Conan Gets The Tonight Show!

I do like Conan, although I never get a chance to watch him. But one thing I can't stand is Max Weinberg... I don't know why, but he just annoys me to no end...

What about his announcer, Joel? Assuming he's still alive in 2009, will he be transferred over also? I say this because sometimes he is involved in the skits, and they're usually pretty funny.

And that's partially why I doubt Jay Leno will get anything like the farewell Johnny received. Jay gets good ratings and regularly wins his time slot, but has little respect in the industry. The Tonight Show scarcely gets even an Emmy nomination, no less actually winning one. Critics hate how "safe" the show is and how wretched Jay is as an interviewer. Carson, on the other hand, was the undisputed king of late night talk TV for 30 years.

I agree with you that Carson was the king of late night for 30 years, but he was also sometimes regarded as "safe" in the last 20 years of that reign. The fact is that he was the standard-bearer: the standard by which all others are measured. And by that fact alone, you are likely to be regarded as "safe." Leno knew this, and he also knew the place of this show in NBC's legacy. He has been doing a good job, even though I personally think that he tries too hard to keep the show "modern" and "edgy" in its look. The best value of this show has always been its nature as a good, comfortable, funny night-time friend.

And sometimes professional critics hate things that are not "on the edge." Not everything needs to be "on the edge." The rest of us sometimes appreciate the "safe" and perhaps comfortable, friendly route, with a tinge of excitement every now and then... which in the end was exactly the combination that endeared many of us to Johnny Carson. He connected with the audience and was self-deprecating. Jay does a good job doing the same, but is just not quite there.

The standard-bearer is rarely the critic's darling. But it is valuable, and often welcome to the rest of us.

Joel Godard! I don't see why not.

Conan is the best for one reason:

I heard on GMA today that Carson Daly will possibly take over Conan's spot once he takes Jay's spot.....his show is ok, but I find him, well, 'boring.'

Carson Daly? That makes sense. He'd have a huge edge because he is so well known.

Have any of you been to a taping of the Tonight Show? I had the fun earlier this year. It was so cool. Even better than just getting tickets, we were able to get backstage passes. When we arrived, we were given a pass to the secured lot where the cast parks. Then, we waited in the "green room" until the studio audience was taken in for the show. Until then, we were given access to all the snacks and drinks brought in for the cast and guests. It was just cool - the announcer, John Melendez, was encouraging us to help ourselves to the sandwiches and cookies. Some of the guests came in and we tried to leave them alone so they could relax before they went on camera.

The show is taped beginning around 4:00 p.m. local time, and is taped in real time, meaning the breaks for commercials are no longer than the actual commercials that run. There is minimal editing, and the whole thing is over in about an hour and ten minutes from the time it starts.

As special guests, we were allowed to stick around for a short while after the taping concluded, and take pictures on the set and with one of the guests who stayed around but it was a Friday and everyone (including our host) was eager to get out of there and start the weekend. We didn't meet Jay or Kevin, but we did get a family photo standing by their cars.

Anyway, after all that, Jay Leno is my favorite. How can I help it after getting the royal treatment at a taping of his show?

Hey, MKCP: Who was the guest that you got to meet that night at the Tonight Show taping? Just wondered. You never said in the last post.

(I know, this is an old thread; but hey, sometimes it takes me a while to catch up on my reading! :animwink: )
