Yet another example of a "news" article twisting facts to create a narrative.

There is a fact that flights are being cancelled due to staff testing positive for COVID and causing staffing issues. There is a fact that there is an uptick in cases in Europe. There is a fact that the mask mandate for air travel was removed.

The author then insinuates that fact #1 is due to removing the mask requirement on airplanes when fact #2 is the more likely reason for the call outs.

Then the author compares the situation to 2019 before COVID-19 existed. Well, people didn't stay home from work because they tested positive for a virus in 2019 so it is completely irrelevant.

US airlines had this same issue during the Omicron spike and masking on airplanes was required and still is. The author is of this article is using "news" to advocate for the administration not to remove the transportation mask mandate.

I have no strong opinion about masks beyond wearing one for myself if the benefit outweighs the risk for us. We've been burned before getting sick on vacation and it sucked. I have a feeling our lucky streak might end this time but we can't stop living life. I did secretly like that masks force people to cover their mouths to cough or sneeze lol. Uncovered sneezes during long indoor lines are fun 🤣😭

What I've seen is that when people wear a mask a high percentage don't cover caughs or sneezes at all. They seem to think the mask takes care of it.

**** This is not a political post, I am asking a sincere question, please do not take my post down****

In the US we are fighting over mask mandates meanwhile in China the government is locking down entire cities.

I do not understand this.

Is China trying to stop another deadly variant making its way to the US?

Or is the Chinese government over reacting?

I think China is just doing as they have done before...trying to keep it to close to zero by any means necessary. I don't know how much immunity they have really built up by doing this for so long...outside of vaccines...

From what I've read it's because of the Omicron variant and how transmissible it is. They also have a relatively low vaccination rate in their most vulnerable age group and many were vaccinated with the Sinovac vaccine, which isn't as effective against Omicron as other vaccines.

Is China fighting the same variant as we are, or is there a new, more dangerous variant on its way to the US?

Same omicron variants. Some worry that they will spark another bad one. Not all agree.

This... they tried so hard to do covid zero and their most at risk population is not as trusting of western medicine. So not as vaccinated and not using as effective vaccines too.

There is some reporting to suggest that a "typical" Omicron boom/bust wave could cause a million or more deaths in China:

This has to do with population density in major cities.

My son spent a semester in China in a "smaller" city (Tianjinn - 13 mil) and he stated that NYC felt like a wide open space in comparison. So even at a less than 1% death rate it is still millions of people nationwide.

They have the ability to do whatever they want, so they do. Making people leave their pets to be disposed of, forcibly removing people from apartments so they can put all COVID positive people in one building, all kinds of craziness.

They don't give a crap if its in the US, only that it isn't in China.

Are they overreacting? Sure. But its better than underreacting.

And I care for selfish reasons.
I saw that 40% of their manufacturing is shut, with all the fine merchandise we import from there we will see shortages for years to come from this.
I usually err on the let's be safer side but I even think they are going too far at this time.
