Characters Talking

How come some of the characters at WDW talk and some don't? I've noticed those in full costume such as mickey and goofy don't talk but those such as cinderella and snow white can. I understand about voices, but why let the princesses talk?

You want Cinderella to mime? If costumes were to talk it would ruin the experience for kids who see they don't have a real mouth!

I think this is the reason....

But, they talk during Parades and Shows and the mouth doesn't move?

I think this is a better question than it seems at first glance.

First of all, the characters' voices are more distinct. As a woman, it is easier to voice a woman. It may be hard for Cast Member X to reach up to their falsetto to voice Mickey. Plus it would be hard to hear out of a plastic mouth.

When Audio-Animatronics replace Cast Members, we may see something different. :lookaroun

Cause how many people do you know can talk like a Duck, Mouse, Dogs, etc.? But the "Look Alike" characters can actually talk like humans. I sure would not want Snow White, or Alice to not talk back to me. That's a really funny Question.... Welcome to WDWMAGIC!!!!

I would think so in Meet and Greets. I don't remember Smee being face.

Seemed like I remembered him from Long ago as a face, but I may very well be wrong. I remember him now a days like the picture you attached. Propably he always was that way and my mind is playing tricks on me.

 I do remeber this technology from the Teenage Mutant ninje Turtles show over MGM (or it was in the movie) + from meet the Muppets that moved their mouth (even Barney the stage show can move it's mouth).

:veryconfu So why can some costume caracters can't talk and move their mouth an use a synthethiser to "simulate"the caracters voice and pitch?

:hammer: But I also remember that the servos to move them are also loud so the magic won't be there.

Yea just keep it the way they are. I like that they don't talk. I mean what would the character talk about with the guest? At least for Cinderella, or any other face character, she can actually interact with the guests in there own different ways (Just like there movies)

What's silly about it?

Anyways, as far as the face characters( peter pan, snow white et al) are concerned, they are portrayed by the same gender by which the character was. For the non-face(Pluto et al) both guys/girls play these characters, so if, for example, Robin Williams was the voice of a male non-face character in a film, when the parks received the costumes for that character, the character dept would have to assign only guys to that character who could represent the "likeness" of Williams' vocal cadence. So you can see where they'd run into problems with all the characters and having to play them in the parks as male-only and female-only.
