College Program and Classes!

Alright. I'm looking into doing the college program in spring '10 (so a while off, haha) but I'm trying to figure out if I can manage my credits around it.

Has anyone done the CP and taken online courses? My college doesn't take direct credit, and asking about transfering credit from a college that does got me a lot of confused replies. The best option for me right now is to take probably around 6 or 7 credits (not quite sure on that, since I can only judge what classes I can take when for so far in the future) online.

Have you done this? Do you feel you have enough time to do so? Isn't there a rule where you HAVE to take a disney course anyways?

Also, I really want to get a job as a character attendant. Is there a reasonable chance I'll get it, or is there a huge demand for that?

My second choice is working attractions, I'd be hoping for a DAK attraction (I'm majoring in zoology and want to work at a zoo or theme park type thing for my job... probably in disney :zipit:). Does my preference have any weight in this?

Lots of questions, sorry, haha. :)

I took online classes while at Disney. I have to say it can be kind of difficult because Disney doesn't have to schedule around your online classes the way they do if you take one of their classes. So I wouldn't reccommend taking a full load of online classes. You'll be working a lot of hours plus you'll be wanting to enjoy yourself so it's pretty hard to balance all that.
I've known several people who mentioned in their interview their park preference and ended up getting it. Specifically I know two people who mentioned they were interested in animals and zoology and wanted to be at Ak and were put at AK. So I think there's definetly a good chance and it's worth asking.

My first CP I took one of the Disney classes. It was really interesting. I had enough time to do everything, as my hours were scheduled around the class. And no, you do not have to take any of the classes.

Character attendant is a fine choice. It is a lot of fun, and I love it.

But you do have time to do classes and all? I remember reading somewhere that as long as you were taking classes, they allowed time for you to work during off-peak season. I'd only be taking 6 during the spring, I believe, and then if I stay on for the summer, too, I'd only take a 3-4 credit class, which I think is all fairly manageable, since I'm a pretty good learner on my own.

The AK thing is so exciting :) I would die if I got to do the Kilimanjaro safaris or even the Jungle Trek. Bahhh I'm just excited. :p

Unless it's a Disney class, they don't schedule around the fact that you're taking classes. You should be getting two days off a week most of the time and then one day off it's super busy and your department is short on CMs. For me two days off a week was a enough to do my classes but then again I'm a total slacker who would just open up my book and read the chapters the day the test was due. You should definetly take an internet class or two before you go to Disney, that way you know what all is involved in them and you'll know what you have to do to make time for them or how much time you need to complete them.

Sounds like me, haha. I will look into trying an online course, but I don't know if I can find one to take until then (zoology isn't the most popular of majors, so most of the classes are only offered in person). I'm sure I can manage. two courses shouldn't be that much work, especially since they won't be real advanced courses, just electives to bulk up my total credit count for graduation.

I know ucf offered a few online zoology courses this semester that could just transfer over to your school.

last semester i did the cp and took 2 classes online through a community college, then had them transfered to my college. also, i would recommend the class 'marketing you' for sure. it teaches you SO MUCH about resume writing, interviews, etc....it was extremely helpful and ive been using my notes from the class this semester a lot!

I've heard marketing you is good but you can basically find out all the resume writing stuff at some one time classes they offer at DU and at the end of the program.

In preperation of going on the program I would recomend you take heavier course loads now. I didn't before my program and am taking 18 hours this and next semesters, 2 classes this summer, and at least 14 hours my last semster here. I took two classes there that I got independent study credit for.

ya i would definitely say take summer classes if you can before and after....i still have to graduate a semester late because i am behind. but ya, u can get all of the info from marketing you in one class, but the main benefit of the class is that it looks amazing on resumes....employers consider it a way of increasing your skills and knowledge that isnt through school...ya know? it really helped me with my last job interview and is insanely easy

Yeah, I'm already starting to take on more classes. If I take 3 or 4 (3 or 4 credit each) online classes for the duration of the CP, I'm golden with credit requirements. Thankfully, I ended up having to take a bunch of just elective classes to bulk up my total credit count, while getting the rest of my requirements taken care of in the meantime. It looks like the most amount of credits I have to take at one time will be 17, which really isn't that bad.
