Chanting at WDW Banned?

As long as they crack down on cheerleaders as much as they do on tour groups, I'm game. But if they only target south American groups, that is messed up.

A friend of mine I was talking to a few days ago who used to work at the Grosvenor Resort @ Lake Buena Vista as a front desk manager back in 1996 said that the South American tour groups used to come in and cause damage in the rooms (break furniture, damage the walls, etc.). Based on the experiences that I had with South American tour groups in the parks, I really wouldn't doubt this type of behavior in the hotels.

I prefer hearing the carefully selected atmospheric sounds and background music over what boyband, football club, or country you and your sixty obnoxious friends feel you must support by screaming it in my ear.

Yup. There is no difference between "chanting" and yelling at the top of your lungs in a group. Neither of them are really conducive to a pleasant environment.

It may seem silly to some but honestly, these are the things that are just like - if people were respectful in the first place, we wouldn't need "rules" like this to begin with.

If they want to recreate the South American football experience whilst on holiday maybe Disney could respond with tear gas and water cannons.

It's a cultural thing. I've seen doctors and nurses and other highly educated folks from that region of the world do the same thing.

It's disrespectful by US standards (and probably taken a bit to far by teenage groups) but it's not disrespectful or obnoxious in that culture.

I get where everyone is coming from, but having experienced first hand and realizing its not an "unsupervised group of teenager" thing and it's a common occurrence across South America, I don't get nearly as bent out of shape as I once did.

Disney will only stop the chanting when it starts to effect the bottom line. The tour groups are keeping WDW solvent now. Disney is not going to kill the golden goose to appease xenophobes.

The chanting itself isn't that big of a deal to me. Sure, I'd *rather* hear the ambient sounds and music piped into each land, but a little chanting from anyone is fine as long as it's outside and passes by relatively quickly. If, however, I'm surrounded by it, outside or (especially) in a closed area such as a bus or inside queue, then it's a matter of courtesy. You can say it's a cultural thing, but if that's the case, then why is that culture so discourteous?

What I'd prefer Disney to do something about is individuals (using from the same demographic that are known for chanting) who hop railings to cut in line in front of people or who bump into each other rudely to get from one place to another. I had both of these happen in January in the queue for Buzz and the CM who saw it happen just shrugged her shoulders.

I can only assume those cultures don't consider it rude. I've stayed at hotels where they were staying in groups, and even in the pool late at night it was nothing but yelling at the top of their lungs. (And I'm Italian from New Jersey, my normal talking voice can be considered "loud," especially if I'm passionately discussing something LOL.) (add hands waving, etc. LOL.)

But my natural tendencies are tempered out of respect for other people who paid as much as I did for my room, and deserve the same peace and quiet I'd like.

This is not limited to groups of chanters. I found myself saying the other day at WDW, "Does everyone here think they are the only person here?" People just stop walking and stand there as if no one was walking behind them, hit you with strollers without apologizing, walking slower than molasses, oh you guys all know this stuff. No need to relive the drama LOL. But manners and respect go a long way.

I was stuck in the Tower Of Terror Queue and Ride with a large group of chanters...not only did they completely destroy any ambient music and storytelling in the lead up to the ride, but the pre-show was completely inaudible with the screaming chanting and clapping, then on the ride you could not hear one bit of the dialogue as they chanted and clapped through the entire experience...start to stop.
It was a horrible experience...
Luckily a very nice cast member took us aside and put us back on the ride without having to wait in line again... that helped...but you miss so much of the build up in the queue... I really wish there were some way to discourage this!@!

Side note: Labor Day night, fairly empty at the MK, I couldn't believe how many "extra" sounds I was hearing coming from the HM. Loved it. Next day, rode again, and couldn't even hear the intro before walking into the stretching room.

I'm sure the chanting is annoying while waiting in lines. But I wouldn't know personally. Because you'll never ever find me getting in line behind, or just in front, of a tour group.
They're very easy to spot and avoid.
Waiting 5-10 minutes is generally more than enough time to allow the noisy groups to "move on through".

Don't try that on New Year's Eve. It was pretty much hell everywhere around World Showcase LOL. The special version of Illuminations was awesome, though!

Well now I'm insulted us EAGLES fans are a proud people with a rich cultural haritage. Who do you think pioneered same day court hearing under the stadium?! Or drove Santa underground using in ice balls and batteries!?! Yes we have a fight song that even South American tourist wish they had thought of, but we are proud rich Ringless people... E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES!!!

I'm impressed that many fans can spell a six letter word let alone ride an escalator at the same time. I thought only four letter words were yelled by Eagles fans.

Odd... I've encountered rude Brazilian teenage tour groups plenty of times, for somehow I've escaped the chanting in Portuguese.

However, I have been one of the unfortunate victims of American teen spirit. Small World is nothing compared to being stuck with a group of 20 teenage girls on a bus from Pop to DTD screaming "Rudolph the res-nosed reindeer - REINDEER! - had a very shiny nose - LIKE A LIGHT BULB!..." On a repeating loop. "Second verse, same as the first!"

I drank TWO Kungalooshes that night. At the same time.

With what is happening in the Brazil economy I think this will resolve itself soon. WDW will be looking to other countries to bring in the groups so we may hear chanting in other languages than Portuguese. Isn't that what world showcase is all about after all? Exposing the ugly Americans to other cultures one dollar at a time?

Any individual person complaining about Brazilian groups chanting may or may not be a xenophobe, but that person's view on chanting doesn't prove it either way. If those topless body paint women from Times Square were to stroll through the Sistine Chapel like that, it would hardly be xenophobic to complain that it is inappropriate in the context. The chanting is annoying AF, no matter who does it. Feelings about other cultures are irrelevant.

Insinuations like the one you made are intentionally provocative, and it worked. Kudos, I guess.

I always heard that when Americans go to another country they should study the cultures of that country and not be an "Ugly American." That's what I always do. I try to be at least somewhat cognizant that I'm in another country. So on that note...Americans think chanting from any country, cheerleader, teens. 90 yr old grandmas to be completely annoying. Just a FYI. :D

We witnessed this first hand in July. We spent a short 5-10 minutes with a female tour group in the FP line of Mine Train. They were high fiving my kids and having fun. When they were about to board 2-3 straight trains, someone started a chant. The CM quickly put an end to it, which was impressive given he barely moved and was likely a CP. It would have been short since they were about to get on, but it was appreciated as it would have been quite abnoxious in that enclosed space.

Overall groups were generally well behaved during our nine days there. The worst we saw was an encounter between an all girls and all boys group while exiting HS. The chanting started and then the boys ripped their shirts off. It was actually pretty funny as was explaining what was going on to my 7 and 3 year old!
