I didn't see a thread on this in a quick search, so I hope this hasn't been covered. I looked, but I fully admit to being blind as a bat sometimes. ;)

CNN posted an article yesterday about why some people love Disney and some hate it. http://www.cnn.com/2013/03/22/travel/disney-travel-debate/index.html?hpt=hp_t5

The article talks a lot about why some people hate Disney and won't ever take their children to the parks. I have run across some of these people. Personally I always find them extreme and ridiculous. I wanted to put the article up here for discussion to see what you guys think about it and see if you pull any points out of it I missed.

Extreme and ridiculous plus close-minded and self-centered and ignorant are all words that came to mind when reading the article.

Bitter people. These people are probably the same people that tell their 3 year old child that Santa clause and the tooth fairy aren't real.

It makes people happy, I don't understand the complaints about it being a big commercial machine or how it's too out of touch with the real world. Lord knows we already have enough darkness in this world, Disney is a temporary escape from that. (just last week, there was a guy from my school who planned an attack but ended up killing himself instead. Cops found a bunch of bullets and bombs in his apartment.. Like come on!!!)

To the lady who said that it's just a fantasy for girls to think a prince will sweep them off their feet, well screw her!! Flynn Rider will come for me one day, I feel it in my soul!!

Seriously though, it's ok to not 'understand' the concept of Disney, but to just down right hate it.. I don't get it.

I guess what interested me here is the psychology of it. What happens to a person, especially one that visited as a child that makes them turn their back on the magic with so much venom. I've seen parents for instance that yell at and are nasty to their kids constantly in the park. Perhaps the memory of that (conscious or subconscious) causes a lifetime dislike? What other factors might cause such an attitude?

People should know by now...tell a child no will mean yes sometime in the future LOL Besides - what makes them think they can shield them from Disney's "corporate aggressiveness" (really?) - it's all over the place...stores, books, toys, TV..so they can try and shield but those big fat NO's will get them nothing but resentment further down the line - IMHO.

I mean look at the source and concept behind the article. disneyworld is the most popular tourist attraction in the world. did anyone really expect CNN to run with an editorial that read, "surprise many people like the most popular tourist spot on earth, hence it's popularity"? enjoying disneyworld tends to be the norm. the norm is never news by its very definition.

I can see people not wanting to go to theme parks. I know people like that. I'm related to some of them, lol. And there is nothing wrong with them - theme parks just aren't their thing.

A giant hatred of theme parks? I don't get that.

But we need all kinds of fruits to make the salad. :)

Okay I have a few thoughts on this article.

For the people who say it''s "too commercial" - better go camping in the deep woods because EVERYTHING is commercialized trying to get your money. Been to a baseball game or a NASCAR race? How about to tourist spots like Panama City beach, NYC or Ocean City, NJ? The same. You can't complain about one and not the other IMO.

The woman who doesn't want her daughter idolizing princesses who are saved by the prince? Apparently has not seen "Mulan" (she saves all of China), "The Princess and the Frog" (Tiana saves herself and the prince and realizes her lifelong dream of owning her own restaurant) and "Brave" (Merida saves her mother and changes her own destiny). None of these characters are blonde, blue eyed heroines. Apparently her daughters will never see any magazine covers either. Yeah, good luck lady. Unless you girls are homeschooled. And I'm sure they LOVE feeling left out of what their friends like, see or do.

And for the lady who is a Disney "purist" - get over yourself! WDW isn't Walt Disney? Who is she kidding? It's all him, ESPECIALLY Epcot!

I'm sure each person interviewed for this article who are against Disney are hypocrytes in some way or another, I have no doubt about that.

Quoting from the article:
To those travelers, Disney is merely a commercial machine built to sell tickets, overpriced toys and a stereotype of girls as princesses.
Is there anyone who seriously doesn't think WDW is overpriced? Just since the introduction of Magic Your Way tickets in 2005, ticket priced have increased somewhere in the range of 50%. Calling it a "commercial machine built to sell tickets" seems fair to me.

Whoa Rocket. Some of the biggest Disney fans are home schoolers. And, our kids are not left out of anything. We have huge groups, and we do and see everything public school kids do and see. We now have sports teams that play other regional and national teams just like the public schools have. We take part in most everything the public school children do, plus more, and all of my daughter's closest friends are public school kids. All home schoolers aren't schooled at home for religious or political reasons. Of course, we do have those types within our numbers, but they're not the majority anymore. We get to travel and see the world and meet all kinds of people. We have the most rounded children you will find. Our kids usually score higher on all college entrance tests. Many of us, me included, use secular books to educate our children. 95% of our local group goes to college and excels. How many public schools can say that? I will admit that I'm the only liberal within my close friends, but that includes all my non-homeschooling friends. They love me anyway :).

Whatever - I love WDW, my family loves WDW... Good enough for me. I have great memories there stretching into MY childhood when my parents brought me there (and what started it all). A "tradition" I will pass onto my kids.

As for commercialization... Everything is these days. At least Disney makes it look good.

The thing with Disney is that it's safe, wholesome, entertaining and even educational. It's a good family brand where you can go and enjoy yourself no matter what you do. WDW is what you make of it; there are countless options.
