Everyone keeps saying "we can't stay closed forever" and while that's true, we are just in the beginning of the pandemic. No we can't stay closed forever, but we can try to work and mitigate it in its track, which is what we were doing until about a month ago. Opening up right now was a bad choice. If we had kept lockdowns until the late summer early fall, we would have a completely different result than what we are seeing now.
Yeah, probably at least 50% unemployed compiled with everything else that goes along with it.

Opening slowly at a more reasonable pace would have been preferred. the goal has always been to re-open, get people back to work and get life going back towards some normalcy. That doesn’t mean open everything and pretend there isn’t a virus. You can have retail stores and restaurants and even theme parks open with masks and proper physical distancing and it won’t necessarily lead to a sharp increase in cases. Opening isn’t the problem. It’s opening too fast without masks and without proper precautions. There’s still time to hit reset and fix this, but once community spread ramps beyond a certain level it’s much harder to do.

Hmm. Unfortunately numbers have been skewed by counting deaths of people who were at the end of life who also tested positive.

And don't forget the tens of thousands of people that have been hit by a bus while being positive for covid. Plus the end of life people that were hit by a bus that still had covid on it from the last covid person it hit.

In all seriousness if somebody is end of life and they have covid, the covid is probably what pushed them over the edge.

Can I catch Covid from getting hit by a bus....damn, one more thing to worry about ;)

I'm in the middle of extremes. Story of my life. Take care of the vulnerable. Businesses can require any safety rule they want. No need to shut down. No need to close places that are using precautions. No need to shame people for wanting or needing to work. No need to shame those with fear or those without. There are ways to balance living life with safety.
So....... Sweden? That didn’t work so well.

Up until recently, FL wouldn’t test anyone under the age of 65 for COVID-19. The elderly were prioritized so that there would be enough for them. And the local government hasn’t been advertising that younger age brackets can now be tested. Many employees are told to get tested before returning to work, so testing (and positive cases) have significantly gone up. While this is to be expected, it should also be expected that the government didn’t actually know close to the real percentages of positive cases, especially by age demographic, so basing reopening plans based on the data they had was foolish from the get go. You can’t return to business as usual without having a more broad picture of data.

The amount of young people that don’t wear masks and are acting like everything has returned to normal is staggering. Reopening was pushed because the government and businesses didn’t want to continue paying for unemployment and risk more businesses going bankrupt, and it’s because of those businesses that more young people have been tested. And now we’re seeing a sharp increase in cases. COVID-19 doesn’t care if you’re young or old, healthy or compromised - it attacks all demographics. If you survive, a lot of damage is left over. We’re still learning what it does and we’ve hardly begun to see the long-term effects of what it can do.

The masks have become a partisan issue US, when it never should have been. Because it was made political, and because the federal government hasn’t taken a clear stand to promote the wearing of them, Americans are making a big deal out of not wearing them. The ones that are may be wearing them wrong. If you could trust humanity to act in its own self interest, this wouldn’t be such a big problem.

I know a lot of people here are eager to get back to the parks. There’s an extreme cognitive dissonance when it comes to challenging your favorite things, or your world view, or something potentially being an inconvenience. Message boards thrive on fighting and complaining. But seeing people here hope that CMs test positive for this virus and as a result potentially suffering a great deal, or being asymptomatic and potentially passing it on to someone who won’t be as lucky, is absolutely abhorrent.

Whether you like it or not, the parks reopening in a location that is seeing a sharp uptick in cases is ultimately a big problem that concerns everyone.

I have to laugh at the comments of cases supposed to be rising. In Ontario since we have started opening our cases have stayed steady around 190 a day and haven't really risen once.

That was the US in May when we started opening. Wait a couple more weeks. Hopefully people won’t become lax and you can control any potential surges.
Don’t go too crazy on Canada Day.

So far PA has had steady declining cases since re-opening started in May. Most of the state is in full “green” now which is the equivalent to phase 3. The last few counties move there next week and the whole state will be green. In our green phase all businesses are open but there’s still capacity limits on retail and restaurants, a ban on group gatherings over 250 people and there’s still a full mask requirement for all indoor activities and also outdoor activities where physical distancing is not practical. So far people have bought in and it seems to be working. The business owners are certainly happy. It may have taken a few weeks longer than they wanted but the discipline seems to have paid off. Let’s hope it continues.

We have as we are going about this very slowly and we have been fining people for not complying. Restaurants are only allowed patios for now. No indoor seating.

Texas has these same restrictions still. I think maybe some people got carried away though. That’s my guess. Our biggest issue right now I believe is the Houston area. As you are likely aware, 4th largest city in the US and all. I want more data to see what the heck is really up.

I’m in Houston a lot for work and have a lot of friends there. It does sound like there’s been a large uptick. From what my friends on the ground there have told me the mask rules are not being followed very well. Due to the much more mild than anticipated original round of infections in March/April some people may have gotten over confident and are not following requirements as much as they should. This recent uptick could be a wake up call and hopefully people get back in line.

On the current state of mask enforcement at Disney: As I was leaving Disney Springs today a young, fit, 20-somethings looking couple was coming up to the temperature screening. The cast member said to put on their masks and they said they didn't need to wear them because they had an "ADA card". They were denied entry.

Good for them for enforcing the rules. It’s very possible that someone has a medical condition that could impact their ability to wear a mask. It’s best for people who can’t follow the rules to just stay home. Nobody needs to go to Disney Springs. These are not “normal“ times. Better for most people to be allowed to partake than nobody if they shut down.

Apparently these fake cards are making the rounds online as a way to trick businesses into letting you not wear a mask.

The ADA is a law. Not an organization that could issue cards.

I haven’t been on in a while but what is the buzz about how bad the numbers are here and them still reopening? My husband was recalled and this was his first week back... I have him sporting his mask PLUS a face shield.... lol. I told him if anyone says anything to him kick them from 6 feet.

but seriously- he was supposed to be given the option to remain furloughed and since he’s high risk he’d have preferred that for a few more weeks- buuuuut they said it was mandatory for him 🤷🏻‍♀️ So in he went. We are concerned about how out of control the numbers are and him being exposed 😬
