Hi All!! I found this review while searching for Disney articles on the net and I thought it would be a good reference for people who might be thinking of making reservations for this particular character meal.

CHARACTER MEAL REVIEW - Garden Grill @ Epcot

Finding character meals is not always an easy task. Kevin reviews what may be the most accessible character meal in the resort.

Statements below are the work of their authors and not necessarily the opinion of Theme Park Insider.

From the official WDW website: Come to the party and meet Mickey and his pals, who host a family-style signature skillet for you! Family-style favorites include grilled steak, rotisserie meats and country-style catfish. This rotating restaurant overlooks scenes from the Living with the Land attraction and even features food grown in the Land greenhouse. The children's meals feature a fun interactive dessert. It's a Garden of delights!

Wow, is that ever a horrible blurb! "Party" makes the whole experience way more fun than it actually is. Mickey's "pals" consist solely of Chip and Dale. The food is all-you-can-eat, or as Disney likes to call it, "All You Care to Eat." Whatever. And don't get me started on those "scenes from the Living with the Land attraction." Just don't.

Okay, about one-third of the restaurant will actually overlook the Land pavilion, but its location prevents you from seeing any of the floorspace. But you can look up at the stuff hanging from the ceiling! Another third will have you facing a wall and the final third actually does overlook Living, but just barely. We were seated in the middle ring and could barely see anything, though a closer inspection shows that you overlook the boats more than the actual scenes. It seems to me that the whole rotating restaurant idea was shoehorned in, rather than worked into the actual layout of the Living ride.

So the rotation isn't much of a draw; how about the characters? Ehhhh. I'm not into the characters at all, but chose this restaurant so my traveling companion could relieve some of her character obsession without having to wait in lines out in the parks. I do enjoy Chip and Dale, though, but I don't think three characters are really enough. Especially in this character-starved park.

Anyhow, the characters do come around often, but because it was very slow on our visit, they were spending a lot of time at the few tables, so it took a while for them to get to us. And a while for them to leave. I don't need to see them ever again!

Okay, I wasn't thrilled with the atmosphere or the characters; what about the food? The menu, which features Bread, Country-Style Catfish, Grilled Flank Steak, Rotisserie Meats, Potatoes and Vegetables (most of which probably grown in the Land pavilion), Cornbread Stuffing and
Dessert, though I don't remember what that was specifically. We didn't much care for the Catfish or the Meats so we asked for them to bring us items from the kid's menu, which they did happily. Those consist of Macaroni and Cheese, Steak Fries and Chicken Fingers. There is also something called Worms in Dirt, which we didn't ask for.

Unfortunately that dessert is basically where the innovation ends. The "countryfied" theme doesn't lend itself to anything experimental. Then again, I haven't found a character meal that gets too fanciful with the food. Considering how many high-quality restaurants there are in Epcot, I don't fault Disney for making one of them a meat-and-potatoes kinda place.

The food is edible, for the most part, though totally unmemorable. I do recall us enjoying the kiddie food more than the adult food, which isn't a good sign. In fact, I remember the bread more than anything else.

Still, for those that prefer sit-down restaurants for at least one meal this is one of the cheaper alternatives. The Garden Grill doesn't jack up prices as badly as some, and kid prices don't change at all. Plus, this is the only park restaurant I can think of that offers characters from opening to closing, which is extremely convenient. The characters and the all-you-can-eat aspects are a good alternative, as long as diners are fairly easy to please foodwise. That said, I don't care about the characters, I'm not a huge eater and I am not easy to please, so I give the restaurant a TPI rating of 6 - Fair.

The Garden Grill also offers an ice cream social in the middle of the afternoon. If it were me, I would eat a late lunch downstairs at the food court and do the ice cream social for dessert. The restaurant also has "Rehitching Ceremony" where married couples can be "rehitched" in a silly little ceremony. Ask about it when you make a Priority Seating reservation at 407-WDW-DINE up to 90 days beforehand.

I disagree 100% with that review!
The atmosphere is very nice and when the restaurant faces that ride area, restaurant guests are able to see things that the people on the boats cannot. The characters are great (even though I’m not big on them) and they spend a good amount of time at each table (unlike other character meals). I have to say that the food was great; the catfish is the best I have ever had. Come on the reviewer went for the chicken fingers over the rotisserie chicken and we’re to take his word on the quality of food? I don’t think so.
If the pervious review makes you not want to eat there, I would hope that you would reconsider and give the Garden Grill a try, it’s well worth the price.

I really enjoyed the Garden Grill. Even though not all of the food was to my liking, I'd definately go there again (I guess I'm a sucka for revolving restaurants[especially ones that overlook rides])

Try the Ice Cream social the afternoon - it was just as great as a full meal.
We spend $35 for 4 and that's a lot cheaper than the family next to us eating a full meal. We got the same time with Mickey, Chip & Dale and Pluto as they did for a whole lot less.

I ate at the Garden Grill once with my family and my friend Sarah my senior year of high school. All I remember is, the waiter walked over, handed adult menu's (? maybe not menu's, since it's all the same menu...it's been 5 years so I don't really remember, but it was something to that effect...we'll say menu's) to my mom, my dad and I...and children's menu's to 18 year old Sarah and my 13 year old brother. Sarah was sooooo mad. That, and some really un-outstanding food is all I really rememeber.

I agree that this restaurant is not for everyone! My SIL and daughter are vegetarians...this would not be a good choice. My son, however, has never met a deep-fried food that he doesn't like, so he thought it was great. I was in the middle. It was what I expected from an all-you-can-eat, family style, country-style restaurant, and was better than most, especially because of the characters, but also because the food was fresh; I had three servings of veggies alone.

I ate with Atta and 5 of the "guys" during the meet, and it was a great place for a bunch of hungry guys on a budget. This was probably their only full meal of the day, and they took full advantage of it. :animwink:

So, if you're travelling with a bunch of meat and potatoes, big appetite type folks who want to interact with the characters, this is the place for you. If you're looking for a quiet, gourmet experience, don't bother.

We love the Garden Grill. We've only eaten there once so far (so manyplaces, trying to get to all) and we loved it!! It was the best character meal we've had. We ate their on our honeymoon trip in April 2000 (yes, we wore the Mickey Bride and Groom ears the entire trip) and the place was not crowded at all. We had Mickey, Dale, and Chip to ourselves pratically. We really enjoyed the character interaction here. They were a lot of fun, Dale tried to "steal" me away from my husband. And then our server along with Mickey and the chipmunks presented us with a cake that I think read "congratulations!" It was small, but we were so full of the delicious food. We ended up offering some of it to the kids at the next table. As far as the food, they did a great job! It was great, and they even accomodated us....i'm allergic to fish, so we got extra steak in place of the catfish.
On our last trip we tried walking up to Garden Grill and we turned away, darn PS!! We were turned away at Canada too, it was busy night in Epcot.

next trip...we are trying to hit le cellier, ohana, artist point, and chef mickeys for the first time.

I had breakfast at Garden Grill once and enjoyed it. It was fun to see my best friend forced to wear a straw hat lol :) That was a long time ago... As far as the Ice Cream Social. I've only done it once and will never do it again as I had a bad experience. They were not prepared for my mother's special dietary needs (She is diabetic) even though the Cast Member said our reservations plainly stated that she was diabetic and the chef should have been prepared for this. Then when we got our ice cream we were not impressed. The cookie things they serve with it were obviously quite stale and the portions were no fancier than what you'd get for dessert at a restaraunt, definitely not worth the time or money. I know some people go to the Social as a way to get a character meal without spending alot of money but if you're like me and go to three or four character meals a trip, you should stay away from the Ice Cream Social.

I disagree completely with the review. I have eaten at Garden Grille a few times and always have a good meal and a really good time. It has a nice relaxed atmosphere, caters very well to young ones, and the characters interact a bunch with you.

Its not the best food at WDW by far, but its well worth the price, and I always walk away with a smile on my face.

P.S. I love the Worms in Dirt. :slurp:

We really enjoy the Garden Grill. We chose that as our restaurant for the Candlelight Processional in 2002, and are considering going back again for the CP this year. I thought the food was very good, :slurp: and we all loved having the characters visit. We also must have had a much better view than the reviewer because we saw a lot more of Living With The Land than him.
