Crowds on Labour Day (Monday September 3rd)

I will be in Southern California from September 1-10th. I know the crowds in Disneyland drop like a stone when the first day of school happens (Tuesday the 4th I assume) but what will the crowd be like on Labour Day? I plan on two days at Disneyland anyway and then one at California Adventure. But it would still be nice to know how the Labour Day crowds are.

The reason I don't want to wait until the Tuesday to go to Disneyland is because while the Haunted Mansion is going to be refurbished for the whole trip - which is too bad - there are two other attractions that will be down starting on September the 4th. They are Casey Jr.'s Circus Train and Storybook Canal Boats. They are open on Labour Day and then closed the rest of the time I am there. I know it is a little silly, but I want to see things that they don't have at WDW. So if I go Labour day I can still catch them.

Also, the hours are 9-11pm on Labour day and then drop to 10-8pm on the day after. There are no fireworks the following three days after Labour Day which is another selling point to go on Labour Day.

But I am interested, just how will the crowds be that day?

Last year, I was there on Labor Day (both parks) and the crowds were honestly not that bad at all ... and that's even with it being race weekend.

I would say you're looking at moderate crowds at worst and would advise you to go if you really want to see those attractions before they go down for refurb.

Well, the on property hotels had no normal rooms available for Sat night about 2-3 months ago. And the DLR website shows the hours as 8-12 at DLR, plus early admission from 7-8 for those applicable. DCA is 8-10, plus 7-8 early admission. And there are no blacked out APs that day. They seem to at least be expecting a bit of a crowd... Hoping against it as I will be there as well for the 1/2 marathon.

Thank you. What is race weekend? A marathon run through Disneyland or something?

I am sure that is race related. Plus being the Saturday of a holiday weekend (a new trend in the USA is for people to only go away for one night for holiday weekends due to the economy crashing in 2008 -- and never getting any better despite what some would say -- read a few stories on that)

8-12 are pretty much normal hours for DL on weekends year round, not like WDW. Sometimes, they'll push it to 9-12 and then 9-11 on Sunday, but that's pretty standard. And DCA's 8-10 is already one hour off the summer hours.

If it's anything like last year, I really wouldn't expect exceptional crowds (except in Carsland!)

You're welcome.

Yes, it's the DL Half-Marathon, a 13.1 mile jaunt that goes through both parks, down city streets into Angel Stadium and then back.

A very good friend of mine is running and I'm sorry I won't be there to cheer her on as I did last year!

I see. And what day is that happening on again?

I heard good things about crowds around Labor Day too, that they aren't too bad. I will be there at the same time and running the Half Marathon.

So I am surprised to learn that fireworks aren't shown for the three days after Labor Day! How accurate is this info? I had planned out my trip itineraries when the schedule showed up on the Disneyland website and was under the impression that there would still be all of the same nighttime entertainment! Bummer :( We will have to see the fireworks on Labor Day or we will miss them completely.

Well it is on the Disneyland website so I think it is pretty accurate. This is why I plan on going Labour Day as well so I at least see them once. You can't top your day off better than with the fireworks.

Remember that DLR is smack in the middle of downtown. I wouldn't be surprised if they had to get a permit for each day they wanted to do fireworks, pay for extra traffic details to close off fall zones, etc. But also, the crowds should be dropping significantly after Labor Day as all the locals (DLR is a locals only park, right?????........) will be back at school/work.

DLR isn't in Downtown.

The fallout zones are all within the property. Fortunately you won't find any fallout outside the berm. You're right, the crowds will drop after Labor Day...during the daytime. By evening, people will come from work and bring their kids, so crowds may pick up then.

So yeah.... Not a DLR expert by any stretch. But I guess that comparing the hotels around DLR to the nothingness that is WDW makes it seem like downtown to me. Or maybe that is just where live. So I give up....

Either way, can't wait to run the DLR 1/2!

LOL a lot of people think DLR is in Los Angeles County, but Anaheim is actually in Orange County. It doesn't take long to get to Downtown Los Angeles from Disneyland, though. I can understand why you think that.

Oh you're running the 1/2? I think you'll be running though Cars Land, which should be fun.

This so irks me!! No fireworks or Fantasmic OR Magic, Memories and You! I kind of see what is going on...after Labor day, they only have fireworks and Fantasmic on the weekends. I have no idea how we are going to choose what to do, as I had originally broken up the two nighttime shows over 2 days. But I know that I want to see the MMY show because we never have and because it is special over at IaSW (as opposed to Cinderella Castle at MK).

At least World of Color will be playing and I won't have to stress over that. Even more-so than the other shows, I'm looking forward to WoC. And I'm glad we didn't plan on visiting on Thursday, Sept 6th. Disneyland closed for a private event at 5pm!

You people are killing me! I just found out Indiana Jones will be closed, and now no Haunted Mansion, fireworks, Fantasmic, etc.! I’m also coming for the ½ marathon, I now wish I was visiting the week before rather than the week after. At least I still have my Price is Right tickets. :D

Well, us runners have until Monday for Indiana don't we? Unfortunately the rest of my family shows up Monday so they might not get to see it.

Yes, I guess it's our only option now. I mentioned in the other thread I wanted to avoid Disneyland on that Monday thinking it will be crowded with locals being a holiday. But with everyone here thinking it shouldn't be that bad I'm going to change my plans because Indy is too important to miss.

I also saw tonight that Disneyland closes at 5 on Thursday the 6th for a private event.
