D23 announcements?

so in reality we don't have history to look back on to really know what will be announced but the trend has been downward in terms of announcements...is that about right?
It's three events every other year that have replaced what Disney does at San Diego Comic Con, which was also not a venue for big theme park announcements. Last year even saw the Parks and Resorts keynote nixed. What history there is, is of smaller announcements, not the big ones people build up in their minds.

The first D23 announced New Fantasyland a couple of weeks after plans leaked online (nobody seems to know for sure whether this brought forward the announcement or not), the Soundsational parade and Star Tours 2 were also announced in a brilliant presentation with Darth Vader and Stormtroopers. It's from this event that D23 has a reputation for big announcements, but sadly that was a one-off.

The second D23 in 2011 announced nothing of substance that wasn't already known - the retheming of a theater in Disneyland was the only new announcement.

D23 in 2013 didn't even have a Parks and Resorts panel and didn't announce much of anything, but did have Star Wars props in the Imagineering section.

Every year, because of Rasulo's presentation that first year, people big it up, but there's rarely anything revealed that those of us on this board won't have heard of before, so don't expect much.

My predictions - more Avatar details, Rivers of Light and FrozenStrom concept art, a minor Marvel attraction for DCA and possibly, possibly Star Wars in Disneyland, but nothing for WDW.

WDW is still suffering from a MyMagic hangover and as all the rumours say we're looking at at least 2020 before anything Star Wars opens, I don't think any DHS construction will begin for another year or so, so it will be D23 2017 before any DHS redo or Star Wars plans for WDW get announced.

Also they've just had a major Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim, I've a feeling if anything was going to be announced Star Wars for the parks Disney wouldn't have been able to resist announcing it as that's a much higher profile event than D23 is.

D23 Expo, Anaheim Convention Center, August 14-16 2015, Anaheim Resort District, California

Here's my take, either announced by Chairman Bob Chapek in the Anaheim Arena keynote address for Parks & Resorts, or shown in the big splashy WDI Pavilion in Exhibit Hall C...

A Sure Thing:
  • Avatar Land revealed a bit more with graphics/models we haven't seen yet, saddled with meaningless quotes from a charmless James Cameron
  • Frozen Attraction in Norway Pavilion revealed with graphics/models we haven't seen yet
  • New Luigi's Attraction in Cars Land revealed with graphics/models we haven't seen yet
  • Announcing whatever they are doing with Disneyland's Innoventions building which has been mysteriously closed and walled off for a month now...
DSC_6760-L.jpg

A Definite Maybe....
  • Perky details from Steve Davison including graphics/models we haven't seen before about Rivers Of Light at DAK
  • Marvel Land at DCA announced with graphics/models that prove Al Lutz at MiceAge knew what he was talking about
The Wild Cards...
  • A full park-wide Remake and Relaunch of DHS like what DCA got circa 2009-12, including a new name
  • An impressive new Star Wars Land coming to Disneyland and/or DHS by the end of this decade

Announcing whatever they are doing with Disneyland's Innoventions building which has been mysteriously closed and walled off for a month now...........This is the new 60th anniversary exhibit

Perky details from Steve Davison including graphics/models we haven't seen before about Rivers Of Light at DAK..........I don't believe Davision is involved with Rivers of Light.

The Parks stuff at D23 has been a bit of a letdown as far as specifics go, but I expect a LOT of SW this time. Major clips of the film and some specifics- as far as which park (DHS) and when, but nothing as far as specific attractions. The highlights for me have been film announcements and previews. I expect that to continue with a goodly amount of previews and 'first looks' at new animated movies and live action- Pirates, Marvel, and at least one or two surprises. As far as Avatar goes- ride specifics and probably some cg ride-throughs like they did for the 7D coaster. Maybe they'll give us all cupcakes again! D23 gets a bad rap for a lot of reasons , but it's still a very, very cool event for Disnerds.

im thinking since there are more D23's before any star wars lands open up im betting we see very little besides maybe some concept art...this D23 will probably be heavy DAK, SDL, and maybe some DHS stuff

Edit: Im thinking some additional Frozen details at EPCOT as well

- Epcot Frozen and Soarin' 2.0 Concept Art
- Star Wars Land / DHS Revamp Concept Art (The same type of thing that they announced about Avatar in October 2013)

I'd be surprised if we had concept art for anything SW in the parks. Love to see it but I'd bet that after last D23's Imagineering 'empty crate' display that the next logical progression announcement-wise is a where and when. I'd bet the farm on a lot of appearances from stars of the films, maybe George Lucas inducted as a Disney legend, and a several minute clip from December's release.
I agree on the DAK stuff (I just forgot about it). SDL...since I'll never probably go there, for me is a non-event. But yeah, a big DHS announcement I think WILL happen. Also bet that there will be a pretty cool INDY side to things too with regard to films!
I hope they find a dignified way to put Gertie to rest when Echo Lake gets converted into Lucasland/ville/town. Gonna miss her.

I fully expect an Avatar model to be there. I would expect more details revealed on Avatar, Frozen, Rivers of Light and Soarin 2.0.

I would expect the new Marvel coaster for DCA to be announced as well as Toy Story Playland / Pixar expansion for DHS. I would expect a new name mentioned again for DHS.

Lastly, I would expect a one more thing announcement for Star Wars that won't get into specifics. I'm guessing we'll see single pieces of concept art for the lands at Disneyland and Hollywood Studios.

I think this is the most we will get. I would love a full blown HS plan but I don't think they will release it. I personally think they will just start working on the stuff slowly with out the big announcement as it backed fired on them with avatar so bad.

It did? Must have missed that one. Hasn't Avatar always been 2017? And is still slated for 2017? Where's the backfire, exactly?

Yes. The odds of announcing anything new are slim.

The odds of over-hyping already announced stuff? Pretty high.

Star Wars announcements might have to wait until after the movie comes out.

It backfired here on magic, but I don't think it backfired with the general public. Avatar was announced in 2011 and the time between announcement and ground breaking led to roughly 87,000 discussions about whether or not the land was killed since the insiders kept indicated that the land was on life support.

Exactly my point. :)

Or they could wait until D23 Japan to talk about Avatar and Rivers of Light like they did last time.
That seemed to be about trying to convince the Oriental Land Company to buy their own versions. Since then they have committed to their next big projects. An update on the Fantasyland changes would seem likely.
