This is Wedge at approx 4 months. He is darker and larger now. Also his eye color has changed a little. More of the center blue.

I've really got to get over to the in-laws to use their scanner to get some new pictures.

We are currently trying to figure out what to do. We have a stray cat that hangs around our house (so of course my wife started feeding it). She has become very friendly and usually come when my wife calls her. We think she is living in our shed. We are pretty sure she is pregnant. The problem is we have two dogs and they don't seem real interested in the idea of a cat being around.

We want to take her to the vet to get her shots and a checkup (assuming she will let us). We would love to bring her into our house but the dogs look like they will present a problem. Anyone have any ideas on how to get the three of them to get along?

Hi Mr Toad!

A lot of people have success by setting a room aside for the new animal, and letting the new and old pets get to know each other by smell (under the door).

The Best Friends network probably has someone in your area (part of the No More Homeless Pets campaign) who may be able to help you. The main website is www.bestfriends.org and there is a forum there with people who know about these things. You might find some good ideas there.

Most people I know with cats and dogs don't have any problems. If you are worried for the cat's safety, you can probably relax. Assuming the cat is not declawed (and as she is not a kitten anymore, declawing her now would be very traumatic -- TRIM THOSE NAILS THOUGH!!!-- and don't worry, my cats are not declawed and the only things they scratch are their scratching posts) she will be able to hold her own against your dogs  I am not suggesting a fight  Most cats will swat an aggressive dog on the nose and earn respect rather quickly without any bloodshed.

I bet the 3 of them will be best friends in no time :)

Thanks Erika, I will look into the The Best Friends network. As for who I am concerned about it is all of them. I'm afraid the dogs might hurt her as they are 55 and 65 pounds and while very friendly with people they are not always receptive to other animals though I think they really just need more exposure. I am also concerned about the dogs get hurt from the claws. Our lab is more of a clown than a fighter - her idea of defense is rolling on her back and barking  .

I know a number of people that have cats and dogs with no problems so we might have to give it a try. We have started letting the dogs see her when they are outside and on their leashes.

The big problem is the kittens. I will have a real hard time giving them away but there is no way I can have a whole litter of them as pets (OK, I could but I shouldn't).

For now I may have to build her some sort of shelter to live in so she has a safe place to have her kittens.

Bacl home... we had two cats... and then we got a puppy... the cats would beat up on the puppy, till he got bigger than them... LOL... so then they started to train him to be a cat... It was always weird having a dog acting like a cat! lol

Your cats are ALL just gorgeous, everybody! We currently have three, all rescued from shelters (as all of our cats have been), and they get along with our rescued-from-a-shelter dog just fine. (Occasional differences of opinion about space, but that's no different from the humans around here, heh heh heh.)

Our oldest cat, Emily, has the gift of knowing when and where she is needed. When she was a WILD kitten, fresh from the shelter (and an abusive family right before that), she took one look at my husband's terminally-ill mom, curled up in her lap, and slept for hours. Mind you, she refused to come near any of the rest of us - but whenever my mother-in-law visited, she was right there. She would even ride in the car to go visit her toward the end. It was amazing. When my mother-in-law passed away, Emily seemed to know. After that, she calmed down and began to trust the rest of us.

The family jokes (nervously) that if Emily starts hanging around, it's time for a check-up, but my husband has never forgotten Emily's gift to his mom.
