All Disney All The Time

If you get a chance grab a book about the 1893 Chicago World's Fair. The Ferris Wheel was invented for the Fair, there was a Midway with exhibits from all over the world (including an entire Egyptian village featuring Little Egypt), there was intense rivalry and infighting among the architects and landscapers, there was a section called The White City that featured pavilions celebrating new technology, social change and plans for the "future". The use of electricity made a BIG impact.
Put it all together and it's got DisneyLand and WDW written all over it.
On a non-Disney note: the first known American serial killer operated during the Fair.
