States have always handled education differently. Each has leeway.

Is that any different than what we have experienced in many public schools over the years?

Education is handled at the state level, I’m not advocating for federal directive here. I’m simply concerned for kids in states who are not requiring home learning, or maybe are but the bare bones of learning.
Those kids will be disadvantaged in the future.

Tomorrow my wife and I are doing Poly noodles w/ vegetables, pot stickers, sticky wings, and one of the Trader Sam's drinks in our ceramic Nautilus.

We made the Perkins Thai Noodles from Skipper Canteen last week and it was real hit in our house. My 2-year old devoured hers (and although we didn't put as much Sriracha in hers, it was still spicy...she is definitely my daughter 🤣).

Here's the recipe for anyone who's interested.

One of my coworkers grand-daughter is still waiting for the school district to put in place an online learning program so its been a few weeks since they've had anything to learn.

My sister is a reading teacher for at-risk kids in a tough neighborhood. She said most of her kids haven't even logged in. She continues to work all day uploading lessons, but these are kids who already weren't getting reinforcement of learning at home. She went back for another master's to become a literacy specialist, but was previously a library media specialist (she's the overachiever of the family) for her K-8 Charter School in an area where 98% of the kids live below the poverty line. When she ran book fairs as the librarian, a vast majority of the kids couldn't afford books, and didn't have a single book at home. My sister would ask family and friends for donations so that she could buy books for the kids, which the kids would "win" so that they didn't feel as if they were given the books from charity.

Although I agree 100% with keeping kids home, it's just such a tragedy for kids like my sister's students, who are likely not getting ANY sort of educational value at all while they're at home, and so many were already far behind 😔

You know what's funny?

The kids that are at failing schools are going to be disadvantaged in the same way they have in the past. The kids who have parents or guardians who have never taken an interest in their education are going to be disadvantaged in the same way they have in the past. The kids who don't pay attention in school or skip class are not going to start paying attention now, whether they have access to online learning or not.

The disadvantages have existed for some time. I guess they are just more noticeable now in this situation.

A state can't mandate home learning if it's done via computer and a proportion of kids don't have computers or internet access. It used to be that they could go to the library to do those things, but where I am, those are also closed. Requiring distance learning would make the inequality that already exists that much worse since kids would fail and it wouldn't be their fault. I don't know what they're going to do about losing months of school, but I wouldn't say that they're being lax by not requiring distance learning if they don't have the funds to go around installing wifi and handing out laptops.

I've been saying much the same thing.
Are we to assume that every kid has a functioning home computer?
Every inner city kid?
My wife is an RN (good job) and I just retired with a pension from a good job, and I have nothing more than a Chromebook - and my wife doesn't always have a well functioning computer.
And our wifi is quite poor.
And that's us, people in a relatively good position in life.
I'd imagine that there must be large numbers of kids out there in various economic situations that weren't ready to just go online and learn, nor have the means or ability to go get themselves pc's.

I can understand parents who may not have the skills or interest (don't understand that) in seeing their kids educated which is sad but how about these kids read a book or many books during this crisis. The ability to read and comprehend what you read is a major factor in your ability to learn other subjects. Many successful people did not have a formal education but were well read

In light of this, we are going to be implementing a variety of necessary measures designed to better position us to weather these extraordinary challenges. Among them, we will be asking our senior executives to help shoulder the burden by taking a reduction in pay – effective April 5, all VPs will have their salaries reduced by 20%, SVPs by 25%, and EVPs and above by 30%. I will be taking a 50% reduction in my salary. This temporary action will remain in effect until we foresee a substantive recovery in our business. Our executive chairman, Bob Iger, has chosen to forgo 100% of his salary.

I do math for a living, and I’ve had to watch YouTube videos to understand some of the math that my kid is doing right now.🤦‍♀️

I'm lucky in that my daughter is in 6th grade. The school provides Chromebooks to all students at that age, so it's easier to stay connected. And she's old enough to self-lean/study for quite a bit, but young enough that I still fully understand all the subject matter to help!

That said, today started our first full week of distance learning (last week was "spring break") and my daughter finished everything she was supposed to do in ~2 hours. :(

I like how he said "asking" them! Is it really a question if you will only accept one answer?

I'm about 6'2" (well okay, just slightly shy of that). About 188 when this started. - I'm going to get to 220 - maybe 230. I'm convinced. Probably by next week.

How wonderful to see Disney executives step up. A good step for sure

"Bob Iger, has chosen to forgo 100% of his salary " , great! for the time being, his pay will exactly match all the cast members that are furloughed...

I guess all the other senior executives are just "too poor" to forgo 100 percent of their salaries......

Some people find the need to find negativity in absolutely everything Disney does around here. SO far, all other cast members are still receiving their full paycheck at least until the 18th of April

Have any other huge companies reduced salaries yet? I've heard of it from some medium and small size retailers and stuff as well as big sports teams in Europe but cant think of anyone else. Although Disney is in a precarious situation considering their portfolio...

I guess it depends on the personal circumstances of each senior executive. I haven’t heard of other companies doing this. So I applaud them for taking this action. I don’t let class envy cloud my opinion.
