Trip Report Cheers to 10 Years! (ABD Utah and Arizona)

Hi everyone,

My husband and I left one week ago for our first Adventures by Disney trip and I thought it was worth my first trip report as well!

Who? My husband Mike and I (and everyone else on the adventure)

When? July 10-17, 2019

Where? Arizona and Utah

Why? We've been married for 10 years this year. Yeehaw!

Day 1:
Rise and shine, it's 4:00am!
Due to the mid week start, we decided not to fly out a day early, but instead to catch an early morning flight, to make sure we had plenty of time before our departure. Our flight (along with several others) did get delayed.

As we approached the baggage claim, we noticed someone holding the Adventures by Disney sign Paddle of Power.* She asked if we were Mike and Elizabeth, escorted us to baggage claim and then showed us where we would be leaving with the rest of the group. We had some extra time and were able leave our bags for them to magically show up in our hotel room later. While we only checked two bags, we were given extra luggage tags in case we wanted to check more later. We officially were allowed two luggage tags per person, for anyone wondering. For this itinerary, one carry on and one checked sized luggage per person is requested.

After grabbing a bite to eat, the time came to meet up with the group. After meeting our Adventure guides, we were lead to the bus. One of the many wonderful things about ABD is that the guides are constantly taking pictures, so I now have this picture of me (accidentally blocking Mike) getting onto the bus.

Our Adventure guides were Doug and Diana by the way. As we started the drive towards our resort, they told us about how the scenery was going to change several times over the course of our trip. They mentioned the Saguaro Cactus, and may I just say, learning about a plant has never been so much fun! They pulled over to the side of the road for us to get pictures because they are memorably large. We listened to a song and even got to try cactus candy. It was a hit! While I've had it before, many of us, including my husband hadn't and loved it. Only a picture of the cactus here, because the wind was not being my friend...

We also stopped at Montezuma's Castle. We sat under a covered area and learned about how inaccurately it was named, along with other interesting facts. A few stragglers stopped to listen in. I probably would have too!

Most of us had been arrived early in the morning and were pretty tired by the time we arrived to Enchantment Resort. Doug told us that while Enchantment Resort was the fanciest, (with the best internet and cell service) Red Cliff's Lodge was often the favorite. This was helpful and intriguing to know.

We had a private check in area, and were then driven to our rooms by “Golf Cart ninjas.” Enchantment Resort is pretty big, so it was nice to have a fast and fun transportation service. (After we got our bearings, I would say we used the golf cart ninjas vs walking about 50/50) Our bags, along with an additional welcome gift, were waiting in our room. The room was playing relaxing music that we enjoyed so much, we also listened to in the mornings while we were getting ready. I immediately gushed over the shower and bath tub, and made a mental note that I would get a relaxing bath in at some point!

When we arrived for the “mixer” part before dinner, we came to a table filled with name lanyards, and were asked to pick someone else’s up to meet. We enjoyed chips, queso, and beer or wine during this time. My husband went for the chips and queso. I went for the wine. We all found the correct names and met our new adventuring friends.
392817

There was a Mike and Michael. A small bit of confusion ensued until they found each other lol
392818

Dinner was served buffet style after a welcome from our Adventure Guides. Wine and beer were also serve yourself, which apparently isn’t always the case. No one questioned it. Everyone enjoyed themselves. Everything was so delicious, we forgot to get a picture until dessert. The s’mores bite was fun and tasty, but I was too full for my other treats. I kept the cookie sandwich for a later snack, and found out from others the pink cupcake was actually carrot cake. This feels a little like false advertising to me, but I heard it was tasty!
392829

We were welcomed towards the end of our dinner with Native American flute music performed by Eldred. It was really lovely and I was able to go ask questions after and learned about how each item he brought with him was made. This was a bow from his grandfather.

When we got back to our room, I took my relaxing bath, and we fell into a deep sleep ready to wake up to adventure!

*The Paddle of Power is the name for the adorable sign our adventure guides held that got us into exclusive experiences and ensured we didn't wait for anything. We could also get pictures with it, because fun! It will show up future posts.

Day 5, Part 1

Good morning! This was our earliest morning. We tried to get to breakfast at about 6:45am. While breakfast was tasty, they seem to be a bit overwhelmed by larger groups. For this breakfast, we ate with some of our fellow travelers who arrived to breakfast at a similar time. It was such a fun group, and it's really neat to make new friends on this adventure! When the server arrived to our table, she informed us that service was going to be a bit slower since they have a big Disney group that just all showed up at once. We let her know that we were also part of the Disney group. It was slightly awkward. It was also curious because we are far from the only group trip that goes to the Grand Canyon. It's okay, breakfast was still tasty and included a view.

After breakfast we hopped on our bus and made our way to Monument Valley. We were held up by this crew of miscreants who dared to toss bandanas at us and get us wet with tiny squirt guns!

Again, we all laughed and as the bus took off to Monument Valley, Doug and Diana told us that we would need our Bandanas later since our excursion comes with plenty of dust.
I rested a bit due to the early morning. Shortly after waking up, the theme song to Jurassic Park started playing as Diana started coming down the bus with little dinosaur toys. We were confused and intrigued. We were apparently going to be stopping off the side of the road to see some actual dinosaur tracks. We were told some of the information we would get was accurate, and some wasn't. It was pretty cool to see, and it is never something we would have stopped for without ABD.

We had lunch as soon as we got to Gouldings Lodge and then had a bit of time to shop before our journey into the Valley. We put on our bandanas and went on our way.
395682

Monument Valley is located on Navajo* Tribal Land. We took in some of the famous views...
395688

This one looked like a mammoth skull to us.
395689

Left and right mittens in the middle
395690

Three sisters (The picture doesn't do it justice. It really looks like three nuns gathered to pray)
395691

We also stopped to get pictures near this hole in the rock.
395692

*All three of our Native American local experts mentioned that they don't refer to themselves as "Navajo" since they don't know where it originated. They call themselves Dine' pronounced Di Nay.

Day 5, Part 2

We got to learn about rug weaving traditions passed down from generation to generation. I was impressed by how resourceful all the materials and dyes were. This is done in a Hopi.
395714

395715

They were surprisingly cool inside, until our group filled it with our collective body heat.

We stopped for some more awesome pictures, which included one of my favorites from the trip!
395716

Several others paid to get a picture of a horse.
395717

I got some jewelry while we were on this excursion that holds some fantastic memories.

When we got back to Goulding's Lodge, our rooms were ready with some snacks to tide us over until dinner.
Dinner was Navajo tacos and we were all excited!
The area we arrived to was picturesque and after being given a tutorial on how to make fry bread, we were allowed to make our own and eat it with honey! Fry bread tastes similar to a Sopapilla. It is really tasty.
395721

395723

The tacos (missing a picture, I ate it too quickly sorry!) were fry bread, chili, cheese, lettuce and tomato. Most ate theirs with a fork.
After dinner, we had another local expert experience where we learned more about Native American culture along with participating in a dance around a campfire.

Day 5, Part 3

I'm still here, and if you are still following along, thanks!! We turned a last minute work conference in Vegas to into a mini getaway, so my days got away from me a bit!

Now for a little post about Goulding's Lodge. It is a former trading post and museum. Several classic westerns were filmed there. Here you can see John Wayne's cabin:

And a JW fan:

We were in mini houses with a kitchenette. This would have been fantastic with kiddos. Instead, we just had an extra bed and extra room. No complaints here! Here's the living room area (Mike didn't want to move for the picture)
397110

Here's the view from the living room bed. There's a small table to the right, and the restroom is to the left.

Here's the extra bedroom:

There is also a museum that we skipped. I feel like we had a good reason at the time, but can't remember it now.

The location and history of this hotel is definitely what made it special. Getting picked up directly from the hotel and being as close to the Reservation as possible was really neat!

Day 6

We decided to do the Sunrise walk in the morning. We missed the one in Sedona and had heard rave reviews from those who chose to attend it. This was was pretty, but having just done sunset at the Grand Canyon, was a little less whelming.
397302

397303

Our adventure guides snuck this shot of us too!
397304

This morning's breakfast was a buffet exclusively for our group and quite good.

After breakfast, we set off for last hotel. As we left Monument Valley, Doug and Diana started telling us that one of their shared hobbies is film making. They announced that we were all going to make a short film together and they needed a volunteer to be the star. A fellow Adventurer, Brian's hand shot up in the air. He was officially our star and was escorted off the bus first to get his costume!
It turns out, we pulled over at Gump Hill. We recreated the scene in Forest Gump where he stops running. I was laughing so much. We got some fun pictures.
397305

Brian and Autumn have been married for 10 years this year too. They got this cute shot that I hope goes in a frame somewhere in their home!

397306

When we arrived to Red Cliff's Lodge to a private reception where we checked in, made dinner reservations, and then went to lunch. Lunch was grilled burgers and fries served with sides in outdoor covered seating near the water.

We were really excited for the River rafting excursion and it was an absolute blast!

397308

Mike "riding the bull," which means trying to stay standing up while the boat rows in circles trying to get the person to fall in. Mike didn't fall in, but he had a blast doing flips off the front of the boat!
397309

We got one of our crew to fall!
397310

One of our crew even got to be in charge for a bit. SO fun!
397311

Overall, the water was wonderfully cool to swim in under the hot sun, the rapids were the perfect mix of fast but not scary, and our group had an amazing time. My one regret is not staying an extra day here to do more rafting. It was that much fun!

The rest of the day was on our own. We could do horseback riding, UTV driving, wine tasting, or check out the museum/ swim at the pool during the afternoon. We chose nap/getting a little work done. I heard from those that attended the wine tasting is only a dollar!

We had dinner with some of our Adventurer friends out on the deck overlooking the water. It was a lovely end to the day.
