If they use it to successfully develop an effective vaccine I would consider it a bargain! Even if they don’t find a vaccine they still need money to undertake research, which may or not help other vaccine developers.
And if their vaccine fails, no one will ever ask where the money went, and no one will ever ask for a dime back.

Probably not but that’s science. We have blown billions and billions of dollars on things not in the science field, that haven’t worked out and not many seem to question that to much. The 800 dollar toilet seats come to mind. I think it’s a good investment and let’s hope it works out.

Scaled to the same population (i.e. multiplying Florida #'s by 0.9), the curves do not look terribly dissimilar for Florida's current surge and NYC's original. To follow NY, the past 3-4 days should have gone down more sharply, one hopes we'll see that soon. But then again, NY's peak was early April when things were much more restricted than they are today in FL.

Just a shout out as I love the data and graphs that y’all put out.

Think for yourselfer
Comparing Covid with the seasonal flu , other causes of death (we're all going to die of something so why worry about spreading this) mostly old/sick people are going to die so let the rest of us get on with our lives, etc. comments are going to be deleted. They are very hurtful to those who have lost loved ones - especially a loved one who does not fit the profile- who are reading here.
It’s important for perspective. People die. In tremendous numbers. A Covid death is not more important then a lockdown caused suicide or overdose. A Covid death is not more important then a death from an untreated heart attack or stroke thanks to the panic and fear, lockdowns and our general response to Covid has been. We are dedicating our entire society to “slowing” Covid-19. The virtuous “do something now!” Crowd is completely discounted all other causes of mortality. These discussions are important to have.

No one here is discounting deaths from any other causes. This is not the thread for it is what #TheMom is saying. It’s a Coronavirus and WDW thread and she’s trying her hardest to keep it that way.

Well better to have tried and failed, than never to have tried at all.
(As long as they genuinely try.)
Unless of course hydroxychloroquine and zinc work. In that case, we would just be giving away a bunch of money.

A doctor friend of mine uses hydroxychloroquine on his COVID patients with good success, and he recommends that I ask for it if I get COVID. So why are the videos being so quickly banned?

You wouldn't consider the $955 million that Pharma has already been given a profit? That's before they sell a single vaccine. They will get plenty more if/when they actually have a working product.
The money they are getting up front is covering their costs to develop the vaccine, it’s not profit. If the vaccine fails they make nothing off of it. They don’t lose money and the don’t make anything, it’s basically break even. If the vaccine succeeds then they sell it and make a profit. Even if the $955M you are quoting was pure profit, for a company like Pfizer that’s about the equivalent of $0.15 a share. Not exactly a huge windfall for a company with a market cap north or $200B.

It’s no longer legal to use that drug for Covid patients. I hope your friend doesn’t lose his medical license.

I think it can still be used in certain instances. Some fight was going on in Ohio recently.

Which is OK - the first few times it is brought up. But after that it becomes an annoying argument - just as the "but we've got to protect everyone" counter argument also gets annoying. It is a circular argument that goes nowhere and only gets people riled up.

Yesterday, or day before, Ohio reversed the reversal! So you can use prescribe/use hydroxychloroquine in Ohio. They still say it doesn't really work, but even placebos have an effect a significant amount of time, so go for it I suppose.

That’s really sad. Politics should never get in the way of actual medicine.

If the FDA and most legitimate scientists have concluded it doesn’t work, I would hope they stay away from it. Being more dangerous then a placebo, not a good idea. Fauci again had to make a statement about it 2 days ago.

Fauci and Redfield today talking about reopening schools. Talking about it being the default position to get students back in schools and the unintended consequences of not are concerning.

Having been involved in scientific research you can't begin to imagine the cost of equipment, supplies, overhead, salaries just to develop new drug and vaccines--- many of which never pan out or make it to market. All the consumer sees is the end product and has no idea what it takes ($$$$$$) to develop what they are prescribed.
