Trip Report * Completed* For the First Time In Forever We'll Have Magic, We'll Have Fun

Hello @Longers @Doc Disney @prfctlyximprct @Tuvalu and my fellow Disney fanatics. Welcome to my 2016 Princess 5K Trip Report!

Who: Me (Lisa) and my younger sister, Tina
When: February 17 -22, 2016
Where: The Poly!
Why: 2015 sucked and we were in desperate need of the magic and protection of the Disney Bubble. And oh yeah, my 50th Birthday!!

How this trip came about:
In December of 2014 my sister suggested that we do something, just the two of us, to celebrate my 50th birthday. Knowing that she loves Disney as much as I do, I suggested a Disney trip. I'd been reading lots of runDisney trip reports so we decided that it would be fun to run in the Princess 5K. Tina had run in a few 5Ks, but until we came up with this idea I had never run a 5K in my life.
Right away I went into planning mode and started researching resorts and planning our tentative itinerary.
Then, in April of 2015 our mom, who has dementia, became very ill and needed surgery followed by a lengthy stay in a skilled nursing facility. At the end of April our dad, who was our mom's primary caregiver, had a sudden loss of his short term memory. Tina and I began taking 24 hour shifts of staying with and caring for our dad. As our mom improved, our dad declined and he passed away at the end of June. The remainder of 2015 was a blur of finding an assisted living community for our mom, clearing out & selling our mom & dad's home and dealing with all the other details that go along with that.
Throughout all of this, the thought of our Disney trip lifted our spirits and kept us going. We decided that along with celebrating my birthday, our trip would also be a celebration of our dad and our wonderful family of four.

Here is a photograph of our family on our first trip to Walt Disney World in the early 1980's.

This is one of our favorite family photographs. Tina was not happy that they put her in that sailor suit, but she was a good sport and smiled anyway!

While we were cleaning out our mom & dad's house we found a box containing all of the maps, pamphlets, guide books, and our mom's notes for every family vacation we took.
We were super excited to find these:

Up next: Our trip begins!

After narrowly escaping the shark we entertained ourselves (and probably some onlookers) by making fish faces.

Since we were near the Land Pavilion I suggested we ride Living with the Land. It's such a relaxing ride, rarely has a line, and would be a nice break for our feet. Speaking of breaks for our feet I forgot to mention that I hit my daily fitbit goal of 10,000 steps when we were about a third of the way through the race :).
So we are heading for Living with the Land and just as we get down the steps a bunch of people materialize and the CMs have to send us through the queue. We waited like 20 minutes because they were not filling the boats . I was really bugged because if they'd filled the boats even halfway we could have been through the line in half the time. I knew we'd now be cutting it close for arriving for our ADR on time.
I must say that even though I was aggravated by the unnecessarily long wait, I enjoyed the vegetable boat ride as much as I always do.
The people on the Behind the Seeds tour seemed to be enjoying themselves.

We got off the vegetable boat ride and power walked over to World Showcase. As we were scurrying through Mexico I saw a man and woman that I thought looked familiar. I couldn't figure out how I knew them. A few seconds later it dawned on me that it was the @brifraz family! By the time I realized who they were and looked back, they had disappeared into the crowd. I was really sad that I hadn't recognized them sooner because it would have been really fun to meet someone from the boards.

We arrived at the Biergarten about 10 minutes late. We were given a pager and decided to walk over to look in a shop and the pager went off before we even made it in to the shop. We had chosen Biergarten in honor of our dad. He was born in Germany and we thought this would be a great way to remember and celebrate him. We were taken to our table and we each ordered a beer. Our dad always enjoyed having a beer so this was a must. I'm not sure which beer Tina chose but I know she liked it.

I had read about the Schöfferhofer Pink Grapefruit Hefeweizen and wanted to try it. I am not a big beer drinker so my opinion is simply that, my opinion, but I really enjoyed this beer. It was a warm day and I found it to be very refreshing. We made a toast to our dad as we listened to the German performers. We really enjoyed the show. The German drinking songs were fun and we really felt like it was a great way to remember our dad.

We headed for the buffet. I didn't get a good picture of our plates because it was dark in there. But we enjoyed pretty much everything we ate. The cucumber salad tasted just like the one our Oma (German for Grandma) used to make. The potato salad was pretty close to hers as well. We loved the pretzel rolls, schnitzel and Spätzle. For dessert we enjoyed the Black Forest Cake and apple strudel. We were seated with a family from Ohio. They were from Columbus, I am from Cincinnati and Tina lives more near Dayton. They asked about our medals so we told them about the 5K and the Princess Half Weekend events. Then we headed out to explore a bit more of World Showcase before heading to the Grand Floridian for our massage at the spa!!!

You beat me to it! I haven't had time to start my report yet. My photos are still on the memory card in my camera. Loving it so far!
Glad to have you following along. I am excited to read your report. I will be watching for it. I thought about you guys the day we left because I remembered you would be arriving as we were leaving.

Like the Everest pics and the pics with the Dole whips!

Great outfits for the run and congrats!
Thanks! I am not a great photographer but I wanted to add an element of fun to my photos.
We were happy with our outfits. We saw some really great ideas for future outfits if we get to do another runDisney race.

So after stuffing ourselves at Biergarten we wandered around World Showcase for a short time and then headed for the monorail because we had an appointment for a massage at the Senses Spa at the Grand Floridian!!!!
The massage was Tina's idea. I must admit that at first I was hesitant because I didn't want to lose park time, but when I really thought about it decided it would be a great treat after our race. Afterward I told Tina that this was one of the best ideas she's ever had !

The Grand Floridian is my dream resort. In fact, my plan is for my husband and I to stay there when I finally retire from teaching!
Anywho, I loved walking around the GF and exploring the resort on the way to the spa. We arrived at the spa about an hour before our appointment time because when Tina booked the appointment, the CM told her that if we arrived early we could relax in the hot tub and just relax and enjoy before our massage. We did just that. We soaked in the hot tub which felt great on our tired muscles. Then we were called back for our massages.
Let me just say, BEST MASSAGE EVER :inlove:!! In fact I was so relaxed that I may or may not have fallen asleep at one point . I heard a noise and wondered what it was, then heard it again and realized it was me snoring :hilarious:! My massage therapist was kind enough to act like she didn't notice. At the end of our massage we relaxed with a piece of chocolate and some cold water before heading back out. We decided to explore more of the grounds of the GF on our walk back to the Poly.

So beautiful…….

I've always wanted to see the GF Wedding Pavilion so we strolled in that direction.
My daughter and I love the movie Father of the Bride, so it was fun to see Franck's Studio.

What a beautiful spot for a wedding……

We enjoyed a leisurely stroll along the beach on the way back to the Poly.

Don't we look relaxed?

We filled our mugs at Captain Cooks and made a short stop back at our room. We wanted to head back to Epcot to do some shopping at Mouse Gears, explore more of World Showcase and watch Illuminations.

Having learned from our earlier mistake, we began walking to the TTC to catch the monorail back to Epcot. While we were walking Tina and I talked about the race. I told her that while we were running through World Showcase I got really emotional and choked up. I told her I didn't mention it to her at the time because I didn't want to make her sad. She said that she had gotten choked up at one point, too and asked me where in the race I had felt that way. I started tearing up and I told her that it was right after we stopped for the pictures when the sun was rising. I was thinking about how beautiful it was and that I was so happy we were doing this and how lucky we were to have had each other during this horrible year and I was proud of myself for running so much and I was hoping that our dad could see us and that he was proud of us and happy for us, too. (In case you are wondering I am sitting here crying as I type this ). Tina said,"That's exactly when I got choked up, too!" Amazing sister moment :)!!
We made it to the TTC and very soon we were greeted by this beautiful sight.

We stopped for a night time Memory Maker photo

Then headed to Mouse Gears for some serious shopping! We picked out some Mickey socks for our mom, a cup and a Minnie antenna topper for my daughter who is turning 16 in just a few weeks, a Mickey antennae topper for my son and Tina found this for my husband

His favorite character is Goofy and he loves Star Wars so I thought it was perfect!
I bought this little beauty for myself

My first Disney Dooney & Bourke!!!! I had been looking at this purse on every Disney trip and could never let myself spend that much money on a purse. But this time I had Disney Gift Cards to spend! My brother in law and sister in law gave me Disney gift cards for Christmas and my birthday for the last two years so I felt no guilt at all when I made this purchase!!!
Tina did some shopping for her family and then we headed to World Showcase. By now we were starving so we wanted to eat. Tina said Chinese sounded really good. I didn't really have a meal preference. I was all about getting a Macaron ice cream sandwich and a Grand Marnier slushie in France before Illuminations. So we headed to the counter service Chinese place, the Lotus Blossom Cafe. HUGE MISTAKE!!!!! I should have known better, because after we got our food I remembered all the terrible reviews it's gotten :banghead:. Worst food I have ever eaten. We only ate a few bites and tossed it.
We wandered through some shops and Tina bought a few Christmas ornaments in the German Christmas shop. Then it was getting close to time for Illuminations. We went to L'Artisan des Glaces because I had been dying to try a Macaron Ice Cream Sandwich. My daughter and I currently obsessed with macaroons.

Tina and I each got one and then we headed to Les Vins des Chefs de France to get some champagne for Tina and a Grand Marnier slushie for me.

We both loved our Macaron Ice Cream Sandwiches and the Grand Marnier slushie was as good as I'd hoped :hungry:.
Originally we had planned to drink around the world today. Obviously that didn't happen, but we were okay with it. We enjoyed the adult beverages that we did have and had an incredible day.

Because the crowds seemed relatively low I was thinking that we'd be able to grab a last minute spot to watch Illuminations. Well, maybe in another part of Epcot but not where we were! We found a spot on the bridge with only one row of people in front of us. It wasn't a great vantage point but it was okay. Part way through Tina said she'd seen enough and was fine watching while we walked to the front of the park to catch the monorail. My energy was fading as well (we'd been up since 3:15am after all) so I agreed.
We boarded the monorail and rode back to the Poly. Because our Chinese dinner had been a bust, we were hungry. Tina's feet were done, so I took our mugs and walked over to Captain Cooks to get some drinks and flatbread pizzas. I was tired so I walked slowly and enjoyed the peaceful nighttime scenery. Captain Cooks took forever! I was thinking the flatbreads were smaller than they were so I got one for each of us. By the time they were ready and I got back to the room neither of us was very hungry anymore. We each only ate about half, so we could easily have shared one.
I forgot to mention that at some point on Thursday I had gone to the Grand Ceremonial House and they had fixed my MagicBand so that I was able to get into our room. I also had them add my credit card to my MagicBand so that my charges would be separate from Tina's. This will come into play later, so I wanted to mention it.
We had another busy day planned for Saturday, so we called it a night.
As I crawled into bed I checked my fitbit. Our step count for race day was 30,370 or 12.77 miles :jawdrop:!! We realized that we'd done a lot of back and forth that day but were still surprised with the grand total.

Up Next: We cheat on Disney and visit Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley

Thanks for reading! I've enjoyed your past reports. We loved running the 5K. I wholeheartedly recommend it whether you are a runner or not. We met many people who walked the races including the half. It is such a magical atmosphere. You and your sister would have a blast! You should definitely do it. I know what you mean about the spiked Dole Whips. I LOVE those things.

Your Dooney!!! It is beautiful. :geek::geek::geek: My best friend, who I usually travel to Disney with, just got back from a trip with her family and bought herself a huge Disney Dooney. I am thinking of maybe doing the same on my own trip!

The moment when you choked up has me all sorts of emotional! It's crazy the type of feelings Disney can evoke, and it was definitely a sign from your dad if your sister felt it too! Family bonds are irreplaceable, and he will live on through your memories and stories, and in little bits of yourself.

I loved your Biergarten pics too! I was wondering why your plate looked so empty, I hope the one you didn't get a picture of was much fuller... or maybe I am just a pig LOL! I never had the grapefruit beer, so this trip, it's a must do!

Thank you so much for sharing, now start playing the lottery. :p

If you plan another vacation to WDW, I'd recommend that you and your sister go on the Behind the Seeds tour in The Land. It is very interesting and pleasant. I've gone on it a few times. It lasts a little over an hour and it's very reasonably priced (under $20--where the heck else in WDW will you find a tour for under $20??!!).

Also, if you usually buy the Birnbaum's Walt Disney World 2016 book, there is also a coupon in the back of the book, that will give you a little discount off the price of the tour. (I've already cut out mine in anticipation of when I go to WDW this year!)

Wow! My daughter and I were in Corral E as well! Not sure how we missed each other in there - as the only bearded Anna (yes, in a running costume made by my wife and daughter) with my daughter Elsa, we met a LOT of people in Corral E. :) Then you had a great Brifraz-style afternoon. Living with the Land followed by Biergarten is pretty ideal to me! We spent our post-race at Rose and Crown. Check out my Trip Report (linked in my signature) and see if you are in any of my race pictures! Based on your shots, we were running pretty similar times.

The more I read your report, the more I think we could totally tour together ;-) Massages & macarons? Yes please!

Thank you for sharing the very sweet moment between you and your sister. It was so touching to read! Especially the fact that you both became emotional at the same moment....chills!
It's a real blessing that you two have one another to lift each other up <3

The veggie boat. So simple, yet a really fun experience. The Behind the seeds tour looks pretty cool. I hope you enjoy it.
The Dole Whip photo shoot was totally spur of the moment. I wanted to take a photo for my TR. It looked kind of boring when I just held up the Dole Whip so I looked around and saw Everest off in the distance. I stuck my Dole Whip in front of it and voila! I got so tickled by the idea I did the same thing by the Tree of Life.

Who knows, maybe our paths will one day cross at WDW! I'm glad that our sister moment touched a chord with you and others. It was definitely one of those moments we'll never forget. She is truly a blessing in my life. So fortunate to have her. Thanks for reading!

You should definitely buy yourself a Disney Dooney! I'm sure your friend will tell you the same thing. I love mine and am very happy I finally bought it. I've gotten tons of compliments on it. Even though I had the gift card I still stood there thinking about it for a very long time. I looked over all of the bags to be sure I chose the one that had the pictures I liked best in just the right spots. I can't believe I forgot to put this part in my TR! The CM working by the Dooneys asked me if I'd decided on a pattern. I told him that I had been looking at that particular pattern for years but had never bought it. He said that if I'd wanted it for that long I should definitely buy it. He helped me check it all out to be sure the over the shoulder handle was still in the bag and that the zipper worked, etc. We had a long conversation and the fact that I was a teacher came up. I didn't write it down, so I can't remember exactly, but I think his wife was also a teacher. While he was ringing up all my purchases he told me that he thought a lot of teachers and he was going to give me his discount on my purchases:happy:! You don't get moments like that anywhere but Disney!
Your comments about the moment where I got choked up brought tears to my eyes. Thank you. I love my Disney friends!!
I didn't realize that my plate actually made it into that picture! I actually had 3 or 4 plates of food so you are in fine company!! I really liked the grapefruit beer, but I just read another trip report where she didn't care for it at all.
You are welcome! Thanks for reading! I will absolutely be playing the lottery. If I can't be there with you gals maybe you can have a drink or a spiked Dole Whip or an ice cream for me!!

Your TR was great. Didn't see myself in any of your photos. It is so strange to think that we were in the same corral and probably similar spots along the course and never saw each other. I'd love to do the 5K again or try the 10K so we may run into one another yet!

Wizarding World of Harry Potter Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley

We woke up early on Saturday morning because we were heading to Universal to visit Harry Potter. We wanted to be there for park opening and we had to take a cab to get there. We got ready and headed down to Captain Cooks for a quick bite to eat. When we got there it was packed with all the runners who had just finished the Enchanted 10K! It was fun to see their costumes and check out their medals. We shared a breakfast burrito. It was tasty!

The crowds at Captain Cooks slowed us down a bit, but we caught a cab and soon we were arriving at Universal. I'd been to Wizarding World of Harry Potter Hogsmeade on previous trips, but hadn't yet been to Diagon Alley. Tina hadn't been to either park so we were excited to experience some new attractions together. We had two park, one day tickets and our plan was to focus on only the HP sections of each park. We wanted to be at the park when it opened because we wanted to take advantage of the shorter morning lines and needed to leave Universal by 4:30 in order to get back to the Poly to freshen up and change for our 7:00 ADR at ……You'll have to wait to see where!

When I was planning for our trip I used the Unofficial Guide to plan our day at Uni. The plan told us to start at IOA and ride Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey and then ride the Hogwart's Express to Diagon Alley, ride the Gringott's ride and experience other Diagon Alley attractions before heading back to Hogsmeade. Well, things didn't quite work out that way.

I had purchased our tickets at AAA before we left home. We arrived at IOA right at park opening. I went through the turnstiles first and Tina was behind me. The cast member was scanning her ticket and it wasn't giving Tina the green light (or whatever Uni uses) to go through. We were getting really annoyed because they kept scanning and scanning and that wasn't working. They finally made Tina show her ID and had her sign her ticket. They said that she might need to again show her ID when we went over to Universal Studios. No clue why there was an issue, but this reminded us why we rarely leave Disney property!
We walked through Seuss Land and Tina got her first glimpse of Hogsmeade.

Hogsmeade Train Station

Knowing from past experience that Universal doesn't allow bags, etc. on the rides we joined the line for the lockers. If Uni doesn't want you to take things on rides they need to seriously reexamine their locker situation. Traffic flow in and out of the lockers in Hogsmeade is terrible . With that hurdle out of the way, we headed for Hogwarts.

We joined the queue and the line moved quickly. I love all the details of the castle, but I wish they would adjust the queue so that you spent more of your wait time in the actual castle and not the greenhouse. It seems like we always spend a lot of time standing and waiting in the greenhouse and then when you enter the castle where you really want to linger and take in all the details you are flying through the queue. It just doesn't make sense to me. I know you can take a walking tour of the castle, but we never have time to do that, so I always end up plastering myself up against the railing and allowing others to pass me while I look at all the finer details.
As we approached the ride loading area I noticed the sign warning you that the ride might induce motion sickness. I am prone to motion sickness, especially on rides that spin and I thought to myself that this ride doesn't usually bother me. Then I remembered that that was probably due to the fact that I always take Dramamine before a day in any park. It was then that I realized I hadn't taken my Dramamine that morning :banghead:. I came down with a sinus infection right before we left for Disney so I was on several prescription medications during our trip. I had to spread out the medications so I had some time in between and I forgot the Dramamine. I decided that it was mind over matter and I wasn't going to let the ride bother me. Well, I enjoyed the ride as much as I always do, but by the time the ride was over I was not feeling very well. I took some deep breaths of cool fresh air and started to feel a bit better. There was no line for Dragon Challenge so we decided we'd jump in line for that before we headed to the Hogwarts Express because the Lines app was still showing very short wait times for the Hogwarts Express and the Gringott's ride.

I was fine until the very last upside down loop of the ride. My mistake was thinking the ride was over when it really still had that last loop. When we exited the ride I REALLY did not feel well at all :depressed:. I bought a bottle of Gilly Water and tried to pull myself together. We retrieved our things from the locker and I swallowed two Dramamine hoping that it would calm my stomach.
Tina decided that it was time for her first taste of Butterbeer. I documented the occasion with a photo.

Since I still felt queasy we decided to delay our trip on the Hogwarts Express. We visited Ollivander's, the gift shop at the end of the Hogwarts ride, and Honeydukes.

My stomach was calming and we thought that a bite to eat might be a good idea. The Three Broomsticks had a very short line so we decided to eat there and then head over to Diagon Alley.

My family ate at the Three Broomsticks in 2014 and I didn't really enjoy the fish and chips so we decided to share the Cornish Pasties with Garden Salad. We did not like this at all! So it turned out that we shared a tiny side salad and each had one Cornish Pasty which wasn't very much.

Then we headed to the Hogwarts Express. I think we had an issue with Tina's ticket and had to show her ID and all that. The Lines app suddenly showed a much longer wait time for the Hogwarts Express. We waited for at least 30 minutes. We were finally ready to board the Hogwarts Express and the cast member approaches us and says, "I'm really sorry but the video just stopped working in the car you are supposed to ride in, so you are going to have to wait for the next train."! By now we are getting worried about being able to ride the Gringott's ride. Another cast member came over and told us that he was very sorry for our wait and could he make things better by getting us on another ride faster? Um, yes please! Of course we said that we wanted to go on the Gringott's ride. He left for a few moments and as the Hogwarts Express pulled back into the station he told us to board the train and he'd come to brief us on what to do next.

Love your bag! I look but can't justify the cost yet either.
