it seems that disney goes to great links to convince people that the animal kingdom is not a zoo, or "nahtazu". with just the term animal in the name makes one think that it is. i know that it is so much more than just an animal park. someone who hasn't been there, may indeed assume it is and bypass it all together. i heard some folks talking about that a few weeks ago while we were there. i personally like it, but i guess to some it can be a little misleading.

I like the Animal Kingdom name but i do agree with you how most people think nothing of it but more like a zoo. I talked to a family on my last visit while in line for the Safari. I made a joke about Nahtazu and they were like "yea i dont get it" and i was like its not-a-zoo. And they were like ohhhhh...

Just give it time. Animal Kingdom is still a relatively new theme park. For anyone who has been to the park, they realize it isn't a zoo, nor is it Busch Gardens. Attractions such as KS or the Jungle Trek showcase animals like no zoo will ever be able to do.

With the addition of EE, Animal Kingdom should really begin to branch out to thrill-seekers, and make this more than the "half day park" many folks seem to think of it as. There is only so much the Marketing Team can do to convince guests this park is not a zoo.

However, an interesting note: Animal Kingdom's attendance was up 7% last year, second highest among the Disney parks (EPCOT - 9%). Though they are still the least of the four in terms of park attendance (though #5 in the country overall), they were merely a half million away from D-MGM Studios. We can only assume these numbers to go up, so perhaps the public is finally getting it after all.

I think the name is fine. I mean it isn't called Disney's zoo, its called Disney's Animal Kingdom. Which to me means it is more than a zoo, or that it is not just a park with animals. Look at Seaworld it has rides now, and they didn't change the name it is still called Seaworld.

I thought that's why they changed their logo and name(some what) and it's now called Sea World Adventure Park was in part due to the rides. :p

Agreed. It may be deceiving, with the word "Animal" in it, but, It is way more than that. They Have Rides (Dinosaur, Kali River Rapids) So, No, It is "Nahtazu"

If you are going to start a thread about changing the name, how bout giving a suggestion that you think is better?

AK would be tough to beat. It fits in with MK, and plays both off of that and with the animals.

how about discovery kingdom. that's what you do here anyway. you discover new things about everything you come in contact with. i like animal kingdom, but like what was said earlier, the term animal may be suggestive to people who are not disneyworld freaks like we all are. discovery kingdom may be lame, but it is more broad of a term than just animal.

Yeah, but I would argue that all of WDW is about that general theme of discovery, particularly Epcot and AK.

Also, the point isn't to be misleading.

Animal Kingdom is a theme park that has a theme of animals. The public shouldn't have to work hard to figure out what it's about.

I have old-old stuff from pre-opening that says "Disney's Wild Animal Kingdom" and "Disney's Wild Kingdom" so other names were considered.

I wouldn't change it just after 5-6 years. The costs alone would be hard to justify. The name seems just fine to me going along with the theme. It would be hard not to have the word Animal in it since thats the basic theme of the place.

Heh... my g/f says, "If it has animals and you have to pay an admission fee to go see them.......it's a zoo." :D

I understand the original point, but you can't get away from the fact that is full of animals, themed on animals and is actually all about animals. If you changed the name, I could see people complaining that they went to "Discovery Kingdom" and it was just all about animals.

Wouldn't that be like changing MGM's name to remove any hint to studios or movie connections?

I think that Animal Kingdom is a suitable name for the park but it doesn't do justice to everything that can be found within the park. Its just like EPCOT, Disney hasn't chosen the name to include the World Showcase features
