Apparently it is broke. The options to make our current bills "counterfiet-proof" are running out, and the crooks are getting around them. The colored money is the next logical step. And as for the more "official" look as stated earlier. That's only according to what us Americans are used to, and some opinion.

If it stops more crime, good, bring on the rainbow.....

I don't see how coloring your money will help against counterfeiting. Our has been colored forever, and the crooks are still going...

There are securities that will be worked into the color of the money, so it's more than just putting color in, but what type of safeguards the colored ink will provide. I haven't seen the list yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if it has to do with color shifting ink technology, to defeat color copiers and scanners.

If you want real Monopoly style money, just look at the €uro notes - IMHO they're crap, but then again I'm anti €uro anyway.

There is one thing that no one mentioned, The reason that we are now starting to introduce colored notes now. the reason is US Currency is so highly valued around the world, US currencu is Unoffically the worlds currency, If you dont think so, then why did Sadam have Billions in US Currency in his valts ? The rest of the World Likes the fact that it is table because our efforts to keep it's Value true.Washington feared that the change would some how cause the rest of the world to fear the notes if the changes were too radical and are some of the points that have been brought up, and thinking about it like Monopoly Money, so the US treatury will gradually institute currence redesignes about every ten to 15 years with the latest advanced in frinting technology so after the finish this round of changes they will start planning for the next changes

FYI, I did some checking and from what I can find , The US is the last country to have multi-colored currency, all other countrys that print money use several colors on each denomination of note.

also...

food for thought. the treasury has bandyed about the discintinuation of the penny and the One Dollar bill. The One wasn't redesigned when the others were and there are no p[lans to do so this time, I am pretty shure the reason for the one still being printed is because of it's tradition and reconizability as US currency, even thougfht the one is the most expensive bill to produce based on it's average life of only 18 months compared to 3-5 years plus for the other denominations, the mint is trying to change opinion with the "Golden" dollar, but I like my ones,

The penny is another matter, there are two camps, first is the removal of the penn will facilitate adjusting prices to 5 cent increments, most will probably round up, so nothint would end in 49 or 99. then ther are the people of Illinois which is where I live, and since Illinois is the land of lincoln, we want to keep our penny
