Character body shapes

I just thought about this and have never heard anyone talk about it, but as I was looking at pictures of Mickey, I noticed that he has a definite body shape in every picture.

How do I put this nicely....

My question is, does his friend have to wear a foam/__?__ body suit or do they cast by body type?

The characters have ample padding assistance. For instance, Goofy has all the padding he needs to look skinny, but with a well-fed pot-belly at the same time.

It's most definitely padding in all the right places. Could you imagine having to cast people with the same body type as Tweedle Dum? Also, when you hug the character for a photo op you can feel the difference between "real" padding under there and foam/__?__ padding. :)

Its strange to see the very old costumes from the early years of Disneyland. Mickey was just basically wearing a black body suit with red shorts, he looked emaciated!

Some of the larger characters (Brer Bear, Baloo, Beast) have sets of hoop rings to define the shape, rather than padding. Baloo is like a large billows, if I squat down, I feel the hot air go rushing out the air vents, and when I stand up, (hopefully) cooler air is drawn back in!

BTW, I can get in Goofy's clothes and look pretty good, but I can't get in the pads so I've been dissapproved of that role. So they don't want someone the right shape for the character, but some who can get into the pads so the characters all have a consistant shape!

Also, the cast member is basically chosen by "do you fit in the costume."

Each costume is one size (I think Princesses had 2 sizes).

I just finished up my cp working in character costuming. The princesses have more than 2 sizes. The princesses have to obviously have the same body type as the character (tall, short, etc) but there are multiple sizes in all of the princess & face character costumes. the only one I can think of there not being multiple sizes in is Aladdin, but thats a loose fitting costume, but all of those performers are about the same size.
