that they tie the SS magic kingdom up with enough slack to allow for rough seas. The boats that go from resort to resort get the same treatment and probably are anchored as best can be. The little SeaRacers are probably tied together. I can't see there being boat sheds for all of these water craft, as it doesn't seem practical. Only a few dry docks out of sight to make repairs would suffice.
Since surge from the ocean or gulf wasn't a factor so far inland; only a higher tide than usual, coupled with very rough water in the lakes would be the greatest challenge for the boats to make it through the storms.
Again, this is only a guess, but since boating is the thing to do around here, and I own an 18'5 boat myself; one can only do the best you can in these situations.

The majority of the damage is primarily to the trees/foliage in the parks. There was probably some roof damage across property as well. WDW does prepare for these things more than other companies, so they're fairly well protected. Here are some photos of the preparation/damage from the last few hurricanes.

EXCELLENT PICTURES!!! In the Hurricane Jeanne set of pics, you had a few in there saying that monorail was stuck on the beam for 15-20 mins. Why was it stuck?

That's amazing the amount of preparation Disney has to go through to get ready for a storm. They literally TIE down everything! I guess if it moves, or has the potential of moving, it gets tied down. I'd love to see how much rope you guys have in storage! LOL

Great job with the pix, man! :sohappy: :sohappy:

Forget the date on the shirts (I see old dates on many new t-shirts nowadays), and forget also about the plastic bag... what on earth are those mannequins doing behind a glass that is not covered or protected? What´s the point of covering them with plastic? If the glass breaks and the water comes in, the bag won´t save them at all! They won´t even stay in that place! :hammer: They should have been cleared from there and the windows protected.

Thanks. I guess I still wonder what people do to keep boats from slamming into the docks and destroying them, or vice versa.

Also, still wonder whether there was flooding around the Contemporary or over the water bridge. I know that they have levies that control the waters in the lakes, but I wondered when they become overwhelmed, etc.; and since the Contemp is surrounded by water, I just wondered about flooding, etc. Also, what the hurricane might have been like in the upper floors or in the Grand Canyon Concourse, with that huge glass wall....

Heading for the great escape.
I was at Wilderness Lodge during Charlie and the boats were all tied together in the water. They did spend some time securing them but I dont think it was much more than a few extra hitches in each line.

As for damage there was quite a few trees come down around the lodge and the moose topiary lost an antler. There was also a bit of the roof come crashing down directly above me, it was at that point I retreated from the balcony.

I would post my pictures but unfortunately they survived the hurricane but not homelands security's x-ray machine.

The big gate leading backstage at Camp Minnie Mickey blew down, as well as the covered walkway leading from the Lion King green room to the theatre (I knew it!).

The Tree of Life lost many leaves, most of which landed along the garden paths. But leaves were found in other places too- like in the camp! :veryconfu

Not sure about other areas of the park though.
