Trip Report **completed**Our not so perfect, but good enough July 2021 trip

Hi, all! It took me much longer to get this started than I wanted, but my computer decided it didn't have room for any more of my photos and I had to get an external hard drive and transfer some in order to start! We've also been a little busy getting everything ready for Logan to leave for Iowa in 2 weeks!

So, if you didn't follow along with my PTR, we were supposed to be on a cruise to celebrate Logan's HS graduation, but instead had to switch gears and decided to spend a few days at WDW.

Now, the specifics:
Who: Me (Amy), my husband Brian, Logan (18), Lily (16), and Owen (13)
737734427.jpeg

Where: Cabana Bay Beach Resort and Pop Century

When: July 11-20, 2021

Why: as I previously mentioned, this trip was to celebrate Logan's HS graduation. He asked for a cruise, so I do have another one scheduled for next June and we quickly threw together the Disney portion of this trip (so I guess we can call this his preliminary graduation trip!!)

We had some truly magical moments on this trip and some definitively un-magical moments as well! Unfortunately, our first day held one of the most un-magical moments.

We drove from Ohio and always try to leave very early to try to avoid as much traffic as possible. We set an alarm for midnight and our goal was to leave the house between 1 and 1:30 am. We were spot on!
20210711_011339.jpg

We made a quick stop at McDonald's for Cokes and were on our way. It was smooth sailing all the way to northern Florida. We even made it through Atlanta with no drama or slow downs!!
20210711_121511.jpg

Florida was stop and go the whole way, but we still made decent time and were pulling in to Cabana Bay Beach Resort about 4:00 which was about 1-1.5 hours later than we had anticipated, so not too bad! However, that is official check in time, and the parking area was a mess, as was the lobby!
20210711_155943.jpg

Luckily, they had sent me an email that allowed me to check in prior to arrival and that line was fairly short! The regular line was wrapped all the way around the lobby and was said to be 2 hours long! Brian dropped me off and found a parking spot that he probably shouldn't have been in to wait for me and sent Logan in to the lobby to guide me back to the car!

Now for the most un-magical moment of our trip! I had booked a 2 bedroom volcano view suite as a surprise for Logan since it was his celebration trip and I thought it would be cool to see the volcano lit up at night and watch all the activity in the park from our room. I paid way more than I normally would for a room, but felt it was a reasonable splurge. Well, we get to our room which happened to be on the second floor and this was our view:

Yes, that is the back of a service building and the very tip of the volcano!! I don't understand how they can charge the same amount of money for this view as they can for the higher floor rooms (which I did request)! They need a lower partial or obstructed view charge for the rooms on this floor. I did say something and no one cared at all and basically told me to stuff it! Needless to say, we won't be back there any time soon!

Loving the report so far! Gotta chime in about the pop rooms, they’re one of my faves on property! They are clean, streamlined and super user friendly with all the storage and fold up bed. Definitely not in your face Disney, probably could have used a piece of art on the wall somewhere. But I don’t need Mickey all in my fave when I’m trying to sleep lol. But I totally respect others opinions as well. The good thing about WDW is you have militions resort styles and themes to choose from.

We were not in any big hurry to get to SeaWorld because they didn't open until 10:00 and I have read that a lot of things don't open right away. I also had purchased Quick Queue, so I wasn't worried about the lines. (hint: if you buy quick queue, do it as soon as you know what day you are going to be there. I paid $34.99 and when I checked a few weeks before we left, it was up to $74.99!)

Loved the Mike and Sully bus we passed on the way there.

We arrived at about 10:30.

We didn't have a long wait to go through security, but the bag check part took longer than I would have liked.

We didn't wait at all to enter the park.
IMG_1475.JPG

The first thing the kids wanted to ride was Manta.
IMG_1477.JPG

IMG_1476.JPG

But, it wasn't open yet! And none of the other coasters appeared to be either!

We decided to head toward the rays and dolphins since we couldn't ride anything yet. We had the first meltdown of the day at this time as well! Yes, I do have three teenagers and we had a meltdown!:banghead: Logan had to schedule his move in day and time this morning and he had to have a certain day because the Honors Program had early move in and their own orientation program he wanted to do. He was having problems connecting to the internet and he was panicked! He was being a real jerk about it, but you can't talk to a teenager once they hit that point!! He eventually calmed down and it all worked out fine with him getting the day he needed and an acceptable time frame. (He had to do something else online for the orientation program while we were at VB on Monday. Luckily, that went much better and we didn't have any drama!!)

By the time we were done looking at the dolphins, Manta had opened and we (the kids and I) rode it while Brian waited for us.

I like this waterfall, but people would not move so I could get a pic of the kids in front of it!
IMG_1502.JPG

I love how the shade covers are in the shape of a manta ray.
IMG_1503.JPG

Then we made our way over to ride Mako.

Next, we wanted to ride Kraken. That was the only coaster we hadn't gotten to ride our last trip because it was down being turned into a VR coaster, and has since been turned back into a regular coaster.

We got there, found Brian a spot to wait for us, and were strapped into our seats when...they made us get right back off and leave the line because of incoming weather! It started to rain shortly after that and we tried to wait it out on the bench under a tree that we had found for Brian, but it just kept coming down harder and harder, so we had to find somewhere to take cover.

We headed to the gift shop/aquarium at the end of Journey to Atlantis. I loved the lighting and ceiling in the gift shop.
IMG_1540.JPG

IMG_1541.JPG

The aquarium was tiny, but at least we had something to look at while waiting out the rain.
IMG_1543.JPG

IMG_1544.JPG

The ceiling, where I apparently failed to get any of the fish swimming across!

And the floor:

The only show I really wanted to see was the sea lion and otter one because we had seen the dolphin and orca ones at our last visit. I would have liked to have seen them again, but this one was our priority! It was getting close to the next scheduled performance, so we headed over to the theater. It was delayed, but they eventually let us in the theater.

IMG_1550.JPG

They made an announcement at the beginning that they were going to start, but they may have to stop at any point because of weather. They did have to stop part way through. We waited for awhile before they cancelled it. At least I got to see some of it!

At this point, none of the rides were open yet, so we just kind of wandered around. We came upon the dolphin nursery.
IMG_1575.JPG

IMG_1576.JPG

We did not see any baby dolphins, but this one did swim by and splash Brian!
IMG_1578.JPG

IMG_1579.JPG

We then headed back to Kracken because the coasters were starting to run again. We actually got to ride this time! We enjoyed it, but not as much as Mako and Manta! We were starting to get hungry, but didn't want to wait in the horribly long lines we were seeing at all of the quick service restaurants. So this was our nutritious lunch:

The kids wanted to ride Journey to Atlantis. I let Brian ride it with them since he hadn't done any of the coasters. (I also didn't want to get wet!!) While they did that, I went to check out the sea lions because the kids said they didn't care if they saw them or not since we saw part of the show. I think they were just done with the rain and crowds!

We got back to the room and changed out of wet clothes and shoes. We decided to catch the Skyliner to CBR for dinner because the beverage machines at Pop Century were horrible! The Coke was always flat, they didn't have much selection, and half of the machines were broken!

I think I can confidently say that we won't be returning to SeaWorld anytime soon! I enjoy seeing the animals, but they only have the three coasters, Journey to Atlantis, and Infinity Falls open. Everything else is still closed with no indication of whether it will reopen or not. We chose not to ride Infinity Falls because we didn't want to get soaked, and I don't feel like we missed out on anything.

Sorry I've been MIA for awhile! We leave tomorrow to take Logan to Iowa, so I've been a little preoccupied this week making sure he has everything he needs and trying to pack it so we don't need a U-Haul to get him out there! He's spending one last evening with his buddies, so I decided I would try to catch up a little on my report in order to take my mind off the fact that he is leaving us!

Thursday, July 15 Epcot (and the worst day of our trip!)

I already had our days planned out before they announced the dates for Food and Wine or I never would have picked this day for Epcot and in hindsight, I should have rearranged all of our plans to avoid having this be our Epcot day!

I know others have said they really like Epcot opening later, but I hated it!

We ate breakfast in the room before making our way to theSkyliner. We were in a gondola by ourselves to CBR, but then another party was with us on the way to Epcot.

IMG_1653.JPG

IMG_1655.JPG

We arrived at Epcot about 10:30. As you can see in that last picture, the line appeared quite long to get in, but really did move quickly once they opened up.

IMG_1657.JPG

We immediately hit our first obstacle of the day. A colleague of mine had been at WDW the previous week and her daughter saw the Mickey ear Loungefly backpack and didn't buy it right away because she didn't want to carry it around all day and it was sold out by the time she went to buy it at the end of the day. I told her we would look for it and get it if we found it. Of course they didn't have it at Disney Springs, Pop Century, CBR, or the Contemporary when it would have been easy to get it back to our room! However, they did have it in the gift shop right there at the International Gateway and they only had 4 of them, so I knew I needed to get it immediately or they would be gone. What should have been a quick 5 minute pitstop turned into a 30 minute ordeal because everyone was buying the Food and Wine merchandise like it was going out of style!! Then I had to carry it around with me (which I knew I would have to, it's just frustrating that they still don't have front of the park delivery of your packages!) But, I did get a new bag out of the ordeal because I figured it would be easier to carry a bag with long handles vs the plastic bag they give you! Anyhow, we were finally on our way to Future World!

Our first destination was Test Track. I knew that the crowds were going to be bad and the wait times were going to be long this trip, so I made the kids tell me what the one ride in each park was that they wanted to do, and Test Track was Lily's one must do for Epcot. Since it seems to always shut down in the afternoon for weather, I decided that we would do it first to be sure we got on it. However, since we got a later start heading to the front of the park, we ended up waiting a lot longer than I would have liked! The wait time was listed at 60 minutes by the time we got there, and it was even longer than that because it went down once while we were in line! Luckily, we were already inside the building when it went down and it came back up fairly quickly.

Lily and Owen wanted to create a car together, so Logan and Brian did the other one. Lily and Owen's didn't connect properly which upset them greatly! I told them we could try to ride again later, but they both said they really didn't care (and I felt like they truly meant it, which made me very proud that they were thinking about what everyone else wanted to do also).
