Trip Report *COMPLETED* Where's My Map and Other Disneyland Adventures

Hey everyone!!!

We have been back from Disneyland for a few weeks now so I suppose its time to finally start my trip report! (I finally started it @Longers)

So just a quick overview:
Who: My mom (Mary) and me (Megan)
This is a picture of us from WDW when we were there with my sisters in February for The Princess Half Marathon

When: August 5th - 8th (then San Jose until the 11th)

Why: My best friend from residency was getting married in San Jose (is now happily married) and I was able to get a few extra days off from work so why not stop at DL on the way! I was planning on going alone but my mom wasn't too keen on me traveling across the country alone so she agreed to come with me and I am so happy she did!!

Preface: Let me first say that we LOVED Disneyland!!!! I had SO many people tell me that I was going to hate it and that I would be disappointed because its so much smaller than WDW. We were not the least bit disappointed and fell in love with DL and I honestly hope to go back within the next five years (would be sooner if it wasn't all the way in Cali haha)!! Also as an FYI I took a TON of videos of this trip and not as many pictures because I wanted my family to see everything so I will try and edit those too and share them

Ok anyway enough rambling:

August 4th: I had a long 16 plus hour work day so needless to say I was so excited about going on a mini trip. My parents were going to pick me up at my apartment so we could leave from my parents house in the morning. On my way home from clinic I got a text from my one of my best friends that her car was broken into! She and I live in the same apartment complex and her car is parked in the locked garage along with mine so I was shocked to hear this. I felt so bad so I made sure I spent some time making sure she was OK before I got my things to leave. When my parents showed up they too made sure she was OK, but we seriously felt so bad for her because they took a ton of stuff from her car. I was honestly a little worried about leaving my car sitting there the whole time I was gone but she told me she would look out for it and to go on vacation already!

August 5th: I actually slept decently well considering I was going to DL! I don't think it had actually hit me yet since it was in the middle of the work week haha
We got up at 5:30 am and headed off to the airport!
We look....great? JK

After a quick 15 minute drive to the airport we checked in and got in line for security! We actually got to spend some time with my friend Sara and her husband in line because they were leaving for Cali for the wedding too! Anyway we did get yelled at because we had TSA pre-check and didn't realize it haha At least in the end we didn't have to take our shoes off

Finally it was time to board the plane!!!
We ended up sitting behind my friend's Adnaan's parents who were on their way to San Jose for his wedding!

Pretty soon (jk it was like 4 hours later) we were seeing some stuff that certainly was indicative of us being on the west coast !

Ok so a few things about the flight: my mom and I decided to sit in the middle/window seat so we could look out the window! However, the guy who sat next to me literally did not move...at all...like he stared at his computer the whole time. I had to go to the bathroom so bad but I felt bad moving him haha finally when my friends mom got up to go I said to my mom "thats it we are going too." I kindly asked the man next to me if we could sneak past him and he said "well fine, but I would hardly call it sneaking." OK sir sorry...nevertheless we finally felt better after going to the bathroom haha. We did pass some of the time watching Bug's Life in preparation for Bug's Land
Our layover was quick but it was in Vegas so of course we had to play the slots haha

Vegas took all of our money (or just the $5 we played)

You could see the strip from the airport! This is probably as close as I will ever get to Vegas haha

We got some "salsa" for a snack - I put it in quotes because that is certainly not what salsa looks like in Buffalo haha. We still ate it despite our hatred of tomatoes

The woman who sat next to my mom was really into chatting ... she was going to a wedding at DL but was totally hating on Disney. I think once I pulled out my Unofficial Guide to Disneyland she realized she was complaining to the wrong people. The flight was so short it was funny how fast they gave out the drinks and snacks. I really wanted a bloody Mary but a 45 minute flight wasn't the right time haha
Headed to Cali!

We landed in Santa Ana in no time and the airport (John Wayne) was beautiful!

I can't believe how quickly our luggage came! Maybe the Buffalo airport is just incredibly slow...haha
I was missing DME a little - sad I had to carry my own luggage haha
So I had planned on trying to find a cab with a fixed rate to DL but I was too excited so I literally ran outside and got the first cab I could find haha
We didn't take the bus thing because we would have had to wait for an hour for it and I couldn't contain my excitement.
Our cab driver was so nice and we hit a bit of traffic but he assured us Disneyland was only like 20 minutes away without traffic so he didn't think it would take us much longer than that. It took us only 25ish minutes with traffic and soon we were seeing Disney Way (or something haha). All in all it cost us $53 with tip which was cheaper than the flat rate cabs. We got to the hotel at like 12:30 wayyyy earlier than I expected!!

Alright I have to work at like 4 am so off to bed. Next up DL!!!!

Yay!! The Doc is in! I was so happy to find your report today as I always love your little adventures with your family! Sorry to hear about your grandma, but your new nephew Max must have helped make you smile again!

It looks like you and mom are off to a great start to exploring Disneyland. I have only been there once when I was still in high school (many moons ago - how sad) but I am determined to get there with my family at some point soon (like maybe the next 3 years or so). I love the pictures of the hotel room and pool - the headboard is super cool!

Can't wait to see more!

Sorry I've been delinquent haha its been insane at work!

I got really concerned when you said they didn't appear in our doombuggies. First I thought it wasn't working for you, then I had that senior moment of 'wait, were they there?' Whew! Yes, the head-swapping in the doombuggy must be a WDW thing.

My question to you - was the Hatbox Ghost's head swapping? For us, he was nice and bright and clean and all gussied up, but his head stayed on his shoulders.

I know...I really lost my mind there haha. The Ghost head was swapping for us....I actually have a really cool picture of it I will post later!

Day 1 continued (so much for my promise to finish this by labor day...sorry guys! Its been so crazy at work)

After pool time we headed over to California Adventure

Characters were out everywhere! Mickey literally popped out right in front of us so we got in line...look how cute he is in his Cali Adventure costume!

We ran into the Pixar Play Parade but only watched for a minute because I wanted to make sure I could find our dinner place in time.

We were having dinner at Ariels Grotto so we made our way over to Paradise Pier which is so cool!

We had some time to kill so we walked around Paradise Pier to see if we could jump on a ride but everything had just a little bit too long of a wait that we were nervous that we would miss our reservation. We could have gone on the Symphony Swings but my mom had a very bad case of Vertigo right before we left for Cali so we figured it would be best to stay off those We did have a laugh at Toy Story Mania only having like a 30 minute wait...I guess thats what happens when there are other rides in the park to pull from it unlike HS!
We went to the check in desk of Ariels Grotto like 25 minutes before our reservation...which apparently was a no go. We do that at WDW all the time but apparently in DL you can only check in 15 minutes early I was mad haha only because it was so hot

We checked in and then waited another 15 minutes or so before getting to our table. It seemed longer because we were starving since the last thing we had to eat this day was that "salsa"
Some family came in and asked where the characters were They explained that dinner was for World of Color tickets and thats how DL generally worked....that dinner character meals were not very prominent in DL like they are at WDW because there is more emphasis on the shows. I felt so bad for their little girls because they were so disappointed that they wouldn't see the princesses but the family understood and they were able to cancel their reservation for no fee!

We sat downstairs and we were very pleased to be inside since it was so hot haha The restaurant was so cool! It was pretty under the sea colors with sparkly walls!

The dinner is an appetizer, entree and dessert We both ordered water and pops because we were so thirsty.

My mom and I both chose the salad..it had apples in it which were delicious and fresh! The salad was great

We started noticing that literally everyone else got bread and we didn't so I kept trying to get the attention of our waiter and or the man filling the drinks but we didn't get their attention for quite some time...never mind, I still wanted that bread because I love bread and that looked amazing so my mom asked for it and they felt terrible that they forgot to give it to us

I ordered the Grilled Lobster Tail and Red Oak-smoked Honey-Whiskey Barbecue Tri-Tip
It was delicious!!! I am sure some of you may remember that I dislike seafood and that was the issue when hemming and hawing over what restaurant to chose for WOC tickets but I am so pleased I chose this. I actually don't mind lobster and this lobster was very good.

My mom ordered the Sautéed Shrimp and Angel Hair Pasta which was great as well! (sorry for the huge writing I'm having some issues with formatting haha)

The dessert was a trio...and it was delicious! Creme brûlée, Smores and Chocolate covered strawberry )))) All the good stuff

My mom ate all of hers and then took the (tiny) leftover of mine and put it on her plate so it looked like I was the one who ate it all

The diner was pretty expensive but I used my Disney rewards card from my credit card to pay for it so I didn't mind...plus it was totally worth it. We really enjoyed the food and it was well worth it to get a fastpass for World of Color! Really the only tiny complaint we had was that the food wasn't very hot, but for some reason that was a common occurrence in DL anyway. The tip was included in the meal but I didn't think it was enough since it was only 15% so I left some extra money.

After dinner we had some time to kill so we walked around but most of the rides were closed to get ready for World of Color. We ended up on Golden Zephyr which is kind of like Astro Orbitor. I'm surprised my mom even agreed to it since she hates those rides but we survived.

We looked at the lines for World of Color and they were already crazy but we thought we could kill a little more time since it was an hour early so we hopped on The Little Mermaid. It was pretty much the same as the WDW version but it was a nice break.
We finally went to WOC and were very pleased with our spot. We were in the no splash zone but we were right against the railing so we had an amazing view! When you wait for WOC to start you can play a game on your phone kind of like Simon Says where you match the colors displayed on the Fun Wheel to the app. Whoever won then got to control the colors! It was super cool!!!

Then it was time for the show!! World of Color was absolutely amazing! I cried almost the entire time haha. My mom made fun of me but then she started crying too haha. It definitely hit the top show in my option of all the Disney shows I have seen which is saying something since I adore most things at WDW I only took video of it so I will work on editing those soon! As we walked out of Cali Adventure we walked past Soarin which had a 5 minute wait but we were so exhausted (jet lag...) we couldn't bear to do it haha. When we were walking back to the hotel the Disneyland Forever fireworks were going on which was so cool!!!

We got home and quickly went back to sleep

That Creme Brullee was so good! Paper Fast Passes were so annoying haha Having to walk around the park to get Fast Passes made me long for Magic Bands! World of Color was so cool! I will try and figure out how to edit videos so I can post it!

First Full Day at Disneyland!!
The park was open at 7:00 am for Magic Mornings so we somehow managed to get up at 5:45 am The hotel was huge and we had a hard time figuring out a good breakfast place so we pretended we were rich for a hot second and ordered room service the night before. It came around 6:15 am

I had eggs, bacon, home fries and toast

My mom had a Mickey waffle *this was before she put the strawberries on it

The food was good, just not very hot...it was expensive and probably not worth the money Oh well, live and learn haha
I was originally so mad they didn't bring my toast (which I actually never eat anyway) but at the end when I went to grab a napkin from the "napkin basket" I realized it was my toast haha
After this we headed over to DL!
Before the parks open there are tons of line cutting situations going on...like one person will wait at the gate and then right before the park opens 20 (slight exaggeration) of their family members join them in line . The lines are also pretty slow because they take pictures of all the new guests! Its all good though patience is something I need to work on anyway haha.

Soon enough the quasi opening show happened and we were in! In Magic Mornings only a few areas of the park are open so we headed to Tomorrowland for Space Mountain. I fully intended on following the Touring Plans of the Unofficial Guide (I even had the book in my backpack) but as predicted that fell apart pretty quickly haha
Anyway the wait for Space Mountain was nonexistent, just took forever to get through the super long line. I'm glad that we didn't have to wait in a super long line because it would have been very hot to wait that much outside! The cool thing about this Space Mountain is that you get to sit next to someone!

Space Mountain is my favorite ride at WDW so I was looking forward to this at DL...however it wasn't as great as the WDW version. Both my mom and I agreed that it was a lot of going in circles without all the fun dips of the WDW version. Still glad we went on it though!
After this the park still wasn't open so we headed to Matterhorn and waited about 20 minutes.

This ride made me laugh it was so cheesy but definitely a DL classic so it was a must. It was a good ride to do once, but once was enough
Next up was Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage. I personally don't remember ever being on 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea so this felt like a new experience for me I was worried I was going to feel claustrophobic but I didn't and I enjoyed the ride. The middle part is very similar to the Nemo ride at WDW !

Next up we still had some time before the park opened so we went on Astro Blasters
On the way I took this picture thought it was pretty cool!

This ride is definitely superior to the WDW version ride (which is hard for me to say because I love that ride haha) because you can pick up the guns and move them around (and it vibrates when you hit a target). Neither one of us did too well with the game though haha
We wanted to finish up Tomorrowland (we skipped Star Tours because its the same as the WDW version) so next stop was Astro Orbitor. This ride terrifies my mom in WDW but its not as high here so she wanted to go on it

She failed to tell me my ears were on backwards haha

We had planned after this to get a Fast Pass for Indiana Jones but there was a short wait to we hopped in line instead !

The que is pretty cool..but super dark inside so I couldn't get a good picture

This ride was awesome!!! We loved it. Its set up similar to Dinosaur but superior in my opinion! If you ever go to DL...highly recommend it

If you thought Matterhorn is cheesy now, you should have seen it before it was upgraded. I love that ride - it's one of my favorites. I went on it 3 times on my last visit! Once wasn't enough for me.

Lets be honest if the line was shorter I would have totally gone on again It was cheesy but I do enjoy cheesy rides haha Theres an amusement park we used to go to when I was in a kid that is in Canada and it has a ride similar and it made me think of that !

Oh yeah, totally agree not worth standing in a long line. I did single rider, which was much quicker!

I rode the Matterhorn way back in the early 90's when I was 13 but my memory is fuzzy. Did it have gems that lit up and a yeti or am I just getting it confused with Expedition Everest?

My memory is a bit fuzzy, too, but I think you are correct. Back then the yeti didn't move, only roared. The gems were big ice crystals, I don't think they really lit up, but I remember a chime sound that you'd hear going through the area.

Day 2 continued

After taking pictures we headed over to tackle Fantasyland. Our first ride was Mr. Toads Wild Ride. This was a new ride for both of us!

It was....weird haha so weird that you end up in hell but whatever
Next up was Snow Whites Scary Adventures. I don't remember this ride at all from WDW and my mom doesn't either so this was new for us as well!

We got to sit in Dopeys cart

The ride was cute but I could see how it would be scary for the kiddos!
Next up was the Tea Cups but first we found a Giant Whale at the Storybook Canal haha

I think its funny that the tea cups (Mad Tea Party if you want to be specific) are outside

It was getting hot out at this point but I really wanted to try and finish Fantasyland before we took a break so we waited for the Storybook Canal boats instead of the Casey Jr Circus train (which actually broke down while we were in line). They both take you through the little village but the boats seemed to be the less kid oriented of the two haha

I'm about to be eaten!

This ride is so cute!!! Its a boat ride (obviously) and its so neat to see the mini villiage of all the castles and other things you may find in stories!

We wanted to take a break after this but figured we would hit up Its a Small World on the way out. We ran into these guys playing some music

I think Its a Small World looks beautiful from the outside! I wish it looked like this in WDW

Yet another ride that you load from the outside so you start your happy cruise in the outside world

This ride is much longer than the WDW version and whats cool is they have characters from the movies in different countries (i.e. Peter Pan in England and Mexican Donald in Mexico). I enjoyed it very much although I was never an Its a Small World hater to begin with

We decided after this it would be a good time for a break so we headed over to the monorail. The monorail line is above the Finding Nemo Ride

They said over and over again that the monorail comes every 20 minutes but it was more like every 10. It actually started raining at this point and everyone in the park started cheering because California is in a drought and they definitely needed some rain.
The windows of the monorail are half open though so we did get a little wet haha

The monorail brings you to Downtown Disney pretty close to the hotels so thats nice

Next up Lunch and Back to DL

Day 2 continued:
We decided to head to Earl of Sandwich for lunch since its right when you get off the monorail haha
I got the Holiday Turkey sandwich...omg...why did it take me so long to eat this?! ITS SO GOOD!!! I still think about it haha. I got the salt and vinegar chips with it which were good too. I feel like the Holiday Turkey sandwich wasn't always on the permanent menu so I never got it before? Maybe I'm making that up haha

My mom had the Buffalo Chicken Wrap which she said was good (probably not as good as the Holiday Turkey ) and the BBQ chips

After a delicious lunch we planned on going swimming but because of the rain it was actually a little chilly (don't be fooled it got hot like 30 minutes later) so we went shopping instead. I don't think we bought anything at this time we just looked around for things we may want to buy later on.
Since we still didn't feel like going back to the parks just yet we decided to hit up Trader Sams since we heard such great things about it.
Trader Sams is in the pool area of the Disneyland Hotel

We went to the lobby before we walked to Trader Sams because I wanted a first visit pin but they didn't have any so they made me a Celebration pin )

When we got to Trader Sams we were confused if we were supposed to go in or they would serve us outside so we ended up just going in. It wasn't too crowded probably since it was the middle of the day.

As you will see in the upcoming pictures my shirt is approximately three sizes too big

We ordered our drinks then went back outside
I got the HippopottoMai-Tai and my mom had the Passionate Python

You may be able to see that Trader Sams is actually super dirty and the seats were falling apart. It was interesting to see Disney in this shape

I'm sorry to say we really didn't enjoy Trader Sams...I think the dingy environment had something to do with it but it was also super hot out and we didn't really feel like drinking (plus they were SUPER strong which I guess is true of most Disney drinks but these seemed excessive). We drank approximately 5 sips of each drink and snuck out before anyone noticed haha
We headed back to Disneyland after this via the monorail. You go through security before getting on the monorail because it takes you right into the park. It was much more crowded when getting back into the park! The one thing I definitely wanted to catch was the Mickey and the Magical Map show so we went to the little area near Toontown to see it!
This show is super good and I would highly recommend it. Not to sound like a broken record but I do have videos it haha

We headed to Toontown after this. I have zero recollection of Toontown at WDW and my Dad said it was probably because we were only there once and kind of skipped it the rest of the time.

It was definitely the most crowded portion of the park so I don't have too many pictures...I think I started to get a little cranky haha

We walked around a little bit and got some water. Theres a lot of cool little things around but mostly for kids obviously. We skipped the character houses because didn't feel like waiting for them. I did break out of jail though (with my humongous shirt...why I bought this shirt I will never know haha)

I wanted to go on Roger Rabbit's Cartoon Spin but the wait was pretty long so we grabbed a Fast Pass and headed for the train. When we were in line for the train we heard some moms talking about their kids going back to school!!! Holy moly here in Buffalo the kids went back September 8th like a whole month later!
So my mom always wanted to go the Grand Canyon so I was pleased to show her the Grand Canyon that you see on the train
You sit sideways on the train (like facing the side not the front) which is interesting

So you get to see both the Grand Canyon and Dinosaurs while on the ride. I tried to take a picture but I think it was too dark.
We went back to Toontown after a trip around Disneyland and we headed to Roger Rabbit. This ride is also weird but kind of cool that you get to spin the car yourself...I guess haha

We did have dinner reservations but had just a little bit of time to kill so walked all the way to Critter Country and went on Winnie the Pooh. I thought this ride was going to be the same as WDW but it was a little different which was a nice surprise. When we were in line the little kid behind me kept running into my legs His mom made him apologize but he kept doing it then haha
(Splash mountain across the way was so crowded!)

Next up: dinner, roaming around Main Street and Paint the Night!

Day 2 continued:
After Winnie the Pooh we made our way over to dinner at Big Thunder Ranch BBQ
When we checked in this elderly couple was at the window and got upset because they wouldn't take them without a reservation...I can see both sides of the argument here but I did feel bad for them.
We were told we would have to share a table with another family which my mom wasn't super pleased with. I basically snapped at her (I was hungry...haha) to tell the workers that then but she got over it and we ended up sitting with a lovely family from Seattle with well behaved children. I was nervous about eating with another family too but they were very nice and you don't share food with them or anything so it wasn't so bad. The set up of this restaurant is pretty cool its outside picnic tables and a man and woman singing and playing the guitar. The food is similar to Hoop Dee Doo Revue
We both got pop to drink

Corn bread (this was super good!!!)

Ribs, chicken and sausage (we promptly took the sausage out haha we weren't feeling it)

For dessert we split this sundae (well my mom ordered it I took a few bites). I wanted to get the smores but it served like 4 people so seemed like it would be too much for us haha

I thought the food was pretty good...my mom didn't care for it. I agree with her that it wasn't very hot (not uncommon for DL) but I thought it was decent. When she compared it to Hoop Dee Doo she did have a point that it wasn't quite as good! The singing was pretty meh too and a little uncomfortable at times haha. All in all I probably wouldn't go back now that I think about it.

Our plan after eating was to wander around and kill some time before Paint the Night
We looked at New Orleans Square since I love New Orleans. We wanted to go on Pirates but they closed it early for Fantasmic I think...we then wandered for like 15 minutes trying to find a bathroom haha

My mom was approached by a survey person who asked her if we used the Disneyland app. I said "no" when my mom looked at me for the answer *because I do all the planning and manage the apps. Then the women asked a follow up question and I answered again and she scolded me for answering because I wasn't who she was asking (even though I answered the first question). My mom and I were like what the heck haha oh well.
Tons of people were lined up already like an hour and a half before the parade and we didn't feel like doing that so we went to Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln. I enjoyed it but it was freezing in the theater. I laughed so hard at one point because my mom did not recall the Civil War song (the two boys off to war and one died) from the American Experience...because she fell asleep during it haha
We did wander around the shops after this in search of a First Visit pin but no dice so we decided to finally line up for the parade

Yeah, Mr. Toad's isn't one of my favorite rides, just seemed very strange to me (same for Roger Rabbit).

I like the picture of Geppetto's village with the Matterhorn peering over the top, as if to say "Hello down there!"

I also like IASW better at DL than WDW, especially the outdoor facade and additional characters.

I like Pooh at WDW better than DL. I don't know if it's still super-loud on DL's version, but the last time I went on it I found it almost painful, and I'm not someone who ever complains about music being too loud!

And yes, we do need the rain out here desperately. I think we've technically been in a perpetual drought for many years now.

Really enjoying your report! My friend and I are maybe kinda sorta planning a trip to Disneyland next summer.. So this is helping me make decisions! The hotel looks beautiful! I hope I don't compare everything to WDW but I feel like I must experience Disneyland to be a true Disney addict

It's inevitable to compare DLR with WDW, but that's OK because some will be better, some worse, and some just different. Any way you look at it, though, it's still Disney, which means you'll have a fabulous time no matter what!
