Agreed.....not in my case though...I can put the blame 100% on the C-Word and its associated treatments...
Me too. Hang in there. I've been this way for 10 years. I still have to be cautious. It's just a way of life for us. Don't let anyone make you feel bad for taking care of yourself. This is your life--not a phobia.
Every time I've heard of someone getting norovirus at Disney, it's been at the pool at the Y&B. I'm sure it's everywhere, but that's the only pinpointed place I've read about except on cruise ships.
Don't let anyone tell you to stay away from WDW if you're so delicate (rude people), we have been going for years, since I've had a compromised immune system, and with extreme caution, I've only gotten sick once. I never knew what it was as no one else in our party got sick. I thought it was a bad cold or flu, but it went away in three days. We had been in the world for 8 days, so whatever it was, I must have gotten it there.
I use both hand-sanitizer and antibacterial wipes since they work on different things. I always use a clean paper towel to turn on/off faucets and open doors. I don't use sanitizer if there is water and soap available to wash my hands. I don't want to make the germs more resistant. Most people still get sick because after washing their hands/using sanitizer they touch everything in site. Adults are just as careless as children. I watched them wipe their nose and then grab the rail in the queue or the lap bar. I've seen moms hand their babies pacifiers that fell on the ground by simply wiping it off with their hands. I've seen kids licking the hand rails. I've seen moms wipe their children's noses with their hands and then grab the pole in the bus etc.
We know the germs are there. We just have to use extreme caution to protect ourselves. There's not much you can do if norovirus is around you. One thing I do is to use regular non-antibacterial wipes to hold onto lapbars and shopping carts. This doesn't kill germs, but it keeps my hands from touching the germs, so I don't have to sanitize every time I ride something at Disney or go shopping at home. I always use a wipe to pull the ball on the end of the cord on the Toy Story ride. For a normal person, this would be overkill, but for immune compromised people, it's a life and hand saver.
I've been doing this for so long that's it's second nature to me. I don't feel any burden having to do this. I was lucky that I was able to home school my daughter, therefore, not having to deal with her bringing illness home.
It's much easier to protect yourself outside of school. I was a public school teacher for years before my cancer, so I know how illness is spread in those enclosed spaces with little or no time for the kids to was their hands. I didn't take my daughter out of school because of this, I was already home schooling her when I got sick. I'm not the norm. My people who have cancer treatments get their immune systems back to normal. Mine is still compromised at 10 years out.
