Sony Teams Up With Disney Parks to Promote Latest Handycam® Camcorders
Six-month campaign highlights new Sony innovations to help families capture and share magical Disney Parks memories

SAN DIEGO, April 2, 2012 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Sony Electronics announced today it has teamed up with Walt Disney Parks and Resorts to promote its latest line of Handycam® camcorders in a new integrated marketing campaign that focuses on capturing and sharing family memories.

The "Share Magical Memories" co-branded campaign kicks off with a unique online contest and dedicated website hosted by Disney Interactive at www.disney.com/memories , where guests can submit a written entry about a special someone in their life, a family member, friend or educator, who has helped create a lasting memory. A panel of judges will review the stories about the special memory makers and select five grand prize winners. Each grand prize winner will receive a vacation for themselves and three guests, plus a vacation for their memory makers and three guests to Walt Disney World Resort. The winning families will also receive a Sony® HDR-PJ260V projector camcorder to document new memories before, during, and after their experience at Disney Parks.

There will also be a weekly sweepstakes on disney.com/memories where guests can enter daily on the site or text "SONY" to DISNEY (347639) on their mobile devices, for a chance to win prizes such as a $200 Disney gift card and a Sony HDR-PJ260V camcorder. One winner will be awarded per week.

"Sony is thrilled to be working with Disney Parks to promote its new line of Handycam camcorders," said Hidenori Toyoda, director of the camcorder business at Sony Electronics. "It's a perfect fit - they create magical memories for families and we make the products to capture and share those memories."

To support the campaign, a series of custom videos showcasing the new camcorders will be produced and featured on disney.com/memories and in retail stores. Some videos will be more educational and showcase the benefits of Handycam camcorder features, including built-in projection, low-light capabilities, Optical SteadyShot(TM) image stabilization, a wide angle lens and high zoom functionality. Videos will also be recorded at the Disney Parks, using Handycam camcorders, that capture guest's favorite Disney memories along with beloved Disney characters. In addition to the video series, the campaign will also be promoted through Sony and Disney's various social media channels.

"We are equally delighted to be working with Sony on this program," said Scott Cassidy, senior vice president, Disney Global Alliance Marketing. "Their newest line of Handycam camcorders clearly takes the idea of capturing and preserving great Disney Parks memories to a whole new level."

The "Share Magical Memories" campaign will also have a strong presence at Sony Stores and select electronics retailers nationwide. As part of the campaign, Sony and Disney will offer a Gift with Purchase program where consumers can purchase Sony HD Handycam camcorders and receive an exclusive, limited-edition Disney item from May 14 through Sept. 30. Additionally, a specially designed experience for mobile phones will feature video and images, as well as allow consumers to enter the contest or sweepstakes.

If the imaging partnership with Kodak is reaching an end, this would be a great place for Sony to rebuild their faltering brand. Where they used to be a top tier electronic company, they are a bottom tier brand in the flat panel TV revolution.

Sony to rescue Imagination? Maybe not gang... Sony is estimated to lose 2.9 billion... That is after a 2.1 billion loss last year. The once giant is in the final throws...

One can hope!

I am familiar with Sony dating back to the 1980's when I was a kid. They created some big name items through the years such as Walkman, and Playstation one as examples.

Sony had money problems for years and I wouldn't trust them for sponsoring a Pavilion or a new ride as a result. What Disney Parks is doing with Sony is the only thing Disney can do with Sony without taking a big risk.

I am saying this because I know for sure Sony's Video game division lost money for years dating back to the ps3 and it has hurt Sony's bottom line in terms of profits. Sony's problem with video game division started with the PSP. Sony put new types of media format that were brand new at the time for the PSP and the PS3. That meant their machines were more expensive then the competition and that turned off consumers from buying a PSP or Ps3 besides taking a loss for every PSP and PS3 game system they sold. The reason I said Sony took a loss on systems they sold is the fact the cost they make for each system is more then the price being sold in stores.

The future of the video game industry isn't going to that nice if the rumors of what Microsoft and Sony are planning to do actually happen. The results if the rumors are true could turn people off from Microsoft and Sony in terms of buying game consoles and that could be enough to make Sony declare for bankruptcy.

What I describing with Sony could leave Disney in a big mess with attractions or Pavilions if Sony isn't careful. I know Sony has other divisions besides their Video game division or products that aren't video games. The truth is though Video games do play a good part of Sony's income.

They just can't keep up with samsung in the electronics market lately. Not only that but samsungs prices seem to be always better than comparable sony products. Its a shame because they do make good stuff, but you have to buy their memory cards and accessories to use them. Even apple isn't as bad when it comes to that.

Someone a while back said Crayola would be a great sponsor for Imagination. That would be pretty killer. Imagine the merch they could push. TDO should love that idea.

You are so, so right! Back in the days of CRT televisions, no one could touch the Sony picture quality. All of their products have remained very well made, but their insistence on their own technology like the Memory Stick is what has really driven consumers away along with their higher pricing, which is better than it used to be. We have Sony, Mitsubishi, and Samsung HDTV's and the Sony ones still deliver the best quality.

I worked in television production two decades ago and their arrogance with the BETA format speaks volumes about Sony. It's funny that when VHS became the standard, in television production, it was the Sony BETA format that actually stuck around.

My dad never worked in television, but still has a working BETA machine and literally thousands of tapes since the local video store GAVE him all of their BETA tapes when they stopped renting them out. He watches something every once in awhile on it just to keep things moving and has gotten pretty good at fixing things on it himself.

He still swears by anything and everything SONY, but I can't say I share in his die hard brand loyalty...

Their arrogance is exactly why I don't like Sony products. I had a problem with a tv from them back in the 90's and it took me a year to get a replacement. They gave me such a hard time. I don't and will not ever own a BluRay player. No one I know even uses a Sony based camera just because of their memory stick.

Because choosing inferior video quality over video quality that looks like an actual film print is worth it due to the fact that a few Sony employees gave you a hard time with repairing your TV? If you really want to stick it to them, you can go back to VHS. lol

True. But have you ever been to the Crayola Factory in Easton, PA? I have and it is no way, shape or form had any real magic. The kids like it, but...

Can't imagine Crayola spending millions to be a sponsor.

But it REALLY would be a fantastic fit to the Imagination Pavillion.

Dreamfinder and Figment forever!!

I'm thinking you'll see them retreating more and more from the electronics division...Video playback is all going digital, Phones are catching up on camcorder, personal mp3, and camera technology. The PSP is not nearly as profitable to make as the licensing for the games...Visio is cleaning their clock in the T.V. sector...

They still have their hand in many other things (Sony pictures anyone?) But really this company is far far from being the company it once was. It may want to read into IBM's playbook a bit if it wants to survive.

With the launch of the Vita and PS4 on the horizon (2 or 3yrs I bet), I would doubt they would or could sponsor anything. The way a video game system works is you sell it at a loss when its new until manufacturing cost comes down. This can take years, they count on the software licensing from the games to make their money. Launching a major system is a HUGE financial drain and risk. So trying to sell more cameras with Disneys help, yea I see it. Sponsoring a major attraction? Highly doubtful.

Is it just me or does the idea of Crayola + Muppets = Awesome. I know that adding characters to Epcot Pavilions is a touchy subject but it's the Muppets....

Of course the return of a smallish purple dragon-like creature would work as well.
