Computers to replace Monorail drivers?

Well, since a Monorail pilot once told me that the TD monorails are Mark 6s, I would not trust them but a computer controlled system could be very good and effecient.

Well, I for one can debunk the "interaction with human" excuse for not going to computer. My wife, daughter, and I caught the front area from EPCOT to TTC and that driver must have been one of the most boring, milk toast, unexitable, no conversation making, all around blah CM's I have ever met. I was really suprised and dissappointed.

But other than that, riding in the front is wayyyyy coooool.

Just a side note... a lot of folks seem to be upset that the Monorail Pilot doesn't engage in conversation with them while riding in the front. I just want to say that they're not supposed to. Their first priority is driving, which isn't a hard task, BUT, thier second priority is to listen to the radio. They must listen to every word that goes on, because it does impact thier driving. Plus, they need to be activly aware of whats going on with the train, and the other trains on the beam. Many drivers have been known to overrun a hold point because they were distracted by interacting with the guests. (overrunning is not stopping for clearance when there is a train stopped in front of you, and a serious safety violation)

So, really, a guest asking "Do you steer???" is not high on thier priority list. (And yes, that is the number one most frequently asked question)

If it does happen, hopefully the OS won't be a Microsoft product. :lookaroun

Well, in theory. But, remember, computers do what thier human written programming says to do. That, and other elements can cause them to malfunction. One in particular that would play a big role with Monorails is extreme heat.

Quick comparison:

Bus drivers: Must steer, watch for other traffic, turn, brake, deal with about 50 people, kids, balloons, strollers, and other multiple distractions, plus, most of the time they are telling jokes and looking in that mirror so they can view the passanger compartment.

Monorail drivers: Dont steer, dont turn, they stop and start, dont have 50 people in the same compartment as them, and they cant concentrate on driving while holding a basic conversation?

Oh paleeeez..........

I can only tell you what I know, based on my experience as a Monorail Pilot. It's a lot more than everyone thinks. But, if you wish to think otherwise, *shrug*

Not trying to diminish your duties or responsibility, just my opinion, which is derived from no experience driving monorails or busses........take it for what its worth....nada :D

I also heard they're thinking of having automated bus drivers. ;) LOL

Why dont they just expand the TTA to go to each park and resort. That would be the easy thing to do. If it rains, get a poncho............

I have driven monorails in Sim City 4. It isn't that hard. You have to control speed, make sure you don't crash and make sure the switchtracks are switched right.

He is not saying that driving the monorail is difficult, that is the easy part. He said that you need to pay close attention to the monitor and more importantly the radio. I don't think you should compare your playing a computer game, to him actually driving WDW busses and monorails.

I wouldn't expect to see the monorails turn humanless untill they relase the new monorials.

As for those worried that a computer running the monorails would be bad, you need to remeber that computers control most of the monorail route already!

Those are the bus drivers that scare the heck out of me. There are many many bus accidents and I would guess most of them are the result of over confident bus drivers with very little experience. Remember, a fair number of Disney bus drivers have only been behind the wheel of a vehicle that size for three weeks or less and not all of that time was driving. The three weeks is the amount of traning Disney provides a new driver and part of that training is on computer.

Well, I was told that the operating system of the new console on Monorail Yellow was Win98. :hurl: And yes, I was also told that it still bluescreens regularly.
