We have not been to WDW for just over two years, but last time we were there our cell phones did not work very well. We are with Verizon, and I am wondering if it has gotten any better?

hehehe When I was in Whispering Canyon once, one of the waiters stood next to a guy talking on his cell phone with his finger in his other ear and said in the loudest voice possible: EXCUSE ME!!! COULD EVERYONE PLEASE BE QUIET IN HEAR? THIS MAN IS TRYING TO TALK ON HIS CELL PHONE!!!. It was the funniest thing.

And I've noticed that you rarely can use your cell phones in the hotel rooms. You have to go outside on the balconies.

No problems here.

And I'm only slightly embarassed to say that since we have gone the past few years for NOJ, which usually is the same weekend as the start of the NFL season I have used my Treo' to track the Redskins scores throughout the parks. :D

Yeah I usually leave mine on vibrate or off... I always go with my wife so there is no one else i care to talk to whom would be important enough to interrupt my WDW time :)

I totally agree! :D My cellphone will probably be back in our room in the safe.

Cell phone use is a pet peave of mine, whether it's at a movie, sporting event, or those idiots that drive while using one. (While driving recently, I had a guy in the opposite lane coming towards me with his car half way into my lane, and as you guessed, he was looking at his cellphone as he held it on top of the steering wheel! AAAAAAAARGH! ) I can't wait till they outlaw cellphone use while driving. I've seen too many hits and near-misses and, on the news, people that have died because of distracted drivers.

Sorry for the rant... I'll be Disney Happy again in a few minutes.

I have Verizon service. It worked everywhere except the Soarin queue and inside the hotel room. In the Soarin queue, once you get past the first hallway, the signal dropped to no bars. It was only powerful enough to send and receive text messages. In the hotel room, it would sometimes work OK right next to the door (at both Pop and Movies), but usually I had to step outside to get a signal.
I put my phone on vibrate in the parks. With all the ambient noise, it wasn't really possible to hear the ringtone anyway.

Update Your PRL

<TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0><TBODY><TR><TD>Updating the Preferred Roaming List (PRL)</< p>
</TD></TR><!--Long Description Here--><TR><TD>Verizon Wireless is constantly advancing its roaming technology to provide you with superior roaming capabilities. By updating your PRL every few weeks, you can be sure you have access to their enhancements. As a result you may experience:
  • Longer battery life
  • Fewer dropped or blocked calls
  • Clear, crisp connections in more areas across the United States
  • Ability to connect to the digital network in more parts of the country
To update your PRL:
  1. Power on your phone within any Verizon wireless digital service area.
  2. Dial *22899 and then press SEND (this call is airtime free and may take up to 2 minutes).
  3. Once completed, a confirmation message will appear to inform you that your phone has been re-programmed with the new PRL.
  4. Press End to terminate the call.
  5. Power cycle your phone to complete the update.
I've been a Verizon Wireless customer for about 6 years and always do this when I get into the Orlando area from Atlanta. I never have any problem using my phone at any of the resorts after I do. It's a good idea to do this anytime you travel outside your regular area of use. I find most cell phone users are not familiar with the feature.

Never had a problem with my cell at WDW(except the common, can't hear it ring) and I have Verizon. My sis has sprint and also has never complained. We tried on a few occassions to use the "walkie talkies'' and they were a WASTE! We picked up everyone conversations except our family members!

We have Verizon and had no difficulties with it during our last visit this past Christmas. On the other hand, other members of our party have Cingular and were having difficulties with theirs- primarily in the rooms. We didn't have any problems with making calls from our room.

If you look outside AK, you'll see a really tall tree... as one of our CM friends said..."It's a Disney tree." That really tall tree is a poor disguise of a cell tower. And it's just out in the middle of no-where, too, which makes it an even worse disguise!
