CP - Car or No Car?

I'd like to hear from CP's regarding whether or not you have a car, and if not, does the transportation provided (along with bummed rides, of course) get you where you need to be? It seems that for many people flying in from all over the country it would be difficult to provide a car.

From what I have heard the transportation is sufficent. I have also heard that it easier on yourself if you have a vehicle. If I go down I am taking my car. I figure if I am still paying for it I better use it. =)

I used the bus. It was NOT fun (although I've heard that the CP switched bus companies (sp??) after Dynamic's contract ran out). If I had a choice, I would have brought my car even though I live in NJ. It would have been much easier to get around.

I would definitely suggest bringing a car, I am only part time but I have a lot of friends who are CP's. One of my friends one night and I were @ P.I. and I took them home because the buses take a while...i'd say bring a car. Where do you live anyway?

A co-worker's sister in law took her car when she did CP. She said she was glad that she did. So consider this another vote to take the car if you can.

Well, we live close enough for him to drive, but he has no car, and I'm not sure we can get him one. He doesn't have any money to buy one, either. So he may just have to at least start without one in the beginning...

I wish I could have had my car (look at location to see why did have it) but it was fine with out it. My first time I didn't really know anyone with a car, but it was fine since my roommate and I just liked to hang at the parks and resorts for fun and going to places off property didn't really matter to us. Dynamic was horrible, but it got us where we needed. According to my friends who are down there that got to experience Dynamic and American Coach (the new bus Co.), it is a lot better now. Second time down, I met a bunch of people with cars. Only time I'd really bum rides off of them was coming home from work and going to walmart.

I swear I've seen HI tags at the CP complexes... and PR, AK, and most of Canada too

Yeah, I did see a car there my semester with HI tags. They also went to school in Indiana or something so had it there for school. But for 1 semester in FL, I wasn't about to pay $900 to ship it to Cali and drive it cross country. Plane ticket alone costs enough for me.

I think everyone would agree that it's much easier with a car. There are still a lot of people who don't bring one, and yes the transportation does get you where you need to be pretty much. Dynamic was kind of slow, someone said the new one is a little better, but I wouldn't know since I never experienced it. But yes, when I was there the buses took you everywhere on disney property, walmart, the post office, the crossroads (it had restaurants and stuff), and a Publix (which you can actually walk to from Chatham. Once you get used to it the buses really aren't that bad, plus you can meet people on the buses. If I go again though I think I'd defintiely want to bring my car, but I did okay without one my first time.

Hey guys,

Im applying for the International Programme, but if I were to live in Florida for a year I heard that my Ontario License and plates would have to be changed for a Florida one, also insurance would have to be switched as well. Do you think it would still be worth all that trouble to bring the car. When I think about it I dont even know if it would be able to handle the drive down there...

trust me... you can get away with Ontario plates for a year in Orlando. You're here for a college internship, they won't bother you. My neighbors have had Alberta tags for about 2 years, so if they can get away with it, you can. Just make sure to have your registration and inspection renewed before you leave. Also, as long as your Ontario insurance has US coverage, you'll be fine. I don't know if you'll have to get a US non-resident card, like my CDN non-resident card when I go across.

If you get any trouble from police, just tell them you're here on a College Internship, and they shouldn't have any problem.

Last point... there are so many cars in Orlando with out of state/out of country plates, you should be bothered. As long as its a Make/Model sold in the US, you won't even get a second glance.

I just got off the phone with the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles...

and I'm correct. If you're here on an internship, you can keep your Ontario plates, License, and Insurance provided it remains valid while you're here.

oh yeah... there's no shortage of those on the roads here. Just make sure you get all pertinent maintenance done prior to leaving. Oil change, tune up... new tires if possible. And have your inspection and registration completed a few days before leaving, so you'll have more time on the plates. Worst case, doesn't Ontario allow for 2 year stickers on their plates?
