Crowds the 1st week of June

Anyone ever been the first week of June?

We do know it is Gay Days at the end of the week, so we are working 2 theories on what parks to go to at the end of the week. #1 is stay away from the "chosen" park and go to a different park. #2 is - every other family at WDW might have the same idea (the #1 idea) so it might be smart to go to the "chosen" park.

Your feedback?

That plan works quite well. For the most part the average guest has no clue that gay days are going on. The more informed Disney guest like yourself will be ahead of the curve. You will also have SWW going on that weekend which will make DHS a mad house. If you go to DHS get there a good half hour or more before park opening. If you plan on doing the SWW stuff get there even earlier. If you want autographs you might want to consider camping in the parking lot.

I would suggest avoiding MK on that day at all costs. Not because of any phobias, but it is extremely crowded. I am down with the family every 1st week of June, for the past 6 years. I would venture to say that on the "chosen days" it would be the same at the other parks, however MK is the day that will be most visited by partisipants of Gay Week becuase its usually "Gay Day" that day. You will know who they are because they were mostly or all RED clothing.

PS: Never had a problem with them, however it may be a bit overwhelming to people who are uncomfortable by this... IMO...

All in all, Gay Day would be a day to avoid MK, for the crowds...

i went last year ('08) during the first week of June and honestly...the crowds weren't too bad at all. it was just after the opening of toy story mania so that particular attraction brought some big crowds but other things didn't hold too high of wait times.

we avoided the chosen park and still a few gay people were in the other parks. like a previous poster said that they are usually wearing all red and sometimes rainbow mickey pins and whatnot. but they made no difference than any other visitors. if it wasn't for the red, we wouldnt have even noticed. there was no intense PDA or loud proclaims or anything...so don't believe the stereotypes...

i just wouldnt want to go to particular park due to the extra crowds.

:wave:have a great trip!

Perfect! We figured since it was a bounceback week, the crowds must be somewhat lower.

We have no problem being in the same park as the Gay Day participants, I assumed they know how to behave themselves, just like the rest of us, but we are just looking for the lowest crowds, KWIM? I just wondered how big of an event Gay Days really was, as when I asked my gay friends about it, they acted like they would rather die than be a part of it! But then, they aren't the "wear all red, rainbow Mickey pin" types.

So exciting to know that the crowds will be bearable. This will be our first trip in the heat, so we didn't want to battle huge crowds too!

(who will be at the MK wearing red on 6/6)

Thanks. And I'm glad you will be there, as it seems if it were up to MY friends, gay pride would be a thing of the past

99.9% of them do. Up until last year I have been to WDW during gay days for 5 or 6 years in a row (they also coincide with SWW) and I can only remember one incident and that one was basically nothing more 2 teenagers looking for a reaction. The event does fill up parks though. Just avoid the official park and you will be fine.

EDIT: And if you want to play a cruel joke on you significant other pack nothing but red shirts for him:drevil:

So this didn't even cross my mind to check into this? Just for crowd levels - is Gay Day/Week really a week? When is the week this year? Are there chosen parks? To avoid the larger crowds, how does someone find out this info? (I didn't see it in my Birnbaum book :animwink:). Thanks!

To sum up the info on that site, Gay Days are based around the first Saturday in June. There are "official days" for each park, which were mentioned earlier in this thread.

There isn't really a set period of time that people go for. Many people only go for the weekend, or perhaps make it a long weekend. Others plan a week-long vacation, but even then the arrival date varies depending on preferences and work schedules. (For example, my roommate and I are going down Thursday-to-Thursday, skipping AK's official day on our arrival day, and not going to AK until Monday)

Also, not everyone follows the "official" calendar other than Saturday at the Magic Kingdom. Just about everyone goes to that.
(It's kind of like the "MouseFest" gathering of Disney fan sites, forums and newsgroups in December. Most people go to the MegaMouseMeet on Saturday, but then pick and choose what they want to do of the other scheduled events).
So you can expect crowd size to ebb and flow a bit that weekend, coming to a peak on Saturday.

If you're in the official parks on Friday (Studios) and Saturday (Magic Kingdom), you can expect crowds to thin out a bit as it gets toward the evening, as there are some private-event parties at Typhoon Lagoon (Fri) and the Studios (Sat) those evenings.
Of course, those parties aren't everyone's cup of tea (or within their budget for the high-priced tickets).

And lastly, as a funny story related to the red shirts mentioned above...
The only time I've been down there for Gay Days, I was entering the Magic Kingdom to meet up with some friends. In front of me was your typical Mom, Dad & baby in a stroller. Dad was quite handsome, and happened to be wearing a red shirt. The two guys walking behind me quietly vocalized to each other exactly what I was thinking: "He is going to get hit on SOOO much today..."

-Rob

P.S. - Oh, and as a tip... If you're in the area that Saturday and want to see a VERY large firework display, around midnight try to be somewhere where you can see the sky over the Studios... Whether it's the Boardwalk, Yacht & Beach, or I don't know how far down the pathway to the Studios you'd be able to get...
