Computer Help Needed

Hopefully someone can help me. I have a two year old computer with a 20GB hard drive (I think) and 128 MB RAM. To put a long story short, I play the Sims and have like, four expansion packs plus the game on my computer and I think it's time I add more RAM to speed everything up. I have no idea where to begin. If I buy a new RAM chip or whatever, how much should I get, and what is involved? Do I have to get new graphic and sound cards too? I want to have it done at Best Buy because I have a $50 gift card that I want to use for part of it. How much would it cost me? Any info would be helpful, because I have no idea.

You may need more speed, but with all that SIMS stuff you need more memory, too. We just got a Maxtor 80GB 7200 RPM hard drive...waiting to be installed. (Ultra series)
The main operating system will be on the original and games, etc will be on the new one. We have all the Sims stuff plus Theme Park and a host of other games that need to be saved freq.
Talk to the guys at Best Buy, I find them helpful (at least the ones here), but we ended up at Comp USA because the deal was better.

The thing to bear in mind is that sometimes adding more RAM will not speed up your system because the processor is already maxed out - can you give details of your system - processor speed, graphics card model, etc if possible crazygirley :)

Tigsmom, no offense meant because lots of people do it but if you are referring to hard drives then it's Storage Space or Hard Disk Space, memory refers to the amount of RAM that your computer has.

Hi crazygirley,

If you still need help, PM me and I'll try to figure out the best way to help you since we are pretty close geographically. It shouldn't be too hard to get a solution figured out.

I just got a Maxtor 200GB Ultra ATA hard drive and additional 512MB of memory.

Well to help you out, the first thing is: What is your processor? If it is Celeron (for example I have an eMachines T1105 with an Intel Celeron 1.0GHz processor). and it is like my system you will need PC100 memory.

There are many types depending on your system. There is PC133, PC100 and thats just SyncDRAM. Then there are diff. types of DDR RAM. So you gotta know that.

Then when you find out what kind you need to know your limits.

Most new systems running Intel processors can take up to 1GB or memory. You also need to know how many memory slots you have. If you have 2 slots and you have 2 cards totaling 128 memory, then you will need to get like a 128 card and then your new memory. Then again if its one card and you have an empty slot then you can just buy a new card and pop it in.

To run the Sims without a slow down I would say you need atleast a total of 384MB which is one 128MB card and one 256MB card.

Now for installing it, all you do is open up the computer, find the slot and stick it in with the gold part down. then it snaps in and the gray colored tabs on teh sides lock it in place.

I am sure if you need more help choosing which memory is right for you, Best Buy can assist. But dont pay to have them install it, its easier to install then it is to buy it.
