Confirmed Norovirus, returned last week

Hi,

We left WDW on Friday and BAM, my 6 year old gets Norovirus. We just returned from the ER about an hour ago, as he has been horribly ill since Saturday.

Anyone else get sick? We stayed in the Campgrounds in our RV, and cooked a majority of our own food. We DID do a character breakfast at The Beach Club, and I think that is where he got it from and as I have heard from other folks, they got sick there too...

Ah, I'm sorry to hear about your little one and that nasty, nasty virus! That particular virus took down members of my family in Dec. 2008:
-First was my oldest DD (who was 2 months shy of her 3rd birthday), which hit her on a Monday, at 3 a.m., and continued for 12 hours (thank goodness we had a washer/dryer in our villa!).
-Next up was my MIL, with the bug appearing at 6 a.m. on Tuesday, and hit her a little bit harder than my DD and lasted 24 hrs (somehow she mustered up strength and went with the group to MVMCP that evening).
-Next was my FIL, who was hit with the virus the day after my MIL (Wednesday), our departure day (he almost didn't make it onto the plane), and then spent the entire flight, save for the actual take-off and landing, in one of the tiny restrooms (the virus lasted 36 hrs. for him).
-And lastly, I was hit with the bug mid-flight (I was violently woken up 10 min. into a nap) and was incredibly ill for 48 hrs..

It was the most bizarre domino-effect, affecting each person a little bit more and lasting a little bit longer. Out of 9 people in our travel party, 4 were affected, while the other 5 avoided the illness by simply avoiding the virus-stricken individuals (I am amazed that my DH didn't get it...just goes to show who does the "caring of the little ones" in my household!).

I hope your child feels better soon! We all like souvenirs to bring home from WDW, but a stomach-bug isn't one of them!

Just an FYI. Hand sanitizer does NOT kill the stomach bug. You have to physically wash the germs off your hands. You have to ingest 18 particles of the norovirus to get sick. It takes 1000 particles breathed in or ingested to get sick with the flu. That's why it rips through schools, offices, etc. Its a horrible sickness and I wish someone would create a vaccine so we wouldn't have to deal with this crap anymore!!

Agreed.....not in my case though...I can put the blame 100% on the C-Word and its associated treatments...
Me too. Hang in there. I've been this way for 10 years. I still have to be cautious. It's just a way of life for us. Don't let anyone make you feel bad for taking care of yourself. This is your life--not a phobia.
Every time I've heard of someone getting norovirus at Disney, it's been at the pool at the Y&B. I'm sure it's everywhere, but that's the only pinpointed place I've read about except on cruise ships.
Don't let anyone tell you to stay away from WDW if you're so delicate (rude people), we have been going for years, since I've had a compromised immune system, and with extreme caution, I've only gotten sick once. I never knew what it was as no one else in our party got sick. I thought it was a bad cold or flu, but it went away in three days. We had been in the world for 8 days, so whatever it was, I must have gotten it there.
I use both hand-sanitizer and antibacterial wipes since they work on different things. I always use a clean paper towel to turn on/off faucets and open doors. I don't use sanitizer if there is water and soap available to wash my hands. I don't want to make the germs more resistant. Most people still get sick because after washing their hands/using sanitizer they touch everything in site. Adults are just as careless as children. I watched them wipe their nose and then grab the rail in the queue or the lap bar. I've seen moms hand their babies pacifiers that fell on the ground by simply wiping it off with their hands. I've seen kids licking the hand rails. I've seen moms wipe their children's noses with their hands and then grab the pole in the bus etc.
We know the germs are there. We just have to use extreme caution to protect ourselves. There's not much you can do if norovirus is around you. One thing I do is to use regular non-antibacterial wipes to hold onto lapbars and shopping carts. This doesn't kill germs, but it keeps my hands from touching the germs, so I don't have to sanitize every time I ride something at Disney or go shopping at home. I always use a wipe to pull the ball on the end of the cord on the Toy Story ride. For a normal person, this would be overkill, but for immune compromised people, it's a life and hand saver.
I've been doing this for so long that's it's second nature to me. I don't feel any burden having to do this. I was lucky that I was able to home school my daughter, therefore, not having to deal with her bringing illness home.
It's much easier to protect yourself outside of school. I was a public school teacher for years before my cancer, so I know how illness is spread in those enclosed spaces with little or no time for the kids to was their hands. I didn't take my daughter out of school because of this, I was already home schooling her when I got sick. I'm not the norm. My people who have cancer treatments get their immune systems back to normal. Mine is still compromised at 10 years out.

Me too - public school teacher....I do all of the same, hence the reason why I am (knock on wood) OK - LOL....poor little guy though....had to go to the ER yesterday....he has lost 10 pounds from this, and when you are only 55 pounds, thats a lot...

I think WDW should take these things seriously and start mapping the trends. Although I know viruses are everywhere, it just seems too coincidental that after I posted on FB about what happened, people were telling me they too were sick. Too many people for it to just be a coincidence. I am unique in that we have to go overboard to keep me safe....so much so that we opted to drive in an RV and stay in our own environment we know we are safe in. We used the RV bathroom. We cooked at home. My hubby and I didnt get sick, but my son did. The only thing he did differently than us is get his pic with characters at the character breakfast at the Beach Club - and didnt wash his hands after hugging them - he went right back to eating...

...call the Disney "Claim" line and put in a claim, NOT to get anything out of them, but to put the info in so they can log the issue. 407-397-6677
I called to let them know about my son contracting terrible norovirus (Sydney strain to be exact) and if people dont tell them they got sick, they dont know.
I also called the Florida Department of Health and they took our situation VERY seriously, espcially because our situation is very unique and able to be tracked....so if you got sick, call them too....(407) 858-1400
I know that noro (and all viruses) are very contagious in a setting such as this, but there are things that can be done to reduce it that arent being done, such as replacing public access buffets with rubber gloved wearing cast members, notifications about Noro and how to stop the spread, etc....

Oh geez, sorry to hear about your son. I became ill during our first trip to WDW, and my wife became ill with the flu on our last trip! Hope your son is feeling better!

Agreed....little guy is doing *a little bitter....the ER gave him anti-nausea meds so he can stop retching, so at least he can keep some fluids down...he lost 10 pounds because of this....

If you would not mind me asking and not looking to spread panic but what resort did you stay at? Feel free to PM me if you like. Thanks.

Well, we drove down in the RV and stayed in the campgrounds BUT, we did character breakfast at The Beach Club...and we can pinpoint the issue back there...

ya, I am 100% positive we got it at WDW.....looking at the incubation period for it ONLY puts us in WDW, even if you add or subtract a day or two....no where else...
That's the key to useful data. I just don't think they can (or would) do anything unless it was a specific outbreak tied to a particular location. A cruise ship has finite real estate, unlike WDW... But it's a start and would curtail the NV.

How did you pinpoint it back there?
I had the same question. Isn't it pretty much impossible to be sure of where bugs were picked up? Even it can be pin-pointed to a location, what does it achieve? The bug was more than likely picked up from another guest, so it is just a case of bad luck that there was a guest carrying the bug at that location. That guest could equally have been at any of the parks, or any other restaurant or resort.

I dont want to bore anyone with specifics as to my medical condition and the precautions we have to take to keep me safe but the Beach Club was the only place we did something "out of routine"....and not trying to start trouble or anything either (which I feel a bit like I am getting attacked). My conversation with the DOH was very interesting and my issue (coupled with our precautions - which again, makes us UNIQUE and RELIABLE) is being taken seriously. Basically, if it was going to happen, have it happen to us.

I am sorry you feel like your being attacked. I just read through the thread and I don't see that. I think most people are just trying to offer up what they hope is helpful information to you. Anyway, that stinks that your kiddo got sick I hope no one else in your family gets it. That Norovirus is just about the worst thing ever...Good luck to you and your family.
