Computers to replace Monorail drivers?

My daughter and I rode in the front of a monorail yesterday. I mentioned the fact that we had just come from Vegas, where their new monorail system has been down for three months due to mechanical problems (that almost killed several people). The driver told me that those monorails were computer run and that Disney was thinking of going that route. Can you imagine, no more drivers!?! She didn't know how it could possibly work or when they would do it, but she said it is something that is being looked into. If this did happen, I would be very sad. People need that human interaction. Half the fun of riding up front is talking to the operator. Anyway, if this has already been discussed, I apologize.

How can disney think about Repalcing the Human Driver... He/She is the main reason to feel completely safe... They are trained and not computerized... I hope Disney keeps the Human drivers...

Until a few years back I had no clue people drove them. I remember hearing that one driver wasn't paying attention and crashed into the back of another one.

Computers work fine.

Although it would be a shame to replace the drivers, the driverless system works fine. I work EMS in London where we have the Docklands Light Rail and the only people I've had to scrape up have been doing something stupid and I've never heard of a crash except when it was first built 15 years ago, and that train was being tested.

We were just in Vegas and the 'computer-run' system is shut down because the computer stoped the monorail in between station and opened the doors. Several people started to step out, over the street. Luckly they were all grabbed by other passengers and saved. This is what I was told while I was there so this may just be a rumor. However, several different people told me this information. But even if the computers do a fabulous job, I would still miss the interaction.

I doubt that they would change the monorails over to computer control because of the cost. It would probably only happen if they got brand new monorails, which is not going to happen either.

I feel comfortable with human interaction with the attractions and transport....

Piolots still can poilot the machine... if the computer can auto piolot.. (same with rides... humans can override comoputers....)

*sigh* Another bad idea from Disney.

Not really. The monorails at Tokyo Disneyland are computer run. Its much more efficient and works great. This way, the trains can run all night and no cast members will ever have to work a night shift.

The lady who was driving did mention that.

Umm... what??

Anyways... theres a lot more human error than computer error... and, computer errors usually only come about because of the human programming it...

If this were true, then apparently there is some money in the budget to upgrade the existing WDW. I would be ticked if this did happen in the future. Not only would we lose the human interaction of the monorail driver, but we would once again be lied to by Disney execs about budget cutbacks for the important things to the loyal Disney fans.
