As someone who has talked privately with people here and of course elsewhere, I think sometimes people want to be convinced. Some have legitimate fears of the vaccine for whatever reason. They need a virtual (sometimes literal) hand held. Not all who are scared are head in the sand people. I know I vent here, but when I see someone who is truly worried I try to meet them at their level. Many of us are annoyed and I know it shows sometimes. However the few here who have posted really were legit worried and said as much which is so much easier to be compassionate with.

Kind of like my cousins who are numpty poohs about this, I have little patience for them. It's not a legit worry. One is a vet who has been vaccinated for more than we could ever thing of likely and it's not that. It's purely a sad follow the crazies for them. Then another relative via marriage was truly trying to talk and find out real facts. Their fear and inability to vaccinate was totally different. Granted they tested positive before they could get vaccinated but this time they won't hold back. As soon as the 3 months have passed (monoclonal treatments) they'll be vaccinated. They were going to a month ago but rural pharmacy caused issues and well... anyway. The former is an impossible feeling to deal with. The latter is not.
Some people won't listen, no doubt about it. One can only do so much. You have my respect for persevering and, of course, for being one of the human guinea pigs who enabled us all to benefit from these amazing vaccines. Thank you!

Your post proves my point, though. You didn't just go over and tell this woman she was stupid, did you? You actually tried to have a conversation with her and get to the bottom of why she felt as she did. True, it seems you weren't able to get very far in this instance, but you tried, and you did so by engaging with rather than berating and belittling her.

To be absolutely clear: I am in no way saying that such people should be coddled or left unchallenged. That is very far indeed from my stance. All I'm saying is that we're likely to get a lot further by treating sceptical or brainwashed individuals as fellow human beings.

I constantly give one of my anti-vax coworkers a hard time through jokes. Every time she complains about masks I complain that if only more people would get vaccinated we could get rid of them (with a wink), every time she says she wishes this would end I say if only more people would get vaccinated it might (with a wink), etc.

I laugh, she laughs, our coworkers laugh… but I feel like it’s a lighthearted way to try to convince her without being outright negative about her choice and risking our friendship.

The policies for COVID19 that Disney operates under have been quite steady / consistent through all the ups and downs everyone else has gone through. I think this is something Disney has done right. Have not heard any announcements from the Disney Chief Medical Officer since the beginning.

It’s embarrassing. “We didn’t anticipate a winter surge from a new variant that we have been warning about since forever.”
You mean since November?

"Emergence of Omicron On November 24, 2021, a new variant of SARS-CoV-2, B.1.1.529, was reported to the World Health Organization (WHO). This new variant was first detected in specimens collected on November 11, 2021 in Botswana and on November 14, 2021 in South Africa.Dec 8, 2021"

It might be good to ask without judgment as to why if you feel safe. You never know maybe you can reach. But yes, being a jerk won't help.

I'll be honest I wasn't even a guinea pig as much as others say. I use it to hush up guinea pig criers. Reality is I was phase 2/3 and while I worried some about side effects I wasn't testing dosing like phase 1. Before that too the vaccines evolved from other viruses so I really wasn't among the first. I was glad to do it and I absolutely use it to hush people up. I say it to remind those who don't trust, that there are people who have been vaccinated for a year and a half (for earlier ones). I trust science even if I hate needles. It's definitely a powerful aid to help some. Though I did have a neighbor and former friend block me because of it on facebook. Quite glad our kids didn't remain friends tbh. One less thing to worry about.

Since March 2020. They have been warning of new variants and mutations since the beginning. They know waves happen throughout the year. And they anticipated a winter surge with or without the new variant. It’s inexcusable.

Yeah, terrible the test centers they closed down because people weren't getting tested are being reopened and in addition they are letting you request tests be mailed to you (up to 500,000,000 available) so you don't have to toddle down to the Piggly Wiggly to pick them up.
Really get new shtick

There is a legit shortage of tests right now, whether in-home or not. They are only ramping up just now. But it’s too late. They didn’t prep in advance. Why is that so hard for you to admit? Why must you give them cover for not being prepared? People on this forum have been complaining about lack of testing availability since the beginning. So why the heck is this so controversial to call out now? In-home testing is essential at this point in the pandemic.

Sorry, I can get tests today here.
I have been complaining about the lack of testing from the beginning not the lack of tests available. Testing is the key to making informed decisions and they will have enough. Why do you think the presser was today rather than last Friday? Think someone was in touch with suppliers securing delivery and it took a couple of days to work out?
You presume failure before it even plays out. Do you decry new attractions from the art or do you wait and see what really happens?

I’ve tried, she’s a true anti-vaxxer and thinks vaccines cause autism and other long term health problems. She’s also had Covid and says she doesn’t need the vaccine because she now has natural antibodies.

I almost wish it were a political angle or similar because that would be easier to counter argue. If years of “vaccines don’t cause autism” studies haven’t convinced her no amount of Covid research will either.

I’m glad for you. But That is not true everywhere. We are several days away from Christmas and the poor planning is leaving many people scrambling. They missed the boat on this one. It’s already played out, how do you not see that? They failed already because they were not prepared ahead of time. You don’t act once the has already hit the fan.

Ah that end, gotcha. Though even Mayim Bialik got vaccinated. It's hard against the universal anti-vaxxers really. I assume it doesn't matter that the doctor was a liar and was stripped of their license. Pity that they believe the lies and not the facts.

Ummm, you said people have been getting warned for more than a year? Why didn't they prepare by stocking up on tests? They are available and they certainly knew they wanted TP. Maybe they didn't want these?

I for one do not accept the views of ignorant people. Should I accept the views of people who are drinking bleach and waiting for the magical return of JFK Jr? I don’t think so.

And yeah……the past few pages of this thing have gone all political. Again.

Quelle surprise.
Where are you on this Buddy? I know for a fact that many to most pharmacies around NYC and the surrounding area have no tests and people are scrambling to find availability. Appointments for tests are days or weeks out. This is affecting your community directly.

Absolutely false. There are at least five testing sites within easy walking distance from my apartment, and today there were two pop up sites as well. There was only one of them that had a really long line. I don’t know what kind of availability they have at the pharmacies. The ones near me are always busy giving vaccines so it’s difficult to get near the pharmacy window.

I'm quoting an earlier post of mine that provides some context for why I feel as I do. Perhaps the rest of you are lucky enough not to have someone close to you who has made stupid and selfish decisions but isn't themselves stupid or selfish. In my case, that person is my father. My feelings towards him have helped me avoid the kind of dehumanising anger and callousness that is such a feature of this thread. Pouring scorn on people is not the way out of this pandemic.
I am right there with you. My Dad did get the original vaccine but has been resistant to the booster. He wouldn't let me make an appointment for him when I got here. "We'd talk about it later." Today is my birthday, and so I said I wanted to talk about it. And for an hour we did, and at the end he said, "Since it's your birthday..." and I was able to make the appointment. 🥳🥳🥳

This thread was good practice, and I am thankful for the information everyone has provided, especially @Heppenheimer so that I could apparently, answer his questions well enough. If I had to pick a word to describe his position it would be distrust. Distrust of reporting, distrust of what he perceived as the process. How we decide which studies to follow. He seemed to not understand how the vaccine could leave the body so quickly and still learn how to fight the virus. He brought up Dr. Malone, VAERS reports. I asked how come he is so quick to distrust so much from articles and scientists but so accepting of the things Dr. Malone says. He said he didn't believe it, and I countered with the fact that he was telling me means it must of made an impact on his thinking because why repeat it if he didn't think there was truth in it. Anyway... appointment made.

Tomorrow, we re-enter the lion's den which is Epcot and have lunch at Space 220.

Sir. Did you read my post? you didn’t prove me wrong at all. I referred to appointments and tests available at pharmacies, specifically to take home. Waiting in a long line in hopes to be tested doesn’t solve the availability issue. They are trying with the pop up locations, but they are only needing to do that due to a lack of planning.

you think today they finally surging 500 million tests because availability is good out there?
