Closing of Disney Stores

Well it's started. They are closing the Disney store in Brooklyn, NY; they already closed one small store in Manhattan; and they are thinking of closing their flagship store on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. There goes my stock:brick:

That sounds like good news. Our local store in the Tri-County Mall is showing no signs of closing. We hope to buy a few items there prior to our trip.

What part of Disney owned it before? If WDW owns it now, will they have what they sell at WDW in Fla?

They closed my local Disney Store a few months ago for a remodel. It opened shortly before Christmas. Perhaps this why these other stores have closed, maybe it's just a remodel.

The 5th Ave. store resembles WOD in scope and scale. I don't think it would take much to rebrand it as a WOD.

I remember when the Disney Store was my reason to be excited over the mall.

Eventually, poor and cheap merchandise overtook the store to give it a less-heart, "plastic" feel.

It got pretty gross. Too bad they're being shut down instead of remodeled and done right.

I spoke to a friend of mine who works for ABC. The Disney store in her building (which is owned by Disney) closed for good. They took everything in the store and destroyed it. Not just the interior features like Disney characters, but also toys that were not sold prior to closing. They put paint over everything so no one could go dumpster diving. All these toys could have been donated to those less fortunate, but Disney thought otherwise. What a waste:mad:

WOW!

That's absolutely terrible!

I remember when I used to go to the mall exclusively for the Disney Store too... Not anymore though. As Grizz said, now they just have a plastic feel. Pity. :(

The gals in my local Disney Store are VERY concerned. They're hoping their store will become one of the World of Disney stores.

One thing that they were totally ticked off about this morning when I was there was that they can no longer get into the parks for free. Apparently, they are no longer considered cast members. They claim ESPN and ABC employees still have that benefit but NOT Disney Store employees.

They closed the store in Santa Barbara (which I'm closest to) almost a year ago.:( I used to love going there! Now the nearest store is 80 miles away......sad.:(

Any idea when they will reopen? I'm due to go to NYC for a conference and was hoping to go to the store.

The Disney Stores have been for sale for the last 18 months or so. Maybe they sold the chain and the stores the Company is keeping is being changed to World of Disney.

We are still considered cast members and we can still get our discounts in the parks (50% off rooms, 35% (for me ) off merchandise and 20% off food) just not free entrance to the parks but that was only a perk for the last three years. ESPN and ABC can not enter the park for free either. We all get four free passes a year and reduced park tickets. Management still gets their silver passes for free entry. :brick:

So what is this whole"World of Disney" thing. They're going to close all the Disney Store's and keep some open as WOD? The 5th avenue store will be just like the one at Downtown Disney? Does this mean they'll be selling the same stuff at the current Disney store (plastic junk) or will they be selling stuff themed to the theme parks like at WOD?

I'll take a walk over there and let you know by tomorrow. It is only up the block from me.

Took a look at the Disney on 5th. They are still open and are selling stuff for Valentines. So far so good. Check out my thread on the news this morning about Comcast buying Disney. Could happen.:hammer:
