Trip Report COMPLETED- I Couldn't Love You, but Here's $0.25 in Souvenirs- Celebrating 10 Years of Kid Trips to Disney

We began our adventures early on the morning of February 5th. Just before 7am CT, we had my vehicle loaded up and ready to go. I’m not sure how we did it, but we managed some room for the dog so we could drop her off for boarding (aka Camp!) on our way out of town. I guess I shouldn't have been surprised. She gets comfortable in the strangest positions...

I haven’t set foot in my office since March 16, 2020, so I have no idea what rush hour really looks like these days or if Fridays are still lighter traffic days...but it was a breeze getting out of Houston.

I have no pictures for you until shortly after Lafayette, LA. I was driving up until this point, but after a series of urgent texts from my boss, we decided to stop and switch drivers. I’m not a big fan of critical conference calls at the start of my vacation, but these days, I’m thankful to be gainfully employed. After I got off the phone, I took a few pics as we were driving through the Atchafalaya.

It’s probably for the best that I wasn’t taking pics prior to this. Everything around Lake Charles, not too far west of this area, is still showing a lot of damage and tarps from the 2020 hurricane season, so it's pretty depressing. I also hate driving over the Mississippi in Baton Rouge, so I was pretty happy to have David at the wheel.

Speaking of David (and everyone else), if you want all of the details, please take a look at my PTR. https://forums.wdwmagic.com/threads/family-return-to-wdw-take-2.971452/

Now, if it looks rainy and gloomy...it’s because it was. We were at the leading edge of a front that was moving east. The rain stayed with us for a good portion of the drive.

50912470921_c0ff159fa3_z.jpg

In light of everything Covid, we didn’t stop at any of our usual lunch spots. I packed a small cooler full of lunch stuff and we stopped at the Mississippi welcome center to eat. Unfortunately, it was really chilly, so we ate in the car. That didn’t stop a ton of pigeons from surrounding us in hopes that we’d drop some crumbs on the way to the trash.

50912602042_17e37c003c_z.jpg

I was aiming for Tallahassee for the night. That’s usually where we wind up when we make good time, but we’d left so early that we were in Tallahassee by dinner time...even with losing an hour when crossing into the Eastern time zone. We didn't even have traffic with the tunnel in Mobile! Not sure why we decided on Whataburger when we have tons of them at home and this one was way off the highway, but we went a bit out of our way to eat at this one for who knows what reason. At least it had a nice little drive-in area to park and eat.

50915171003_17f6c94374_z.jpg

Somewhere in between Pensacola and Tallahassee, we also developed a bit of a car problem…

50915855166_9bd66c7dce_z.jpg

50931651393_818565f737_z.jpg

Somehow, my front sensor got blocked, which in turn disabled all of my front end safety features...as well as my cruise control. I’d had this happen once before, but it quickly corrected itself. This time, it wasn’t going away. The rest of the trip both to Disney and back would be done without cruise control. I felt like I’d jumped back in time to my first car!

We could have stopped for the night at this point. It was late enough that it wouldn’t have been crazy, but it was early enough that we felt the need to push on. So, I booked a hotel in Gainesville and we kept driving. I lived in Gainesville for several years in the early to mid 90s, so it always feels a bit strange to go back, but it was the best option for the night. It took a little bit of time to get all of our stuff upstairs, but by driving a bit farther this evening, we could all relax a bit and sleep in a little the next morning. And silly...we could be silly.

We slept in a little on February 6th. I think it was around 9am when we went downstairs to grab some breakfast to bring back to the room. It was mainly just some cereal, fruit and hard boiled eggs. We couldn’t sit around too long, because we remembered that I forgot to get cash. I couldn’t remember if the toll plazas had switched to toll by plate (they had) and I’d need some cash for tips upon arrival at WDW. So, we waved good-bye to the LaQuinta…

50931651398_b3907a04aa_z.jpg

And headed to Publix…

50932461472_8a43d76ef4_z.jpg

I didn’t spend a lot of time in there, but it was really strange, because this was the Publix we’d shop at when we lived in Gainesville. It just happened to be the closest to the hotel. It also was in the same shopping center as a restaurant I used to work at for a couple of years...so a real trip down memory lane.

With cash in hand (and an extra stick of deodorant purchased so I could get cash back), we were on our way to WDW. I also got some time to call and set up an appointment to get my vehicle in the shop when we got home (more on that later).

David was driving, so I was actually able to take a few pics on my phone when we arrived.

50915866811_0393bf4a09_z.jpg

This was also his choice of arrival music. I still don’t get it, but he’s got a pretty fun Idina Menzel impersonation. I regret not taking video, but I was taking pictures.

50915996637_5dd07eab22_z.jpg

50915868921_699811458f_z.jpg

I’m sure most of us have experienced this, but between my phone, the MDE app, and our magic bands, they knew that we were on property. I immediately got notification that our room wasn’t ready, so I wasn’t expecting much upon arrival.

50932338506_547527319e_z.jpg

After getting a multitude of welcome homes from the security booth attendant (Kendall had all kinds of questions about this practice), a very nice guy with bell services helped with our luggage (who looked kind of funny at the big air mattress I had in the mix) and a woman, who magically knew it was me, told me she’d messaged housekeeping to put a rush on our room. So, all there was left to do at this point was park and figure out what to do with ourselves while we waited. Since I’d canceled our B&C ADR, we didn’t have any place to be until 5pm...and it was 11:48am. Hey, I told Disney we’d be showing up around noon.

Coming up...managing the wait, first impressions on our room, and an evening in Disney Springs.

David forgot he was having his picture taken. He had his head down, so you have sort of a floating portion of a hat for him.

Not sure why, but David decided to have us cut through the Odyssey.

I do think this little presentation on changes coming to Epcot is kind of neat, but I was thinking about food and drinks. We’d also gotten a text from my parents while we were in SSE that they had arrived, but were working out some details with their room. So, I wanted to get into a better spot to meet them in the WS.

You know what happens when I'm procrastinating with my workout? Another trip report post. It's like Disney MAGIC!

David was on a mission to get some beer (Carlsberg) in Norway, so that’s where we headed first. It is a tradition for him, and I think they were out the last time we were here...so even more of a must.

He told me about some frozen drink they also had, but it sounded strange. He kept pushing hard on this one, but I said I’d think about it.

Here’s where things get a little crazy. I’m getting texts from my dad about room stuff and ECV stuff and things from the girls about food. My dad’s were really more FYI, so I focused on the kids for the moment. Apparently, they were hungry, but Kendall had very particular food objectives and the only thing she wanted was a pretzel in Germany. Sam didn’t want a pretzel, but Kendall didn’t want to stop anywhere else. So, we started getting all of these “SHE’s NOT GOING TO LET ME EAT!!!” SOS style texts. We’d already gotten an earlier one where Sam refused to ride Frozen with Kendall. I have a feeling she would have been better about it if Kendall agreed to TOT. Around this time, I also got a text that my parents’ room was ready and they’d be on their way into parks soon since my dad also got his ECV. So, we told the kids to just come to us if they can’t work together on things. I mean, I did not want to spend my day officiating their fights...so either they work together or they get stuck with the adults.

There was a lot of bickering when they got to us, so we did a divide and conquer move. David took Sam to Mexico to grab some food (nachos) and I took Kendall on Frozen. Side note...I had a taste of Kendall’s pretzel and YUCK! I’m hoping it was soft when she bought it, but it was rock solid when it got to me. And into the trash it went!

50936670431_d04154a4f1_z.jpg

As you can see, the line started in China, but I recall it wasn’t a bad wait. I’m pretty sure that says 15.

50936781847_7df56a54bb_z.jpg

We were inside pretty quickly. I also found it interesting...the couple in front of us were doing the opposite of the people we encountered on the line at LWTL. Instead of being right on top of people, they were doubling up their space. So, instead of moving up to the next “stand here” marker, they’d always leave one open between them and the next party. Obviously, if everyone did this, there would be serious line management issues, but I do appreciate people taking precautions. Oh well, I took pics…

Still not a huge fan, but I think I was even more bummed that we got no fun with the Oaken this time. Oh well.

When we got back to where I’d last seen David, he had one of these waiting for me.

50936774872_ff2293f113_z.jpg

I know I’ve seen mixed reviews on this, but I really liked it. If it weren’t festival time, I probably would have had another.

I don’t think I ever got a pic of Sam’s nachos...maybe she took it and forgot to text it...but she was floored at the price and thought they were just OK. I had a taste and it tasted like nachos. LOL

We wound up hanging out in Norway for longer than I’d planned. I got a text from my dad that they were in the park and wanted to meet us. I said we were in Norway and could walk to them, but they opted to meet us where we were. So, I sent him a landmark pic so he could find us.

50923472548_2ee45ab4a4_z.jpg

We ended up waiting longer than expected because my parents went to Germany instead of Norway. I forget what tipped him off. In the meantime, we watched all kinds of little girls running and screaming because Anna came out to say hi. I laughed because there was a time when that would have been our kids. Ahhh...the good old days…

5264196063_332244c5e6_z.jpg

My parents eventually found us. The kids said their hi’s and hello’s, gave some air hugs, and agreed they could get along so they could go off on their own and do more stuff. It felt a little less enthusiastic than I was expecting, but I think it’s because my parents really haven’t been out much since everything started to lock down. At least they’d been fully vaccinated, so that was some peace of mind for them. Oh well, it was time to move on with our day...and the kids wanted no part of this. Let’s be honest...we were planning on doing a drink and food crawl, which would surely be boring to them. So, they ran off and we made our way towards China.

50935974453_44f65c37dc_z.jpg

We saw some royalty along the way...and they were kind enough to wave at us peons.

50935973688_e872229a01_z.jpg

Such a pretty drink! Especially now that I have the right straw for the boba in the bottom.

50936773512_936f07a1c1_z.jpg

I think this has lychee in it, which is a flavor I love...but I think I was supposed to stir it or let the bluish purple part sink. It didn’t take long before I was consuming pure alcohol and it became undrinkable. Don’t worry...I still drank a lot of it.

Everyone else got the punch…

50935973533_b8511e688c_z.jpg

My mom couldn’t have a lot because of the medical issues she had in 2019 with an esophageal tear.

After these drinks, it was time to walk and possibly find some food.

50936773047_e30b1180fc_z.jpg

And of course, I got something extremely nutritious.

50936660906_b84888a556_z.jpg

3 out of 4 of the adults love Opera cake...and one was like whatever. This was pretty good.

On to more food!

50936772547_33dfbebc75_z.jpg

David was in this bizarre festival frame of mind and was thinking Germany should have sausage on a stick. I told him he’d have to settle for a brat on a bun, but he wanted to check anyway.

This was our next stop…

50935972183_b6b2f4dee1_z.jpg

We decided it would be best to have the food getters and the table getters, so David and my dad got into the line for food and my mom and I hunted for a table (or trash can in a few cases).

Considering the cost, I was surprised how heavy handed they were on the saffron for the ravioli. I didn’t have any, but my parents said it was good. David and I shared the arancini, which was decent.

On to more food!

We stopped for a little bit of live music while David went to check on some things.

50936770937_a90eb9a823_z.jpg

No Dooney’s in the parks for me this time (not after I turned part of my 40th bucket black from a day in Epcot and mom had to fix it), but mom brought one of her totes.

50936658856_3c1e1cd089_z.jpg

We were still waiting on David, but the performers came to the back and chatted with a guest while we were waiting.

50936658041_d337b4b00e_z.jpg

We were near the next spot where we wanted some goodies, but David still being in festival mode, had to have one of these.

50936658281_801acbe798_z.jpg

Before my dad and I ventured off to get food for us, I had David get in line for the art picture op in this area. I had an idea and was hoping he understood what I meant. Oh yea...he got it!

50936657751_45a1cc8cdf_z.jpg

Photopass photographer stationed at this point was laughing hysterically. It’s always fun when we can bring some joy to a CMs day.

OK, fun picture achieved...now time for food.

50936769317_1bd8304649_z.jpg

We both got the Beef Wellington and I also got the chocolate flight. The CM if I wanted the version with alcohol...ummm...yes!

50936657036_e071ca9650_z.jpg

The kids were also at each other’s throats again, so the little heathens decided to hang closer to us for potential damage control. One of Sam’s school/softball friends was also in Epcot and was staying near us at YC, but it’s vacation time...so nobody wants to be hanging out with people they see all the time. So, they just texted the whole time. Kids!

50936656466_e9bf238599_z.jpg

Sam “needed” more food, so she followed David’s lead.

50936768632_fbd0b57b75_z.jpg

50936656896_a495795a7a_z.jpg

And Kendall was being a teenager.

50936656691_60d4c85eb7_z.jpg

We saw the princesses go by again while we were seated.

50935968143_a998951d23_z.jpg

And then we got The Voices of Liberty!

50936767977_0a864880b7_z.jpg

This started a big discussion with me and David. I think they’re wonderful, and when people ask what my dream Disney job might be...this is one of them. David, on the other hand, thinks they’re awful and everything sounds like they’re trying too hard. He said it reminds him of a karaoke party we went to in my symphony days where everyone was trying to sound good and not just having fun with it. I tried explaining how multi-voice part arrangements and choral arrangements work, but his mind was made up. His loss!

We started walking after this, but I was having to take things slow because the chaffing pain was starting to get pretty bad. Still, we’re walking.

Not exactly the most unusual offerings in the doughnut, but it was good and filling. Never pass on a doughnut! Words of wisdom.

And we’re walking to our next stop…

I wasn’t getting anything, but while David went in search of one of his customary drinks, my parents got this lamb shank...which was supposedly amazing.

Everybody enjoyed the cake, but the brie was kind of strange. The taste wasn’t as buttery as I’d expect and the texture wasn’t creamy like it is at home when I melt it. It almost was curdled or a lightly chunky...it kind of reminded me of how cheddar gets if it separates. It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t great either.

At least we were finally getting some time with everyone. With the pandemic, it had been over a year since we’d seen my parents. I’m really thankful that my brother’s hospital was able to get them in for their vaccine doses, considering their ages and health issues.

50935963513_c7c1d259c6_z.jpg

Before moving on, I got to walk back into the Ratatouille area.

50925726228_23ca88119a_z.jpg

So exciting...new bathrooms...said nobody. Oh wait...what about the Potty Time with Rapunzel bathrooms in MK? LOL

There were some things in the UK and Canada David wanted, but I was done. The pain was getting to me and I was ready to head back. I told him he and Sam could go if they wanted to stay in the park…

Coming up...what would they decide, an evening celebration, and losing more stuff.

I have to laugh at my posts sometimes. I was reading over what I posted last night and realized something was missing.

Like...who's "this guy" that's not invited? Like did some creepy guy come over and want some food? Nah...it was just an ibis.

Not as good of a story as it would have been if some random guy approached us. Hey, stuff like that happens to me too. My friend says I look like a talker! 🤣 Maybe she's right. Even with a mask on, people I don't know approach me all the time and it's usually on totally random things. It's amazing if I can get out of the supermarket without having someone strike up a conversation. Strangest recent one...my thoughts on tape. Seriously.

I was about to ask what you meant, but you cleared it up. Yes! Those birds (Ibises? ibi?) stalked us in Germany! No, they weren't getting my schnitzel.

Sorry, the "ibi" reminds me of my first trip to Vegas waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back when. We were there for a friend's vow renewal and we had been having quite a bit of fun at her bachelorette party. We wound up at Studio 54 in the MGM, and there were a bunch of Elvis impersonators just hanging out. I walked up to them and excitedly yelled "OMG...ELVISES!!! Or are you ELVI???" They weren't amused, but I sure was! :hilarious:

You take the best food and drink photos!

Sushi doughnut? How have I not heard of this before?

Love the Washington crossing photo!

Thank you! :)

I'm not sure if it just comes out for this festival, but it was a good snack/meal option. It was just salmon, tuna and shrimp, but still very tasty.

If he were more into social media, I think that would be his profile picture on everything!

My mom couldn’t have a lot because of the medical issues she had in 2019 with an esophageal tear.

After these drinks, it was time to walk and possibly find some food.

50936772147_d32327b24d_z.jpg
Sausage on a stick? Is this something he just thought of himself, or is it something he thinks they do in Germany. I've certainly never seen it if they actually do it.

Considering the cost, I was surprised how heavy handed they were on the saffron for the ravioli. I didn’t have any, but my parents said it was good. David and I shared the arancini, which was decent.

On to more food!

We stopped for a little bit of live music while David went to check on some things.

Voices of Liberty are one of my favorite things about Epcot. I can just sit and listen to them all day. They are amazing...and that's coming from a trained singer with a degree. David is nuts!

Ok! So David trying to feed George Washington a turkey leg might have to be a thing! I love it!

And that's just it...I don't know if he's trying to feed him, or if he's using it as a pointer to guide George onward. Either way, one of my all time favorite Disney pics!
Thank you for taking your time with your Trip Report in Epcot! It is by far my favorite part of Disney Vacation. Your pictures were great as well as your input! I want that sushi donut!! Yummo!!!

You're welcome! It's been a few years since we've devoted time to the food and drink of the WS, so I was really excited for this day. And now I want sushi! :D

It's a festival/carnival thing. I can't say I've ever seen it done in Epcot, but you see it a lot in Texas and parts of the south. They'll put pretty much anything on a stick...sausage on a stick, gator on a stick, waffles on a stick. His brain was thinking festival and just gravitated to things on a stick.

Yes...this was the sign that he's nuts. And he's had enough musical exposure with me. I mean, he knows I started college as a voice performance major and am classically trained, he sat (and often slept ) through many of my concerts during my years with the Houston Symphony, so he should know better. Oh well...his loss!

I meant to post earlier, but I've been feeling dizzy all day and getting progressively more grumpy about my vehicle situation. Oh well, better late than never.

I think everyone was kind of ready to head back to the resort.

Still no Skyliner rides! We talked about walking back, but someone insisted on the boat. I think it was Kendall. My dad was worried about the ECV, and while I know Disney is great with this stuff, it was his first time using one. So naturally, he was a bit nervous. Either way, it looked like we’d be taking the boat.

50936650066_89daf11f98_z.jpg

No issues with boarding my dad, but they had to move my mom around to accommodate another passenger with mobility issues. They also made it clear that normally they tell us to squeeze in to take up all available space...and to not do that.

And we have arrived!

50936648896_515a615d07_z.jpg

I had a little surprise in store for three birthday people. My mom turned 70 back in the fall, David is turning 50 this spring, and my dad’s birthday was at the end of January. So, I’m sure those who are familiar with my reports knows what that means. That’s right...CAKE!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had to order from the GF bakery and they would be delivering it to the BW front desk. I said around 7pm and it was a little bit before, so I wasn’t sure if they’d be there yet. Still, in the past, cakes tended to be delivered early. So, I figured I’d check. David and my parents stayed downstairs at the BW and hung out in the covered patio in the wicker furniture, Sam went to the room to grab utensils, and K came to the front desk with me. So, I took some pics while I waited for them to check on things.

50936760892_7b02a52bb5_z.jpg

I swear, our recent winter weather issues must be getting to my brain. I looked at the plants in that pic and wondered how they fared with the winter weather. Ummmm, they’re inside, in FL and just fine. Losing it!

50936648526_051cf5f14b_z.jpg

It took several CMs to figure it out, but after a mild scare, we were informed by one of them that the cakes were on their way. She said she’d spoken to the GF about them earlier in the day and was aware that they’d be making their way to the resort soon. She took my number so she could call me when they arrived.

We waited outside a little bit longer…

Take a good look at that picture above...that’s going to be the last time we see something of Kendall’s in that picture.

The wait kept dragging on, so we all decided to head upstairs and get comfortable. Then my parents would come to us for the surprise on our balcony when the time came.

I don’t remember how much time had gone by, but I got a call that the cakes arrived and after some whining from Kendall, the three of us went down to the lobby to get the boxes.

I never really know what to expect with cakes. I’ve had a couple that look just like my sketches, a couple that look nothing like my sketches, a couple where I give them a description and a couple where I just gave a character name and let them roll with it. That’s what I did this time. The Captain Hook cake was supposed to be black, so that was a surprise. I was also surprised with the numbers and the treasure chest. I really thought they’d just pipe on the numbers, but those are solid white chocolate. I guess they added the treasure chest because Hook looked pretty bare next to the others.

The Stitch and Captain Hook cakes were chocolate with chocolate mousse and the Elastagirl cake was vanilla. Yeah...I did get a little worried on that one. While we were in DHS the previous day, I got a call from the bakery clarifying that I wanted the mom...and not the daughter. She said the order just said Elastagirl. Ummm...the daughter is Violet, so yea...the mom. Just kind of odd to get that question from a Disney person.

As for the cakes, I don’t know why, but that Stitch cake was the best. I also think I may need to go back to being more specific the next time I order a cake. These were cute, but a little basic for my tastes...to the point that I kind of regret not being more invested in the design process and asking for things that are a bit...more...well...involved. Oh well. Since we are celebrating the last 10 years...here’s the bulk of our Disney cakes over the last 10 years.

Now I want cake! I’d also like to note that we’re going on 10 years for that Belle cake and I still haven’t been forgiven for biting off her white chocolate head!

We ate our cake out on the balcony and then said our good-nights...and that’s when Kendall went nuts. She couldn’t find her wireless headphones. I got blamed for moving them while cleaning up the room for guests, but I still firmly believe that she left them outside. I was in my pajamas by this point, which involved some shorts with a few holes. Sorry...thought I was going to bed and had gotten comfy. First I took her to the area we were seated. I wasn’t going to dig for them...these are hers and it’s on her to find them. She just glanced at the area and said they weren’t there. They could have easily been blending into the white wicker or fallen on the ground behind the chair, but she didn’t want to invest the effort to really look...so I wasn’t either. She wanted to check the lobby to see if they were turned in to the front desk. I told her OK, but that she was doing all of the talking. She flipped out about that, but it’s the only way she’s going to gain some understanding about responsibility. Hey, she was already horrified that I was walking around in my holey pajama shorts! Not like we want to draw any more attention to me. They didn’t have them...and even though she’d scour the room at the end of the trip, they never turned up.

This kid is notorious for forgetting things, so we’re really trying to make her learn from her issues. Prior to the trip, she lost her softball glove. Thankfully, she just left it practice for her private team, but it took several days to confirm that her coach had it in the team trailer. In the meantime, David had to buy her a new glove (which has since been returned) just in case it didn’t turn up and we had to start breaking in something new. Most recently, she left her Hydro Flask at school and it hasn’t turned up. She can just use an old water bottle as far as I’m concerned, even if it’s not trendy. It’s a darn good thing iPhones have the find my phone feature, because that thing goes missing in plain sight at least once a week. Also why she inherited my old phone and didn’t get treated to a pricey new one! So, now the poor child is stuck using old school headphones with a cord. Such a tragedy! Oy.

Coming up...we return to DHS.
