New York is constantly running commercials telling people to get tested weekly or biweekly even if they have recovered from Covid19 or been vaccinated. Why? The reason to get tested is to see if you have it. If you had ir in the past, you know your symptoms and should not get tested unless you are sick. So, why is NY encouraging people to get tested anyway? Is it to lower the percentage of positive results? Or maybe it's just to have the Federal Government pay for more testing and employment that is unnecessary. In either case the result is the same. If you want to know the true rate in each state conduct an independent sample. The way testing is done today is not comparable because each state is doing it differently. So I consider the cases per 100,000 number that scientists said anything over 10 is bad is what should be used. NY, NJ and RI are the 3 worst states for Covid19 according to the independent NY Times and NY and NJ have 48% more cases on Average than number 4 South Carolina.
You are cherry picking a stat to make your point. I think someone in the Federal government once suggested our case numbers only look so bad because we test too much. That was wrong thinking then and still is. You need to look at everything. If a state like Idaho has a 25% positive or Texas at 12% they are clearly not doing enough testing and their cases per 100,000 is low compared to actual community spread.

I haven't followed this thread in quite a while but thought I'd share some info and I apologize if others have posted this information in previous pages, I haven't had the time to read through them all. This is from a meeting I had with other healthcare leaders in my state (MI) this morning. The current vaccines seem to be effective against the UK strain, somewhat effective against the South African, and have very little effectiveness against the Brazilian strain. There are thoughts than an additional booster of each type of vaccine will be recommended in the next 3-6 months. This begs the question then if this becomes a chronic or seasonal disease (which seems likely) when do we then relax restrictions due to the socioeconomic and psychological effects that they are having on the population? In my own practice and that of the docs I review the amount of mental health issues has risen 3-4x and we're now seeing the effects of loss of income on our patients' health. No answers here, just some things to think about.

It’s a shame the a pandemic which has claimed a lot of lives has become so political about how things are reported rather than all of us coming together as a country to fight it together. Goes to show you how much selfishness about power and party takes priority over individuals...and this goes for both sides
Anything politicians get involved in becomes political.
They will absolutely corrupt the scientific method for political gain.

Numbers in this article don't align with that statement. I've seen similar numbers in many sources.

"The newest vaccine to gain emergency use authorization from the Food and Drug Administration had a 72% efficacy rate for preventing moderate illness in the U.S. But in South Africa, where a highly contagious mutation of the virus is the primary variant, the effectiveness was 64% effective at preventing moderate to severe or critical Covid, according to FDA data. In Brazil, the vaccine was 66% effective.

(Experts say that it’s worth noting that Johnson & Johnson’s trials took place when the new variants had already become the dominant strains in South Africa and Brazil"

64-66% is not little effectiveness.

Right, what I understand is that the Pfizer and Moderna have not really been tested against the Brazilian variant so it is fairly unknown how well it will work. I say we host a few dozen cheer groups at WDW and see if it is

Wasn’t Walmart one of the National chains that said from the start they were implementing a mask policy but their internal policy was that employees were not to enforce it to avoid physical altercations with customers? I think it was Walmart, CVS and maybe a few others that went that route. So individual stores could essentially choose to ignore the rule and let anyone in.
Publix is very-much hands-on for mask compliance. My son works there, and is frustrated by the fact that ONLY the store manager can say something to someone about a mask, and that's only if someone else complains. And then, the store mgr only approaches and asks/offers a mask. But if the shopper says "NO", they are allowed to carry on with their visit. It's so ineffective.

And, noting that, really what these vaccines need to prevent overall, or at least effectively prevent most of the time, is death or severe hospitalization. Like a flu shot, you still may get COVID with one of the variants, but you'll avoid the serious complications

My son manages a Walgreens and they have the same policy. The police do not have the resources to respond to someone not wearing a mask, and most small stores do not have security officers. It's unfair to expect (and potentially dangerous) to have store employees confronting customers about masks. Now that people are getting vaccinated, the situation will only get worse. Of course, the vaccines will result in a much lower level of actual danger from the situation.

Key thing to note is just that. I've dealt with coronaviruses when they were not as bad as this strain. I'm cool with it becoming more of a mild cold due to vaccinations.

News from the CDC -

"People who have been fully vaccinated against Covid-19 can now spend time together indoors and unmasked, according to new Biden administration guidance.

Fully immunized Americans can also visit with low-risk individuals from other households even if they haven’t yet received a vaccine. And if vaccinated individuals are exposed to Covid-19, there’s no need to either quarantine or get tested for the disease, according to new recommendations released Monday from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“We know that people want to get vaccinated so they can get back to doing the things they enjoy with the people they love,” Rochelle Walensky, the CDC director, said in prepared remarks. “There are some activities that fully vaccinated people can begin to resume now in the privacy of their own homes. Everyone — even those who are vaccinated — should continue with all mitigation strategies when in public settings.”

The CDC considers Americans “fully vaccinated” once two weeks have passed since they received the final dose of their vaccine regimen. In the case of vaccines developed by Moderna and the Pfizer-BioNTech partnership, which have been authorized for emergency use since December, that means the second of two shots. For the recently authorized Johnson & Johnson vaccine, it means two weeks after a single injection.

Roughly 10% of Americans are fully vaccinated, the CDC estimated. But the country’s ongoing vaccination campaign means that number will soon spike. The country is administering over 2 million vaccine doses per day, on average, and President Biden last week promised that the country would have enough supply to vaccinate any adult who wants a vaccine by the end of May."

Here's the carrot. Hopefully this announcement will spark even more vaccine envy and overall acceptance.

I'd bet you $100 that this was already happening among those fully vaccinated.

That's good to hear. My mom called Friday crying cause her doctor said when she got her first dose no visits with unvaccinated people period. Going by these new guidelines we'd be able to visit sooner with DD12 than she assumed. Maybe just outdoor and masked if that make them less anxious.

And I think this is where we are going to start to see the Vaccine Passport chatter pick up.

Correct, since you may not know if you have an unvaccinated high risk co-worker.

Thanks! I'm using this info because we are trying to get better cubicles. As it is now, we are all about 3 feet apart if everyone there at same time.
We haven't gone back yet, but it's coming and I just want it to be safe/reasonable. I'm also suggesting alternate days between home/office for staff.
