I voted to ban it completely because I am sensitive to the smoke. My grandparents smoked all the time when I was a kid and that smell that gets in your clothes is horrible. I can't stand when at a stop light, the person in the car in front of me is smoking, I roll up the windows and close the outside vent until traffic gets going again.

In Delaware, they banned smoking in restaurants, bars, race tracks and slot parlors. It is a blessing not to have to settle for "First Available" seating.

I think about people craving a smoke all day and while I don't want to be the brunt of their frustrations, I have to worry about myself and whether or not I should have to be subject to smoke.

The issue seems to be rule enforcement. Maybe, they could arm CMs with water pistols to "douse" the cigarette and its smoker for noncompliance with smoking in designated areas. :animwink:

As a non-smoker from upstate NY I'm happy with the smoking bans to a dgree. But I also can sympathize with a smoker having cravings so I would rather have designated smoking areas as long as this is enforced. Unfortunatly in the area where I live many guys have replaced their smoking habit with smokeless tobacco so they can get their nicotine fix anywhere, anytime. This means everyone gets the pleasure of seeing and maybe stepping in their spit and tobacco. One of my favorite things is finding a cup or bottle with their spit on a bench in the mall or anywhere they feel like. I'm not :hammer: sure which is worse, cigarette butts all over or that. Sorry to rant on and on, I guess it's just one of my pet peeves. :hammer:

smoking is what put my dad in the hospital 11 times in one year with pneumonia. i hate being around smokers and i think that the designated areas are too close to others. they should be moved farther out where the second hand smoke doesn't hit you in the face when you walk by. for the record, my dad doesn't smoke but second hand smoke has ruined his lungs and now he really has to watch where he goes. he's only 40 years old and almost died because his lungs were so infected from the cigarette smoke. 3 doctors that he saw all told him that it is cigarettes and one even thought he smoked himself. his first doctor told him his wife used to smoke and when she did, he would always get pneumonia. since she quit, he hasn't gotten it once. i do not smoke and don't intend to. its nasty and the smell of a cigarette makes me want to :hurl: i don't think it is right for those to get special treatment while they are killing those around them

if someone blows smoke in my face or is in an area smoking where they should not be, i speak up and go off on them. by the time i'm done with them, they move. you definately don't want to blow smoke in my face because you are gonna get more than just an earful. i'll still go off on people even if i'm in disney. i should not have to stand there and let somebody slowly kill me. say all you want about me i'm just stating my opinion

I voted to completely ban it. After all, they don't sell them anywhere on property, why allow them to smoke them anywhere on property? Even though they have the designated areas, those who are smoking are still getting second AND first hand smoke, decreasing their life span even more. I hvae no sympothy for those who smoke and get lung cancer. I know, that's harsh and I'm going to get shot for saying it but it's true. I'm also going to agree that those who feel they are superior to everyone else and can break the rules by smoking whenever and wherever they choose really tick me off. I'm escaping the "real world" and being in the most magical place, I don't want it ruined by smoke. DCA and DL don't allow smoking in public places because smoking isn't allowed anywhere in CA in public. If they can do it there, they can do it at WDW too. (At least last I knew it was still illegal to smoke in public places in CA.)
scott,
they sell cigarettes at every resort, cigars also, they just don't sell them at the parks. I am a smoker and respect the rules and have no problem telling a smoker who is NOT following the rules where to go. :)
Smoking outside poses no second hand smoke problems to most of us.
Keeping away from the outside smoke lessens your chances of any problems by about 100%. I will respect your right NOT to smell my smoke if you respect my right to smoke in the designated areas.
You are citing rules from one of the MOST polluted areas on the planet. Smoking, btw, is allowed in CA outside just about anywhere. Be happy that WDW has designated areas and most people do care and follow the rules. we always notice the ones that break the rules, but rarely the ones that follow them.

Amen!! This seems to be increasing and the CM's tend to ignore it. Not only do I hate being exposed to smoke clouds, this also dirties the parks because cig butts are in the landscaping(yuck!!) If smokers stay in the designated areas and dispose of their butts in ashtrays I have no problem what so ever.
If you are a non smoker, I believe you will notice the butts, I am a smoker, I take care of the butts, and also notice the amazing sloppiness of the guests who toss trash anywhere. My gripe, gum tossed on the pavement.

The state of New York banned smoking in any place where a person is employed one year and 5 day sago, and since then, hospital visits have declined, underage smoking has declined, and restaurant revenue has actually increased, so ban smoking all over the resort, except in designated guestrooms!
You are, of course, aware that any restaurant or bar can get an exemption if they prove that their sales have decreaded by 15%. Oh, the dreaded bottom line, are we talking health or revenue here. Don't mess with the lottery either, many bar owners STOPPED selling lottery tickets in protest of the government interferring with a private company and have received many exemptions to allow smoking as long as they sell lottery tickets. Ah, I love it when the government puts money ahead of supposed health benefits.

Funny you should say that, Walt smoked all his life. I believe it fits rather well, within the guidelines.

One, it is terribly rude to blow smoke in anyone's face at anytime. Two, it is terribly rude to go off on someone, ask them to move first. :) I doubt your health will be compromised by a whiff here and there. You are in more danger of problems driving your car on a crowded highway.

Actually that ban pertains to public buildings that serve food. So it's not really all public buildings, but just places that serve food.
And, malls, movie theatres, public buildings, airports, government buildings, bars etc.

Here's the thing that no one seems to recall. If FL hadn't changed the smoking laws last July, we wouldn't be having this discussion about smoking areas or not. Up until last year, you could smoke anywhere you wanted...and could for years. I DO think the parks are a lot cleaner than before the smoking areas but, trash is still trash. Someone dropping a cigarette butt in the street is no different than someone dropping some other type of trash like a tissue, cup or wrapper of some kind (I think someone else mentioned this earlier). I've never quite understood why no one bothers to have this kind of heated arguement over drinking alcohol. While smoking doesn't seem to go with Disney's clean cut image, I can't see where serving alcohol is any different....yet no one argues about the damage drunk people can cause.

Just a thought. I wondered when another dreaded smoking poll/thread would be started.

I think it's the 2nd hand smoke that gets to people. People (like me) who have chosen to never smoke a cigarette their entire lives are stuck breathing in other people's nasty smoke everywhere we go. I can't even walk into Walmart without 10 people blowing smoke around the air my kids and I are breathing in.

Whereas if someone wants to drink, they are only hurting themselves. Doesn't bother me any, unless they start acting like idiots.

But that's the problem...suppose you and your family are walking down Main Street and someone who is a little "tipsy" falls onto or into your family causing possible injury to your family...right then and there? :lookaroun

I am an avid Anti-smoker but many of my friends and family do smoke. There should be designated smoking sections without question,at least until WAY more of the population quits. I can't help but laugh at how much society has changed in 20-25 years. I was on an older plane last week and there were built in ashtrays in the armrests and NO SMOKING light still came on and went off. I saw Anchorman and it reminded me how when I was a kid the news anchors would smoke ON THE AIR. Cigarettes were a normal part of everybodies everyday life and smoking was permitted EVERYWHERE...at work, in stores, on planes. We have come a long way to inconvienience the smokers, and kids are still doing it.SAD.

My problem is that the designated smoking areas are still in the mainstream or places I as a nonsmoker want to be. I like the little path up the side of the castle into Fantasyland, but because it is such a small area and one of the designated smoking areas, you can't use this shortcut without choking. Can we have designated smoking areas that are farther away from things? It's not like there is a shortage of space in these parks!

Or, unless, God Forbid, they involve you in a collision because they are drinking.
Personally, I would rather a puff of smoke (gross as it may be to you) then being killed or injured by some irresponsible fool.

We, the smokers, do pay the same admission to the parks. There are plenty of shortcuts to anywhere in any park, give a little, we have given a lot.

Yes, it is very sad that kids are still smoking. We have, indeed, come a long way to inconvienience the smoker and make them second class citizens who pay a huge amount of taxes to feed the government's coffers, pay for cigarette non smoking ads and to do everything but make us feel like the scum of the earth and yet, both sides want it their way and no balance can seem to be had. But, with all that, the kids are still smoking, that is the saddest of all.
Even more sad is the fact that kids are doing drugs and drinking. Far worse, IMHO, than smoking will ever be. Sad, sad state of affairs.
