I wound never consider a civilization coming together to address a problem - though new and inventive thinking - to be a waste.

But that has only partially happened. So there is a tad of “waste”

Well, I meant more on the personal side of things; I don't think the year should be viewed as necessarily wasted; but for many it feels in some ways life has "paused" and we are missing out or delaying. Call it mass FOMO (fear of missing out) if you will. We wonder what could have been. so yes, its good that we do our part collectively to help ease this, but also definitely should empathize that nearly everyone has a person cost to the events of COVID and prevention measures.

Cali and FL operate like two different Galaxies. Truly Apples and Oranges. As it stands right now FL is by far the most vibrant. WDW is paving the way and continuing to be the bar for other entertainment venues maybe Cali will get a clue. It ain't pretty but WDW is getting it done right.

Can you and @MisterPenguin let me know which phrase to use? Knotts theme park is being used to sell tickets and click the turnstiles... if open is the wrong term what is the right term and I’ll use that.
This is from their website:

Temporary Park Closure

Knott’s Berry Farm and Knott’s Soak City are temporarily closed. Knott's Berry Farm Hotel and California Marketplace are now open. We are looking forward to welcoming you back to the park as soon as it is safe to do so. 2020 Season Passes have been extended through 2021.

I don't know if there is admission and/or turnstile attached to the California Marketplace. But the "Farm" is "closed."

The food events are taking place inside the park.

You can buy tickets for the Taste of Halloween event which is being held inside the park, but with no shows, rides or attractions. I am sure Disney could have done something similar if they had wanted to.
I'm guessing it's something like a food and wine event.
I don't know how much of money maker that is. I think Disney just wants the parks open.

You are missing the point entirely. Knotts is pivoting their business, Disney is choosing to argue with the governor.

Disney opened their food services like Knotts did. It's called Downtown Disney.

Knotts was part of the coalition arguing with the governor to open up the parks (along with Universal and Sea World).

Don't know why you want to make Knotts the good guy here when they've been just like Disney.

In watching the YouTubers this looks like a fun event! It looks like the performers where having a good time too! They even figured out a safe way to give out candy!

It sound like Knotts is having a Fall festival type event which are pretty common in most communities. The tickets are only 35.00 dollars. I'm not sure that something Disney wants to fire up their whole operation to have.

There are so many differences between Knotts and Disney I wouldn't know where to begin.

This probably makes enough money that it would have been worth it for Disney to do something like this.

Reminds me of the community theater I work with. They were so focused on wanting to go back to what we were doing they didn't take the opportunity to do the things we could do.

Disney could charge anything they wanted to charge and only have shopping and dining open on Main Street and the left sections of the park. They’d make a profit on dole whip sales alone.

Oh yeah... and they’d have club 33 open. Why it’s currently closed and not making money is the biggest mystery of them all. Even if they didn’t want to let people into the park, open up a temporary club 33 in the Grand Californian.

Private or semi-private "Walk in Walt's Footsteps" tours
Blue Bayou or Stakehouse 55 open with reduced capacity
All those gift shops open at reduced capacity
Uber Eats Plaza Inn fried chicken

There's lots they could have done.

Don’t know how to link on mobile, but rt.live has r0 at 1 or below since 7/2.

As a reminder: things get out of control very quickly when it goes over 1

Disney is NEVER gonna do that.

In Anaheim...if you drop the price, then raise it...the APs ask “why?”

That way in Florida? Nein!!!

Would I use the word waste?

No. But this year has been tough for me.

I live alone. I can't see my parents much as they are both higher risk.

Without delving into religion, my faith is being extra cautious on this; all meetings in person have been suspended for the forseeable future, and we are on virtual meetings. I am appreciative for the spiritual instruction but miss seeing my friends in person dearly. My volunteer work for my faith has been suspended, so I am doing methods that require me to be alone. Our yearly large gatherings were virtual; this is where i usually see friends who I haven't seen in forever, catch up, make new friends, etc.

I will be missing my close friend's wedding; I already missed one this year.

I am excited to get "back on the saddle" and travel late this year finally, as traveling is my fav thing to do.

I won't say I've wasted this year, but it certainly feels like time has been "lost" in some ways, and that 2021 won't be much different, at least the first half.

It's different for everyone. I am glad that some have been able to experience different things and I don't discount that experience.

But the social and mental costs of this pandemic, while not as great as the suffering of those who are severely ill or who lose loved ones, are there.
Quick note, I just edited the post you quoted. Several posts surrounding what I wrote were deleted. I didn't mean that to sound so cold.

This year has had ups and downs for me as well, professionally and personally. It’s certainly not the year I had planned but in my view it’s only a waste of a year if I choose not to learn anything or get anything accomplished.
