If anyone in charge actually believe in the interventions they force upon the populace.
Actually, they probably don’t. This is complicated and serious stuff that hasn’t happened since Western society developed the tools to have advanced medicine. Like the people in this thread, they probably thought, “How can this even be happening.” There is nothing in the experience of these leaders that would have prepared them for this. Leaders in Africa and Asia have more experience with a public health crisis than they do. Western society has gotten used to barreling and bullying its way through any problem. But a virus doesn’t care.

So yeah, I bet they listened to the advice of health officials and in the back of their mind was disbelief. Since PM Johnson did know what it felt like to get Covid he couldn’t ignore it completely so rules were put in place. But otherwise they were experiencing the same emotions as anyone here not used to getting their way. Swinging between “it’s not serious enough to do anything” and “it’s so serious why bother doing anything.”

Their inability to take the situation seriously enough to avoid holding a party doesn’t indicate the seriousness of the actual situation. It doesn’t indicate the mitigation rules put in place don’t work. It only indicates their willingness and understanding. Which appears to be lacking in both. Just because “They should know better” doesn’t mean they do.

But I think the point of your post is to imply they didn’t follow the rules because they *knew* the rules were ineffective therefore no one needs to be following them. Not that they were making emotional choices like everyone else, regardless of what is needed.

By "25 fold" drop, do they mean 25% or 1/25??

If original is 97% effectiveness, 25% drop yields a remaining effectiveness of 72.75%. 1/25 would yield 3.88% effectiveness or rather known as ineffective.
Vaccine Effectiveness and “neutralization activity” are two different measurements. Like height and weight. Not directly comparable, but correlation exists. Larger items are often heavier than small ones.

They only measured “neutralization activity” ie how often the antibodies worked as KevinW stated. Which dropped 25% vs the original tests. Vaccine Efficacy calculations will come later. We can assume that with such a big drop preventing any infection at all is unlikely. But vaccine effectiveness will come down to preventing serious outcomes and it’s too early to calculate that.

However, it is unlikely that the ratio between these two measurements is 1:1. So you can’t just multiply things together like both of your estimates do. Each is calculated independently.

A little afternoon Fauci time for everyone...
Which would be great news and then can we stop the Omicron panic and stop worrying about case counts?

So has any western European nation mandated the vaccine for all of their citizens, across the board?
Austria - last I saw, the age for which this applies hasn’t been decided, but the only exemptions will be on medical grounds

Greece - for ages 60+

Germany - Merkel ruled it out by her successor Scolz has vowed to put it to the Bundestag and has APs aid he will vote in favour

Right now we're hearing that Omicron is more transmissible but not more severe. Assuming this holds up as we learn more in the coming weeks, the lesson to be learned couldn't be more clear.

COVID will continue to circulate. There's a good chance the majority of us, if not all of us, will catch it at some point.

If one is vaccinated, it will be a mild and/or manageable illness for the most part.

If anyone has been holding out on getting vaccinated, this is just the latest in what should have been a string of wake-up calls.

It continues to shock so many of us that so many people continue to fight against the obvious course of action.

A little afternoon Fauci time for everyone...

"It's too early to be able to determine the precise severity of disease but inklings that we are getting, and we must remember these are still in the form of anecdotal ... but it appears that with the cases that are seen, we are not seeing a very severe profile of disease," Fauci said during a White House briefing.
FAUCI confirms 100% Omicron is less severe than Delta. It's a flip flop if he changes his stance later.

"In fact, it might be and I underscore might be, less severe as shown by the ratio of hospitalizations per number of new cases," Fauci added.

But he said the low hospitalizations could be influenced by the fact that younger people are the ones getting infected, since they are less likely to be hospitalized.
FAUCI confirms 100% Omicron more likely to infect young people who will not end up in hospital, EVER.

Fauci, the White House's chief medical adviser, noted that the virus also appears more transmissible, but offered the same caveat that it's still early.

"Real-world evidence is accumulating rapidly, literally on a daily basis, to allow us to determine increase in cases, possible increase in reproductive number and the rapid replacement of delta by omicron in certain situations," he said.
FAUCI confirms 100% Omicron will replace Delta as the dominant variant, in ALL cases everywhere and always.

Fauci also said data about the effectiveness of vaccines on the variant could start to be ready by the middle of next week.
FAUCI says vaccine ineffective. It's time to panic, stock up on end of world items.

The omicron variant has been found in at least 19 U.S. states and 50 countries, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) director Rochelle Walensky said.
That's just what Walensky wants you to think. FAKE NEWS! (I actually saw this one as a real genuine thought on Twitter.)

But while scientists race to find out more information on omicron, cases, hospitalizations and deaths in the U.S. are rising because of the delta variant.

The current seven day average of cases is nearly 104,000 per day, and the seven day average of hospital admissions is about 6,800 per day, Walensky said. The seven day average of daily deaths is about 1,100 per day.
Acceptable. We're done, pandemic over. Is what some people are saying.

"We must act in this moment to mobilize together to do what we know works. We have months of study on delta and all of those data demonstrate that vaccines work, testing works, masking works and that ventilation works," Walensky said.
This one is real, PLEASE do all of these. Please.

Everything before this last quote is clearly sarcastic. At least for the next 3 pages. Then they will be real arguments put forth of what was actually said. 🤣
