At check-in, has anyone ever requested an upgrade from Garden Wing to Main Tower? Did you have to pay full price or were you offered a reduced rate?

I’m fairly certain that may not happen. You might possibly get an upgrade to a water view in the wings, but a tower room upgrade is substantial move nightly rate wise. But hey, it certainly doesn’t cost anything to ask.

We were upgraded from a garden wing room to the main building at the Contemporary with no charge……18 years ago.
Why? I don’t know.
It was a nice surprise.

On rare, rare, EXTREMELY rare occasions, you may be offered an upgrade for some logistical reason at the hotel, but it would be something they *offered* to you, not something you requested. If you ask to move to a higher room category, they are either (a) not going to have the availability at the last minute or (b) would require you to pay the difference in cost between your reservation and the upgraded room price. They are not going to offer you a reduced price just because you ask at check-in; otherwise, everyone would book lower priced rooms and then upgrade at the last minute.

Happened last week, we just asked if there was a room available now and they gave us a tower room, water view.
Guess maybe if the numbers are down and there are room vacancies and a CM checking you in wanted to plus you and it didn't matter then you got in at just the right time. Never say Never!!!

I haven't requested it, but I got it back in January. It was already a discounted rate; I kept my rate.

Pretty sure they weren't full; I heard a lot of people were getting upgrades. Existing tower stays were getting upgraded to the concierge level and the garden wing was getting upgraded to the tower.

I wonder if there is some reason why, when they are not full, they would prefer to have most or all of the people in the tower. Perhaps having people in the garden wing is logistically more challenging?

Probably. Housekeeping can probably do all those rooms in a shorter time period if they're all in the same location verses spread out.

ETA: the garden wing also is fairly narrow with small elevators. Has to be easier to move those carts down the wider tower halls
