Contemporary Concept Artwork

We stumbled across these pieces of conceptual artwork hanging on refurbishment walls on the 4th floor concourse at the Contemporary recently. Feel free to ignore the glare from the nearby windows and "ghosts" from us and other passerbys.

The refurbishment walls themself (not pictured of course) have been scaled back dramaticly on the concourse from prior work, leaving a large open area where the Pin Station once stood. The seating kiosks have been stripped to reveal the original planters planters too. Small refurbishment walls remainas they're apparently adding a single element at a time.

The second shot reveals that the Mary Blair mural is intend to be left fully with new carpet and coloring set to match it better then the current scheme. Also, the trees in the pictures seem to be a nod to the original design of the resort which featured large plexiglass panel trees. For those with poor eyes (or who can't tell from our poor photography - it's ok, we forgive you) the trees in the concept art reach to about the monorail level and are sort of wispy and leaf-less, with lights or something else sparkly/glowing on them.

Well, of the concepts I know of, the current is the only really non-organic one.

The original had the plexiglass panel trees in red and orange. Then there was a version with wood and stone and that had ivy and topiaries that reached up a few levels. Very sort of yellowstoney looking. Then we have the current dead-ish looking version.

So, i'm all for metal trees with lights.

The Contemporary is pretty sterile, so the metal trees/plexiglass will look good. That's not to say that some organic trees wouldn't look bad either.

This is great! The contemporary hasnt changed since the 80's so this will be fantastic. Last time I was at the resort I was pretty shocked at how outdated and scruffy the whole place was looking. This is a welcome change.

I like it. I think the new carpeting is very updated while still integrating the beautiful mural. I agree that the spindly metal trees with the lights could be pretty cool! Guess we will see soon.

:sohappy: I completely feel that the best way to refurbish or improve something at WDW is to remember what was there before and how that old concept can be modernized. The fact that they are adding modern carpet that complements the 30+ year old mural is exactly what is needed. You have the new and the old elements that seemlessly work together for an appealing look. They did it with the new "The Land" signage out front by using the original tile-mural pattern as a base. Also at PotC, they added the new pirates and modern effects throughout the ride while remaining respectful and true to the story as a whole. This type of redesigning is exactly what WDW needs and I'd love to see more of it, especially in Epcot. Can you imagine enhancements for Epcot's 25th that stay true to the original EPCOT Center motives while refreshing the park's atmosphere? I can only hope!

I think the concept art looks great. I think that using updated carpet in a color scheme that complements the mural is a great way to make the mural look more contemporary. I think the trees look good too and are a great throwback to the previous trees.
