Trip Report Cheers to 10 Years! (ABD Utah and Arizona)

Hi everyone,

My husband and I left one week ago for our first Adventures by Disney trip and I thought it was worth my first trip report as well!

Who? My husband Mike and I (and everyone else on the adventure)

When? July 10-17, 2019

Where? Arizona and Utah

Why? We've been married for 10 years this year. Yeehaw!

Day 1:
Rise and shine, it's 4:00am!
Due to the mid week start, we decided not to fly out a day early, but instead to catch an early morning flight, to make sure we had plenty of time before our departure. Our flight (along with several others) did get delayed.

As we approached the baggage claim, we noticed someone holding the Adventures by Disney sign Paddle of Power.* She asked if we were Mike and Elizabeth, escorted us to baggage claim and then showed us where we would be leaving with the rest of the group. We had some extra time and were able leave our bags for them to magically show up in our hotel room later. While we only checked two bags, we were given extra luggage tags in case we wanted to check more later. We officially were allowed two luggage tags per person, for anyone wondering. For this itinerary, one carry on and one checked sized luggage per person is requested.

After grabbing a bite to eat, the time came to meet up with the group. After meeting our Adventure guides, we were lead to the bus. One of the many wonderful things about ABD is that the guides are constantly taking pictures, so I now have this picture of me (accidentally blocking Mike) getting onto the bus.

Our Adventure guides were Doug and Diana by the way. As we started the drive towards our resort, they told us about how the scenery was going to change several times over the course of our trip. They mentioned the Saguaro Cactus, and may I just say, learning about a plant has never been so much fun! They pulled over to the side of the road for us to get pictures because they are memorably large. We listened to a song and even got to try cactus candy. It was a hit! While I've had it before, many of us, including my husband hadn't and loved it. Only a picture of the cactus here, because the wind was not being my friend...
392809

We also stopped at Montezuma's Castle. We sat under a covered area and learned about how inaccurately it was named, along with other interesting facts. A few stragglers stopped to listen in. I probably would have too!

Most of us had been arrived early in the morning and were pretty tired by the time we arrived to Enchantment Resort. Doug told us that while Enchantment Resort was the fanciest, (with the best internet and cell service) Red Cliff's Lodge was often the favorite. This was helpful and intriguing to know.

We had a private check in area, and were then driven to our rooms by “Golf Cart ninjas.” Enchantment Resort is pretty big, so it was nice to have a fast and fun transportation service. (After we got our bearings, I would say we used the golf cart ninjas vs walking about 50/50) Our bags, along with an additional welcome gift, were waiting in our room. The room was playing relaxing music that we enjoyed so much, we also listened to in the mornings while we were getting ready. I immediately gushed over the shower and bath tub, and made a mental note that I would get a relaxing bath in at some point!
392826

When we arrived for the “mixer” part before dinner, we came to a table filled with name lanyards, and were asked to pick someone else’s up to meet. We enjoyed chips, queso, and beer or wine during this time. My husband went for the chips and queso. I went for the wine. We all found the correct names and met our new adventuring friends.
392817

There was a Mike and Michael. A small bit of confusion ensued until they found each other lol
392818

Dinner was served buffet style after a welcome from our Adventure Guides. Wine and beer were also serve yourself, which apparently isn’t always the case. No one questioned it. Everyone enjoyed themselves. Everything was so delicious, we forgot to get a picture until dessert. The s’mores bite was fun and tasty, but I was too full for my other treats. I kept the cookie sandwich for a later snack, and found out from others the pink cupcake was actually carrot cake. This feels a little like false advertising to me, but I heard it was tasty!
392829

We were welcomed towards the end of our dinner with Native American flute music performed by Eldred. It was really lovely and I was able to go ask questions after and learned about how each item he brought with him was made. This was a bow from his grandfather.
392820

When we got back to our room, I took my relaxing bath, and we fell into a deep sleep ready to wake up to adventure!

*The Paddle of Power is the name for the adorable sign our adventure guides held that got us into exclusive experiences and ensured we didn't wait for anything. We could also get pictures with it, because fun! It will show up future posts.

Day 2, Part 1
(Sorry for the late post. Today got away from me)

Y’all* the food is unreasonably delicious at Enchantment Resort, but before I can get to that, I have to gush about this cute thing that happens every morning. They bring fresh OJ and the morning paper to your door. This small, thoughtful gesture paired with the view made the mornings in Sedona extra special.
393174

Back to food… Breakfast was at Che Ah Chi which included lovely views and reeeeaaally good, fresh food. Our server said “You’re with the Disney group, so order as much as you want.” I got Iced coffee, the fruit platter, and eggs benedict. My husband ordered some big platter that included pancakes. The bananas on the fruit platter were bruleed
393176

After breakfast, we met with our group to go on our first official excursion! It was a Pink Jeep Tour to Diamonback Gulch. The Pink Jeeps picked us up at our resort, and then we bumped along to some stunning views. A very fun thing about his area, is that it's highly speculated as the inspiration for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, so much so, that Capital Butte is actually referred to as Big Thunder by the locals.
(Not pictured, a hula hoop and yoga competition while we waited for the jeeps to arrive)
393177

About to catch a ride with my ABD backpack

393178

All of our Jeeps at Diamondback Gulch

393180

The scenery was just as memorable as the ride!

393181

Which was is our resort?

The Pink Jeeps dropped us off at Soundbites Grill in town. It's usually only open for dinner, so we were the only customers. We had chosen our meal the day before. I didn't get a picture of the food. It was good, but nothing to write home about. The environment was fun in addition to a fantastic view too! Alcoholic drinks were not included with this meal, but a few people got prickly pear margaritas, which they said were excessively sweet.
393183

After Lunch, we could choose to bop around the main part of town, the arts district, or to go directly back to the resort. We chose to look around the downtown Sedona. We went with several others in our group who got an Aura reading, but we decided it wasn't for us. We got some cool candles from the Sedona Candle Magic. It was fun watching them being created. We chose one that looked western to remind us of the trip, and one that gave me some serious snow white vibes.
393187

The rest of the day was on our own. I'm really glad we had time to experience Enchantment Resort. I'm dying to go back and book a Spa package. I'm hoping to put together a girls long weekend there sometime in the next year...

*Excuse me, I think my native Texan is showing

Day 2, Part 2

After spending some time in our room freshening up and getting a bit of work done we went to check out the pools.
There are three. One main pool and 2 Spa pools. Doug told us that they play whale sounds in the indoor pool and I had to check for myself.
We stopped my the main pool, which is open 24/7 by the way, but decided to go to the Spa pool instead.

393396

Any direction I looked, it was beautiful. I could float here all day!

The lighting was too dark for a picture of the indoor pool so here's one of Mike trying to read.
393397

While I sadly didn't hear any creature sounds in the indoor pool, there was pretty, relaxing music playing in both spa pools.

I also enjoyed the Sauna rooms and grabbed a cup of tea before heading back to the room to get ready for dinner.

We ate at Tii Gavo for dinner. The service was slow, but the food was delicious. Would 100% wait again for our light meal. We ordered a precious tiny beer flight to share, Mike got a burger, and I got the elote appetizer for a meal. Neither of us wanted to share.
393400

393401

They were out of the brown ale, so we got to pick our favorite out of the five beers we tried.

We crashed after dinner, excited for the next day's adventures!

Day 3, Part 1

Che Ah Chi for breakfast again. Mike got a waffle, I went to the buffet in addition to getting a smoothie to go.
393414

I'd miss this view, but since we were headed to the Grand Canyon, I figured we were upgrading.
393415

Before we get to the Grand Canyon, we are stopping in Bearizona. Everyone is intrigued to say the least.

Before we got to Bearizona, we stopped for a pit stop, and to take in the new views since the scenery changed again.
393418

393424

As we were about to pull up, Doug and Diana put on Bear hats and did a little dance to a song. We all giggled. We were then told our guides who would be giving us a private tour, love bear hugs. It took a little longer than usual to get off the bus due to everyone stopping to give them hugs. It was such fun!
393421

Guess what!? It's your first glimpse of the Paddle of Power!

Our first stop in Bearizona was with some birds of prey. We got to learn about how each animal gets to Bearizona and a bit about the two birds we were meeting. This was again, exclusive for our group.

Before getting on a converted school bus, we were given food to feed the bison later. Our group was the only one on the bus.

393616

Most of the animals were awake (including another wolf), but I thought this little napper was adorable.
393621

Mike feeding the bison (The first bison we saw were mostly on the right side. Someone tried to throw their food from the left side, and didn't quite make it through the window. This made us all laugh and then turned into a game. Most others missed as well lol)

393631

There were several other animals not pictured above that we got to see as well. The tour guide, Julia, did a fantastic job telling us about the different animals. They all had interesting stories that we would have missed had we been in our own vehicle. There were love triangles and some fantastic origin stories that we got to hear.

After the tour, they had some special animals for us to meet and greet (and touch and watch run around) in addition to us getting to feed the otters. The otter section was closed off for us and we were given the option to take a dead little fish and toss it to the otters. It was so much fun watching the little guys. We were also given hand sanitizer if we liked.

Yep, that's a skunk!
393634

I've seen quite a few armadillos in my day (being raised in TX) but this was my first Albino Armadillo!

After otters and meet and greets, we got to have our very own jaguar show. The guides did a great job pulling our leg to make us think we were actually going to open the cage for the jaguars. We all laughed in relief when it was still caged. I mean, it is Disney after all! This viewing was unlike anything I'd ever seen before. They did tricks and fed him raw meat when he obeyed. Again, this was only for our group, and the size of our group was almost too much for the viewing area, but it was still epic!

After the jaguar feeding, we had a private buffet lunch before getting back on the bus to make our way to the Grand Canyon!

Day 3, Part 4

With full bellies, and new souvenirs in tow, we said our goodbyes to Bearizona!
393651

Now off to the Grand Canyon!
Wait... did you think we were headed straight there? We did, but we had one more surprise stop today in Williams, AZ!!!
For those not familiar, Williams is known as "The gateway to the Grand Canyon," and is rumored to be the town that Radiator Springs is based off of. It's on Route 66 and has so much charm. Doug and Diana recommended the best shops and stops around town. We had about an hour there. We did a bit of shopping and looking around while others hopped on the sitting zipline, or grabbed some beer and wine.

With my Route Beer next to the biggest Route 66 sign! Yes to the punny cheesiness!!
393652

So much charm here
393653

Next stop, the Grand Canyon!
As we arrived, they gave us wine to cheers our arrival. So cute!
393657

When we pulled up, it was raining. About 2 minutes later, the rain cleared up. Thanks Disney 😂

While we waiting for those who needed to use the restroom, Doug played a game with the group. We're all stumped here.
393658

When it was time for us to walk to the southern rim, they asked us all to look down while holding onto the person in front of us. Then the had us stop, and close our eyes while they led us up to the rim. We all opened our eyes at the same time. It was magical.

Day 3, Part 5

We had a bit of down time once we arrived to our hotel. We were at the Thunderbird Lodge with a view right out our window of the Grand Canyon.
394987

Dinner was at the Thunderbird Lodge in a private area where we had steak, sides, and pie. During dinner, our adventure guides asked us if we would like to make any dining reservations for the next evening, since it was on our own.

After dinner we enjoyed an additional Native American experience. This one was special due to the hoop dancer and the fact that there was a grand father and grand son as well. We got to learn how to do a friendship circle, which I really enjoyed.

Day 4

We had an early breakfast at El Tovar before heading on our tour of the Grand Canyon. We got to stop at Mary Colter's buildings and were given quarters to take in the views at the top of the tower.

Learning about the Grand Canyon with our local expert!

I don't even remember this picture being taken!
395002

We got to enjoy more views from different vantage points
395007

395010
395011

We could choose to go on a hike with our guides or to go back to the resort after our tour together. We opted to go on the hike. We got to see trees that had been hit my lightening. They smelled like syrup!
395012

The rest of the day was on our own. We enjoyed shopping and exploring, and ended the day with a sunset view of the canyon while enjoying some fudge we brought along. Several others in our group opted to eat dinner at one of the nicer restaurants. We grabbed some pizza slices before our sunset walk. We go dropped off at the Abyss area because the name sounded so epic, and then journeyed back towards Hopi Point where the bus took us back to our hotel area.

It was really nice to have so much free time since the day before had so much in it! We packed up our bags that night, ready to head over to Goulding's Lodge early the next morning.
