Trip Report COMPLETED (finally!)....Did we move to WDW? Nope just a two week trip!

Hello WDW Magic friends and welcome to my trip report. I have done a few trip reports in the past of both WDW and Disneyland. My most recent report was a Spring Break trip to WDW. So if you've read one of my reports before....welcome back friends! If you haven't read one before....welcome new friend!

A little background information

People going: Me (Amy) and my husband (Brad), you'll see enough of our pictures later.

"People" we are leaving behind to go on our trip: Our miniature schnauzer Kapono, she keeps trying to come with us though. She stays with my sister and her family and Kapono has some fur cousins to play with there and is well taken care of which is a relief for me and Brad too I guess.

Our travel days July 4 -July 19. The days actually spent in WDW would be the 5th-19th. We live in Wisconsin but very close to Minneapolis/St. Paul so we fly from there. It wouldn't be a bad drive to the airport in the morning, but I like to stay near the airport the night before departure.

Since we were going to be in WDW for so long we got a lot of comments from friends joking with us that we must be moving in, hence the title of the report here.

Our Resort: All Star Movies. We don't spend much time in the room so all we need is a clean place to sleep, shower, and store our stuff. We really aren't pool people, although we do use the pool, but if we built in a lot of pool time we would stay at the Beach Club again! Side note: The first time we ever tried to stay at the Movies we were upgraded upon check in to the Beach Club! We didn't ask for it, the magic just happened, it was the best deluxe accommodations for All Star prices! So now whenever we stay at the Movies we keep our fingers crossed on check in day!

Okay so let's start shall we....

On July 4th we spent most of the day with my sister and her family and left Kapono at her "vacation home" for the next two weeks. We drove up to the Minneapolis airport area by the Mall of America, and made a quick stop at Sam's Club for one more discount Disney gift card. The Sam's Club was closing, actually it was 10 minutes before their posted close time and the lady at the door didn't want to let us in. We literally had to go over to a stand near the register and get a gift card, she even called her manager who said it was okay to let us in. We departed the store 3 minutes before for the posted close time! Take that lady! Anyway, it was dinner time but neither of us wanted to sit in a restaurant we just wanted to relax in the hotel room for the night. So there was a sub place and a Lee Ann Chin (Minnesota based Chinese take out chain), and Chinese won out. So we got our take out and checked into the hotel for the night and ate our take out, and watched a Capital Fourth on PBS. Which was fantastic this year with John Stamos as the host. :inlove:

Us with our Chinese take out!

IMG_3252.JPG

Our flight left early, but we are early birds so despite being 5 minutes away from the terminal we got there early. Plus we were too excited to sleep! Funny thing, we flipped on the tv while we were getting ready and the Steve Harvey show was on and it was one of the Epcot episodes from earlier in the year that he was recording when we were there in March. We don't normally watch that show and we didn't go to the recording but we saw it being on as a good sign that the Disney gods were with us!
IMG_6519.JPG

We arrived in Orlando after an uneventful flight. We enjoyed some movies and tried to nap but again we were just too excited to sleep!
IMG_3255.JPG

Magical Express load went quick and soon we were HOME!
IMG_6521.JPG

And despite doing online check in and requesting early arrival our room wasn't ready. But that was fine, we had to stop at the front desk any way. I had lots of gift cards in my purse that we wanted to put on our account, we wanted to decline Mousekeeping, and make sure our room had a good position for the 2 weeks. Now we did decline Mousekeeping but we did have our room serviced twice while we were there. We are fairly neat, and I'm always tidying up the room anyway even with Mousekeeping so we figured we could survive without having it every day. Plus with the extra money we would be able to enjoy a good meal or some good drinks at Trader Sam's. So with all that squared away we put our carry ons with bell services and headed to the bus stop with a quick gander at the gift shop.

Is that new? I remember reading somewhere that it was an all or nothing deal.

We have accepted the offer twice, this time and in March, and both times they told us we could request a full clean whenever, and $10 would added to the bill.

I really love the parks after dark, it's like getting a whole new park

Night time in the parks is magical.

July 11 Continued:

Hubs and I decided to do a lounge crawl at Disney Springs. We started with the Hideaway at Maria and Enzo', well at least we started there after we checked into the Aerophile and yep it wasn't running. We hadn't been in the Hideaway area and we liked the tunnel/prohibition vibe it had. We weren't creative in our drink. I had some sort of Italian beer and he had a rum and coke.

Inside the Hideaway.

Next stop the Edison. We sat at one of the lower level bars.
IMG_7554.JPG

The restaurant/bar has a cool vibe and our bartender was fun to chat with.
IMG_4002.JPG

The cocktail list.
IMG_4004.JPG

Hub's cocktail. (I think it was the Ti punch listed from up above, I could be wrong though.)
IMG_3088.JPG

My drink. The Circuit-q-cumber. I did not like this at first, it had a smoky flavor that was strong but it grew on me. I probably wouldn't get it again though.
IMG_4003.JPG

And we got some food. The clothesline bacon and deviled eggs. The bacon was mostly for Brad, I negotiated for a piece, I said he could have the meat from my deviled egg plate. He hated deviled eggs so that was all I could trade for.

The 3rd stop on our Disney Springs lounge tour was Jock Linsdey's Hanger Bar. We are both Indiana Jones fans so we like the movie references around the restaurant/bar.

Hubs got a Manhattan.

A look at my Singapore Sling and his Manhattan. I'd never had a Singapore Sling before, I'm not much into gin but this was tasty. I couldn't taste the gin.
IMG_7562.JPG

We ordered the queso fundido, and it was okay. It wasn't like fundido we had eaten before, it was basically just chips and cheese dip.

And a creepy painting of Jock by the bar near the bathrooms.

More of the July 11 lounge tour:

Be the time we had finished at Jock's we needed to take a break from the booze. We aren't heavy drinkers so 3 drinks were kind of hitting us. So we did some shopping at Uniqlo, World of Disney (not sure I like the new design, it seems bland), and Basin (I "needed" some new bath bombs).

A cool shirt I thought about purchasing, I did not purchase it though.

Our last place was to be the Boathouse. We had agreed to go here after dark so we could sit outside and enjoy the atmosphere by the water. However when we got here someone, not me, didn't want to sit outside anymore. Someone wanted air conditioning. I decided not to fight it because someone can it irritable and pouty when he is too hot. So at the bar we sat.

We sat near the guy that was shucking the oysters, which I noticed after we sat down. I thought it would be smelly and gross to watch. Especially since I do not like seafood. It didn't smell, which leads me to think the oysters were fresh and high quality, and it was interesting to see him shuck so many so fast. I should have taken a picture of it but I did not.

GREAT TR so far! So much to comment on -- especially the food photos, etc.! Yum!! :hungry: :hungry:

Love the TSL photos at night. Haven't seen too many of those yet on the forums--it's a whole different "look" in the evening--I like it. (I like the daytime pictures, too.) :)

Would love to have lunch with an imagineer--I can't believe how lucky you two were to actually be able to meet an imagineer for TSL and Pandora. Talk about timely?! :jawdrop: (As for the guy across from you with the flying feet . . . OMG . . . what is wrong with people??!! :banghead: ) And also the few "know it alls" -- I guess that's somewhat to be expected for that particular dining experience. It's really obnoxious though if they attempt to monopolize the conversation, when there are CLEARLY others PRESENT who may also have good questions and comments to add.

Lastly, I've seen pictures of the plate before, and those are quite a keepsake. I'm curious as to why they didn't offer it this time--hope they didn't completely eliminate that nice gift for the guests.

Thank! I enjoyed seeing TSL at night too, actually Alien Swirling Saucers was more fun to ride at night because of the lighting. It was like a Toy Story disco!

I don't know why they stopped the plate but I read a review by someone else saying they didn't get the plate either. Oh well, I guess I don't know where I would have put one had I gotten it anyway. I'm just glad I didn't get the same Imagineer as before. Our Imagineer told us he was actually a fill in for the day, the guy that was supposed to be there worked in the same department and the same recent projects but was slightly more senior but he had to go to Glendale so he asked Matt to fill in. Had he been there the kicking guy and his family would have had a repeat Imagineer!

More of Day 5:

We hadn't watched the Indiana Jones show in awhile so we decided to take it in, we also got a seat under a big fan so we were very comfortable while watching.

Then we headed out of the park and to Disney Springs via Saratoga Springs. We checked out the Aerophile again hoping to use that voucher, but nope it was down. So we continued on to our lunch destination of Maria and Enzo's.
View attachment 305244

As you can see the place wasn't very busy. We liked the design of the decor and the food was good too.

The view from our table.
View attachment 305245

The restaurant offered a lunch menu that offered a starter and an entree and we both went with that.

We started with bread and I had a drink off the non-alcoholic menu. It was a Sicilian something, it tasted fantastic.
View attachment 305252

We both got the ceasar salad.
View attachment 305248

B got the pizza, it was very good, he let me have a taste. In the picture the crust looks dry but it was very crisp on the outside but soft on the inside. The pepperoni was very good quality and had a nice flavor.
View attachment 305249

I had the chicken parm, and I enjoyed it.
View attachment 305250

We both enjoyed our meal here a lot. It was a little disappointed in a way that it wasn't busier, hopefully it was just the day or maybe that it was lunch because the food was good.
Ohhh, that restaurant seems really nice!

How are the prices?

And more day 5:

We didn't have dessert at Maria and Enzo's, we decided to try Il Vivo Gelato. We got peanut butter and chocolate hazelnut, it was fine gelato. Then I might have gotten a lot of coffee beans to bring home at Joffrey's, let's just say they threw in a Tervis mug because I bought so much.
View attachment 305262

Then we headed to our resort for nap before heading back to the Magic Kingdom for the evening.
We had a visit to the Country Bears.
View attachment 305266

And then we walked out to a street party.
View attachment 305267

Then we watched the Muppets, hilarious!
View attachment 305268

Then we had the WORST Jungle Cruise skipper ever, seriously! His name was Jermaine, if he is ever your skipper get out of the boat! Not joking! He acted bored the whole time and told very few jokes. In fact he barely spoke, by the time we hit the African veldt he hardly said anything more after that. He almost missed the backside of water, he said something out it when we were 3/4's past it and when we got to the hippo pool he said, "this is the hippo pool." Nothing about Trader Sam at all. WORST Cruise ever! And I've even had a skipper earning her ears that was better.
View attachment 305269

Then we decided to get a snack/supper and camp out in a good spot for Happily Ever After, it was about an hour and 10 minutes before the show.

Of course we had someone come up with her family about 10 minutes before showtime who got mad at all of us sitting by the fenceline. Something about how we shouldn't be sitting there and she needed a spot. I ignore her and actually tried to spread out more. Of course she wedged her and her family in between us and the people next to us. I didn't give up one inch but the family next to us did, very disappointing. The woman's kid kept nudging me but he was already at the rail what more did he want. I also think the family thought there was a stage show too because the kid kept asking when the people were coming out on stage. No one answered him so I finally did, and maybe I scared him by talking to him because he stopped nudging.

Unfortunately, there are always these kind of people who refuse to be kind and try to shove everyone out of their way. Sorry that happened to you.

How are the prices?

The prices aren't too out of line with Disney restaurants. The prix fixe we did was $21. They also have a Sunday brunch that I heard is really good and the Hideout bar does a Italian family style supper where you are encourage to bring your own wine with no corking fee.

Yeah, people can be jerks. It is pretty much a guarantee when camping out to see fireworks in the popular hub. Thanks though.

That steak def looks delicious!

The bread too!

Also I'm surprised that they have characters in these value hotels.

I know you love the California Grill but next time you visit you'll have to try the Yachtsman, it is fabulous!

Day 8: July 12

The day Brad and I go our separate days. We have started to have at least one day (or at least a large portion of the day) apart from each other on longer trips, because let's face it spending 24 hours a day for a week or more with one person can lead to a little bit of friction. We hardly ever fight but we noticed when we were on vacation about halfway through a trip there would be a tiff, it wouldn't last long but it still happened. So we started putting a little break into trips, now there isn't a tiff. And since he likes to golf and I do not he still gets to do something he likes.

Let's start with Brad's day. He went golfing. He went to Lake Buena Vista. Apparently there is some sort of construction on the course so he got some sort of discounted rate. He golfed 18 holes and had some different partners for each of the 9 holes. He enjoyed golfing with all the people he was teamed up with. He got teamed up with some Belgians for the last 9 and the next time he went golfing a few days later he ran into them again. He said they were really fun people.

He did not take many pictures but this is what he took.

So while Brad went golfing I had to get ready for my tour. Today I was taking the Backstage Magic Tour. It was something I have wanted to do for quite a few years now but the price always scared me away. This year I bit the bullet and I'm so glad I did it was FABULOUS!!! And I wouldn't hesitate to go on it again!

But first I had some time before my tour and since Brad had to get going early I was up so I decided to actually eat breakfast in the Movies food court. Of course it was Mickey waffles but it was a nice change. So I took a few pictures on the way there.

IMG_7582.JPG

IMG_7587.JPG

The tour met at Epcot at 9 am and today Epcot had extra magic hours. So the plan was to get to Epcot around 8 am, ride Spaceship Earth and then go to the tour meeting spot. So at about 7:40 am I got in line for the Epcot bus, and the bus wait time board said buses every 20 minutes (not helpful), but it was Extra Magic Hours so I was sure a bus would be along shortly. Well, at 8:17am a bus finally showed up. Can someone tell me why Disney Springs needed 4 buses that morning! I should have bailed earlier and gotten an Uber or something but with early hours a bus should have been showing up soon. So at 8:22 we were finally on our way. I was getting nervous, I like being places early, my husband is the same way, we joke that if we aren't at least 20 minutes early we are late! A few weeks prior to this trip I had taken a Florida trip with a college friend and that is the only thing that irritated me is she was always late and slow when getting ready, like I told her I wanted to be at Trader Sam's by 4pm, and well over an hour later we arrived. :( Anyway back to present time, so now I was envisioning everything that could go wrong an keep me from my tour, it was not a fun bus ride.

Luckily we didn't get stuck in traffic or anything and we arrived at Epcot. I made a quick stop at the restroom before heading to security which I was concerned about being backed up but I spent less than a minute in line for. Also on the walk to security I passed the meeting point for the tour and only one couple was waiting. So I breathed a sigh of relief and I could finally relax now. Shortly after I arrived at the meeting spot our guides for the day showed up.

Oh upon entering Epcot I took this picture of the Guardians construction, it is HUGE!
IMG_7590.JPG

IMG_7591.JPG

Our main guides were Mindy and Peter. The guy with the hat just helped check people in.
IMG_4014.JPG

We got our badges.
IMG_7593.JPG

We weren't allowed to take pictures in backstage areas so Peter was our photographer at certain points. Even though this wasn't a backstage area we had starting tour shots.
IMG_4219.JPG

IMG_4220.JPG

I will give a little schedule of our tour, but I won't give away any major secrets. We started out going backstage to our tour bus. On the bus water and snacks were available for us anytime we wanted. The snack was a package of gluten and allergy free chocolate chip cookies. And they were actually tasty. The bus took us around the access road to the American Adventure. There we were taken behind the scenes to see how the show is run. It was nice to see the old computer system that still runs the show, the scenes move (they were doing a test run while we were there), and to see some of the scenes up close. After that we got back on the bus and continued our journey on the backstage road and our next major stop was Costuming.

Oh my goodness!!!! This was so great. We got to see people working on designs and the sewing areas. There were also displays of old costumes, including ones from the Great Movie Ride. There was a wall of notions and scraps of different materials used in the costumes for the cat members. We learned a lot of tid bits about the designs and some of the particular costumes. Mindy told us about the design process and outcome of the costumes for the Rivers of Light show, which when I saw it a few days later made me appreciate it more. We were also allowed to hold some current and past costumes. Some of those costumes, like the Storybook Circus Minnie dress and the shell hula skirt of the Luau dancers are extremely heavy! It was just amazing to see all the art that goes into the costumes of cast members. There was so much to see, and if I had any good sewing talent I would want to work here! There was also so much I wanted to take pictures of but I'm a rule follower so I didn't. Although Peter did take our picture here.

Continuing July 12: My Backstage Magic Tour!

Our next stop was one of the laundry facilities. I wasn't expecting much, but it was actually really neat to see how it is run and to see the laundry bins on large overhead conveyors reminded me of the door scene from Monster's Inc. There are 4 facilities and we went to the one that does the laundry for the deluxe resorts but the other facilities are run similarly. It also was really hot in the building but our guide told us that the laundry facility has the highest cast member satisfaction rate on property.

Another picture spot.
IMG_4222.JPG

After laundry we went to our lunch stop of Whispering Canyon Cafe at Wilderness Lodge. It was a nice meal and my tablemates were pleasant to talk to.
IMG_4021.JPG

IMG_4020.JPG

After lunch was the stop I was looking forward to the most, central shops! It is here testing, fixing, painting, building of some attraction things for the parks goes on. Again, there was so much I wanted to take pictures of but couldn't. It is strange but I just got so excited to see a Doombuggy, a Teacup, and a Spaceship Earth ride vehicle all next to each other. I think they took us through when most people were on breaks or they were told to take a break when the tour came through because we didn't see anyone actually working on anything here. When we did see some people on the floor in one of the shops they were just sitting around and on their phones. I guess I can understand that. We did get to see an elephant from the Jungle Cruise from the Africa scene being refurbed and most of the "skin" had been stripped away.

I had hoped we would actually go into the Animatronic Shop but we didn't we did see two displays outside the shop. Mindy asked a question about Animatronics and no one knew the answer, I knew it though. I waited though to answer because I didn't want to be the know-it-all on the tour but when no one answered I piped up and I was right and given the reward of pressing the button to operate the tiki bird (seen in the top part of the picture below). But the big display was the polar bear from the Maelstrom! I was super excited to see that and get my picture take with it. I was pretty bummed when I saw my picture later and saw that Peter had taken a blurry picture. But it is still fun to have the picture.
IMG_4223.JPG

So after the excitement of Central Shops we headed to our last stop of the Utilidoors under the Magic Kingdom. On the way we passed the land clearing for Tron, since we were on a road that anyone can travel on I figured I could take some pictures. It was just land clearing so not really too exciting.

Here was the roundhouse for the trains.
IMG_4028.JPG

Tron land clearing
IMG_4030.JPG

IMG_4031.JPG

IMG_4032.JPG

Once in the Magic Kingdom we entered on onstage for a comfort break. Picture time!
IMG_4034.JPG

My sneaky picture of onstage and off stage at the same time. This was by the "backstage" area that is used by the Plaza area during crowded periods or as entrances to the holiday parties. So we did go down into the utilidoor area under Main Street. We walked the whole Main Street area. I had been in the utilidoor area before on the Keys to the Kingdom tour and I didn't really learn anything knew here. But it was neat to see it again and for longer than the Keys tour had been. I kept on alert for the Dapper Dans, I think it would have been cool to run into them down there. I didn't see them but we did see the marching band members.
IMG_4038.JPG

After the utilidoors we boarded the bus and headed back to Epcot. There was a little more information on the way back but the tour was basically done. Back at Epcot the guides gave us our pin and code to get pictures and encouraged us to take as many cookies and waters as we wanted. So I stocked up.

More of July 12th

The plan was to meet Brad at Epcot for dinner at 6pm but it was around 3-3:30 and the drop off was near the All Star bus and I saw one pulling up. So I headed back to the room, plus I had a few waters I didn't want to carry around until 6pm and I thought a nap would be nice. Before I got to the room I ran into a cool character hanging out by my building! The character handler noticed my Backstage Magic badge and was asking me a lot of questions about the tour.

When I got back to the room Brad was back from golfing, and had also done our laundry and had eaten lunch at the food court. When he came back from lunch he found housekeeping doing a full clean of our room. That was a surprise since we had declined housekeeping, it was fine though. We had planned on requesting full service the next day so it was just a day early. I suppose we should have complained that we hadn't requested it but it wasn't a big deal. However I wouldn't have made my bed that morning had I known! ;):)

Anyway, once I was back in my room hubs and I exchanged some greetings but agreed not to share our time apart until dinner. So we kept our day mum until we sat down for dinner. We took a short nap, well he slept and I was still so pumped from my tour I just rested my eyes and listened to the music on the nap channel (resort information tv channel) until it was time to get up and head to Epcot.

Unlike earlier in the day the bus to Epcot showed up quickly and we were on our way. Since I had my cool Epcot symbol shirt on I wanted a special picture in Future World.
IMG_4056.JPG

Then we both felt a bit lazy and it looked like it might rain so we got a Friendship to Morocco for a quick walk to France and dinner at Chefs de France.

Your tour really sounded like fun! (I've always heard great reviews of that one in MK.) I would have loved to see the costume area with the CMs working on the clothing. That must have been great to see all the different colors and designs of fabrics, sparkles, beads. etc. The rest of the tour sounded wonderful as well.

Plus, you wore my favorite t-shirt with the EPCOT icons (even if the tour was at MK, an EPCOT t-shirt is always proper, and in good taste!) ;)

Glad that Brad had a good time on the golf course, too. It's fine to have a day or so with each person doing something different--makes the trip more interesting--more experiences to share! :)
