Trip Report *COMPLETED* Once Upon a Christmas Time...A Very Merry Trip Report

Hello Everyone!

We just returned from yet another WDW visit this past weekend and with the holiday season quickly approaching I wanted to make sure I at least started our report before Christmas knowing that I would easily let this slip into January if I didn't.

Just to refresh your memory, this was the first trip we planned as DVC members having joined the club in March. Something we should have done years ago but better late than never, I guess! For those of you who may want to do some pre-reading, here is a link to the pre-trip report that started early this year and now seems so crazy to think the trip has already come and gone.

With that short preamble...let's start the show!

The Main Characters
My wife, Kelly, and I, along with our two Disney Princesses, Ella (7), and Lennon (5).

Here we are on our summer 2016 visit.

The Script
Once our DVC membership was completely finalized in March and we had access to the booking system we started thinking about our next visit. Kelly and I had spent Christmas in WDW way back in 2009 and we loved how the parks looked and felt decorated for the holidays. We figured this would be a great opportunity for us to head back around Christmas time and give the girls their first taste of a Disney Christmas.

Originally we booked accommodation for December 7-16 at our home resort, Saratoga Springs, and waited for the 7-month window to open to have access to other DVC options. Once the window hit we made our move. Our intention was to try and get the Grand Floridian knowing it would be next to impossible with a backup plan of either the Beach Club or Wilderness Lodge. Both BC and WL were available and we eventually decided on the BC because of the great Boardwalk location.

After we secured a one-bedroom villa at BC we decided to add another day to the trip because...well, why not! The 6th was not available at the time at BC so we ended up booking the additional night at AKL. I would periodically check back to see if the BC was open and one day, to my surprise, a one-bedroom lake view at the GF popped up. I quickly called the member line and made the switch from AKL to the Grand thinking this was likely the only chance we'd ever get to stay there so might as well take advantage.

Now we were all set and all that was left to do was wait out the remaining months and for once look forward to winter!

We planned and planned and planned as the days ticked by. Kelly and I escaped kid free to Denver in November to watch the GOAT, Tom Brady, crush the Broncos...something I have always wanted to do and finally was able to check it off the bucket list.

Once we returned it was all Disney, all the time as we were now less than a month away!

THAT UPGRADE THOUGH! :jawdrop:
Following along! Your girls are just the cutest!

Thanks so much! I'll say it every time...they take after their mom!

This is incredible! What a way to start your trip! Sooooo jealous! :joyfull:

Such a memorable experience.

Each time I have stayed in Sago Cay I’ve wondered what the inside of the Cape Coral suite looked like. Thanks to your lovely pictures and fun video, I now know! What a magical surprise for your family!

I would have been more than happy walking into the villas but it was so cool to have this opportunity.

Ummm holy crap what an amazing surprise!!! Congrats on that upgrade! What a great way to start things off.

I felt bad as it really overshadowed the room at the BC, which was still great, just not as great!

Love the video of the suite and the look on your girls' faces. I'm so glad I found your trip report. A great read for a snowy day. And I have to add "Go Vikings"!

Thanks for reading...stay warm!

I'm in!

I would have had the same reaction when someone told me my room was unavailable... Lead with the good news!

He played it very well. The whole interaction with Stephen was terrific. He really set the tone for a great trip.

With the excitement of the room still flowing through all of us, we finally decided to find something to eat. This was our first trip using the dining plan and not having done it before we weren't exactly sure how it worked but we figured it couldn't be too hard to keep tabs on.

We made the quick walk from the room to Gaspirilla's to grab a bite and our refillable resort mugs. Kelly ordered a smoked ham sandwich, I went with the sausage and pepper pizza and the girls both ordered the kids hot dog meal. We ended up getting a Minnie Mouse Cupcake as a dessert as well. Instead of eating outside the restaurant we hauled the food back to the room to eat on the patio and get ready for the fireworks. I think I was either tired from travel or too overwhelmed from the room to remember to take photos of the food but I did get a picture of the cupcake before digging in. Sadly it looked better than it tasted. The pizza was quite good though!

Once we finished up the kids were running around through the suite until the fireworks started up. The score was playing in the courtyard so we could kinda hear how it was coordinated but it wasn't crystal clear from where we were. Still super cool to have our own private show in a sense.

After the fireworks I snapped a quick pic of the moon near the Contemporary it was huge in the night sky.

Now that the show was over we were starting to hit the wall but since we at concierge access we wanted to head back into the main building to check out the suite level. I'm happy we did...it was awesome! We took the elevator up to the 4th floor and walked out being greeted by friendly CMs and a buffet of tasty goodies. Small sandwiches, pastries, desserts, coffee, beverages and a fully stocked bar were at our disposal. Even having just eaten the kids were happy to indulge. As they filled their plate with Kelly I took a few shots of the lobby. What a view!

The band was playing Christmas music and the scent of the lobby wafted up making for quite the stunning scene. It was pretty surreal.

Now that the kids had their goodies I grabbed a Stella from the bar and met Kelly at a table to kick back and relax. The girls found a nice spot to enjoy their own nightcap for a few minutes.

By now we were all beat from a long day and it seemed like a good time to head back and hit the sack. I took a couple of last parting shots to soak it all in before turning in.

We got back to the room, finally got the girls settled into bed and retired to our room for a little rest. The only issue was our luggage had yet to be delivered but at least we knew it was in Orlando thanks to the handy tracking feature on the Delta app. Actually, this was our first time flying Delta and I must say I was very impressed. We usually have to fly United based on where we are and have had many less than favourable experiences with them so it was great to have another option that turned out very, very well.

After a few phone calls to bell services, they couldn't be located our luggage on the first call which made us a tad nervous, the bags were delivered right around midnight and we could finally get some sleep. I had planned to try and sleep in but at the same time wanted to get up early to enjoy a morning coffee on the patio before our first charater meal at 1900 Park Fare.

Great running into you as well! Crazy how the timing worked out to allow us to cross paths.

Having watched the "Decorating Disney" special last night it really made me miss it. Amazingly no snow to come home to which is very weird for this time of year. Almost doesn't quite feel like Christmas without the snow.

I know you are actually the first forum members I have ever run into in Disney World. It's great that everything worked out that way. Hope you enjoyed your time in Disney Springs that afternoon. I can't believe that was our first day and the trip is over already.

I have the "decorating Disney" show on my DVR. I am holding off watching it until the weekend so we have a little Disney Magic to look forward too. Even with the snow it doesn't feel Christmas is this weekend. We have been so focused on the trip that we haven't really thought about the holidays much.

We can definitely relate! With the amount of time leading up to our trip, it's so hard to fathom that it's already come and gone. Kelly is already on a big kick to start planning another visit next year. Who knows, I guess?! Disney Springs is really incredible now with how much it has changed since the Downtown Disney days. We made a few visits there this last trip but still needed more time then we spent.

It is kind of a weird feeling knowing Christmas is just days away but it really doesn't feel that way for the same reasons as you mentioned. We decorated the house and everything and have pretty much everything squared away gift wise but even so, it still doesn't feel like Christmas. I'm sure it will once we start doing our traditional gatherings on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

I'm still on page 1 but wanted to comment since you said you guys went in December of 09. What time frame did you go and where did you stay? That's the only trip we've been on during December was in 09. I think it was like the 5th through the 15th or something like that. It was also our first on-site stay with FD.

Also, as a 49ers fan, thanks for Jimmy G! Just wish we had traded for him about 9 or 10 weeks ago...

I'm in! What an amazing start to your trip! Talk about pixie dust :joyfull:! The GF is my dream resort. Loved seeing all the details of your magnificent suite!

Thanks for reading! I was kinda regretting staying at the Grand because of our late afternoon arrival and the amount of DVC points it cost but knowing we’d likelt never stay there again I was ok with it.

After the experience we were greeted with upon arrival I was over the moon happy with the choice! Hope to stay there again some day but if not at least we’ll always have this to look back on.

Thanks for reading. We were there right over Christmas in 09. I think it was something like the 18-26. We stayed at the Swan that trip. Our first “on-site” as well!

That Jimmy G trade had me upset when it happened. Happy he’s getting his chance but wish they’d have held onto him a little longer

Was hoping to post more before Christmas but doesn’t look like I’ll get the chance. Hopefully be able to keep the report going in the coming days but wanted to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and all the best in the New Year!

Merry Christmas to you and your family!!
(And here’s hoping Santa brings you a patriots loss on Christmas Eve! Haha)
