Christmas Decorations?

When do the Christmas decorations go up around WDW? I think I remember it was the week before Thanksgiving....does that sound right?

It all has to be complete by the day after Thanksigiving, so they do start ASAP. Osbourne Spectacle of Light usually begins in June/July, meaning MGM sorta begins it. AK spent a good month adding christmas trees to their various areas last year.

MK waits until MNSSHP is over to start, and Epcot has to finish Food/Wine. Epcot typically seems to be the last one done because of it - last year their tree was barely up on time and then adjuste dseveral times because it was crooked.

They may be changing this.

Last year the Christmas events at DAK and MGM started a week or two prior to Thanksgiving.

In talking with a manager at Epcot, they informed me that marketing wanted to start the Epcot Christmas festivities the day after Food and Wine finished (11/14ish) but the decision was made too late.

very early November

Last year, the AK tree was up/complete the first weekend of November (5th-6th) and we saw work on the gingerbread house going on in Boma @ AKL. (I can't recall if the tree was up in AKL lobby - I'll need to check my photos). We also saw the framework for the lights/arches for the stretch leading towards World Showcase Lagoon at EPCOT, but work there was limited because the Food & Wine Festival was still going.

At the resorts they start putting them up in early to mid-November. Most of the decorations for the parks go up around Thanksgiving.

Nothing gets "turned on" until after Thanksgiving.

Thats not exactly true anymore. Like Speck pointed out. Last year all of MGM and Animal Kingdoms Christmas decorations and events were up and running around mid-November. I think it was the 14th to be exact. This included both holiday themed parades, the Spectacle of Lights and all the decorations.

The goal, from my understanding, is to lengthen the christmas festivities.

Now, F&W dates are not out yet, and if anyone remembers, the festival has only been going into November since 2 years ago, when it was extended. With September being a slower month, I would see F&W starting earlier, and ending around Halloween (like it used to) and Christmas starting a week or two later.

Also, don't forget about "The Nightmare Before Christmas" halloween overlay that is supposed to go over SOL at MGM.

We have been there the last full week before thanksgiving. Everyday when we got up there were more decorations. we have also been there for Thanksgiving and it sure seemed that EVERYTHING was decorated by then

Christmas decorations begin to go up between Halloween and Thanksgiving, and are complete by the day after Thanksgiving. At the MK, the garland and wreaths are removed from Main Street for the Christmas parade filming (this is usually the first weekend in December), and are replaced by the next Monday or Tuesday. Epcot decorations are done in time for the Candlelight Processional, the Studios are finalized with the Osborne lights, and AK basically just has a big tree.

Is it hard to get tickets to the Magic Kindom celebration for Christmas?

Many of the festivities are free. The parks are generally uncrowded the week after Thanksgiving and the first two weeks of December. Two hard ticket items are MVMCP on select nights in the MK, and Candlelight Processional dinner packages.

You can still see the Candlelight Processional without paying.

this time period seems to get more crowded each year....last year the weekends in early December were much like that during the summer.....without the heat/humidity
