True...people look to movies and TV for different reasons. Some demand to see "themselves" in movies. They want to feel like "they" are on the screen or in the story. Some need movies to "validate" them. Me?...I dont uses movies or stories for that purpose. I feel no need to be included or represented or affirmed. I dont feel a need to see "me" anywhere in life and that desire is not inside of me....so I dont get it.

There is only one "me" on planet Earth...and nobody represents "me" anyway.
White male, I'm guessing?

You can’t put a number on “were people inspired?” or “did they see themselves in this film?” or “this $200M production was a deeply personal story about my unique experiences.”

Well, to be honest, when I was young I loved that Snow White had black hair like me. Or if a Barbie would come out with dark hair. Even when I was around 17 I got a kick out of the fact that Belle - with the brunette hair - was supposed to be considered the prettiest princess of all.
I like to see movies about growing up with a large, ethnic extended family. I'm Italian but my Big Fat Greek Wedding didn't just speak to me, it sang! 😄

So I can see why people say that.

I’m a Hispanic male and I don’t need to see hispanics on screen to enjoy a movie.

But everyone’s world and their outlook is different.

I didn’t want another little mermaid remake. I would have preferred a new original IP or film, or something tangentially related. Like in the world “of”.

But I can’t not look away from the potential or existing joy, whether overt or subconsciously, that young African American girls will have seeing Ariel reflect how they look and see this world. That’s wonderful. You can’t take that away from them. You can’t take that away from the actress wanting to inspire that.

Now does a 45 year old adult need someone to look like them or be from the same background in a Disney film (read: not an art film or societal commentary)for them to really “enjoy” a film? I don’t personally think so. YMMV

For grown adults it shouldn’t, I agree for kids it’s important to see theme selves in a positive manner in this world

It may not matter for grown adults, but it may make someone want to see a movie more.

Everyone likes to see a movie that represents them or they identify with one way or another. Even as adults.

Of course the answer matters when it comes to representation. Thanks for answering.
Ahhh...so you are the type that is into stereotyping people? Gotcha...thanks for revealing that. That's a bad human habbit.

You dont know me. I grew up in Asia. I was an extreme minority there. Do you know what I did? I made friends with all the Asians aound me. I learned how to live as a minority for 8 years. You know what?...I never CARED that I was the only kid around that "looked" like me. I learned to be 100% OK with all the people that were "different" than me.

I was not living in a "safe space". I was not "represented" at all...and I still never cared.

But....you continue pusing your stereotypes.

You all switched from ‘i want to see myself in this movie’ in discussion of seeing a film… to switching about representation across all films as s whole.

Stop with the huge leaps. Wanting to see prople like you in stories is not exclusive to what kinds of films you would consider seeing period.

'You all'? I don't think so. I replied to a white male who said representation doesn't matter to him. Of course it doesn't, he seems people who look just like him literally everywhere.

Anyway, I'm off for 5pm Happy Hour at the club. Enjoy your Friday evening.
